Game 21 - Phils Adrift in a Sea of Losses

Atlanta Braves  4
Philadelphia Phillies  2

2015 Topps Update #US166
Sunday Night, April 19th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
8-13, 4th Place, 6 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies went relatively quietly against the Braves, dropping this game on a rainy and raw Sunday night in front of a national audience and limping out of town to Chicago.

What It Means:  I'm not joining the portion of the fanbase calling for Rob Thomson to be fired.  I don't think a new manager would be able to figure out why none of the team's sluggers are doing their jobs, and I never think panic is a viable strategy.  I do think changes are needed, and maybe that's a shake-up with the coaching staff, a trade, a high-profile demotion . . . something.

What Happened:  The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kyle Schwarber dropped his seventh home run of the year just over the right field wall.  Trea Turner had singled in front of him to start the game.  And that was the run output for the night.  They had chances, going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, but a big inning or a clutch hit just never showed up.  Andrew Painter went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  Tim Mayza entered the game in a critical spot and allowed both of his inherited runners from Painter to score.  In the bottom of the ninth, with two runners on, Schwarber lined out to Ronald Acuna, Jr. to end the game, in what likely would have been a game-tying double with anyone else in right field.

Featured Card:  This is the team's worst start through 21 games since the 99-loss 2015 season when they also started 8-13.  Manager Ryne Sandberg would announce he had had enough that June and he was replaced by Pete Mackanin on an interim basis.  That team fell to 8-13 on April 28, 2015 in a 11-5 loss to the Cardinals.  Starter Severino Gonzalez allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings.  This 2026 Phillies team is currently giving me 2015 vibes.

2015 Topps Bunt Phillies

Thanks to a tip and a series of e-mails from fellow collector Burnell, I was made aware of several 2015 Topps Phillies variations to be found within the Topps Bunt App.  I have no idea how this App actually works, but I do know that it seems to be very popular.  From the official description from the Topps website:
Topps BUNT is the only real-time, real world Major League Baseball digital trading card game where the cards you own and collect earn points based on how your players perform on the field each day. Download BUNT for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on the App Store.
Burnell sent me the scans shown in this post, and based on these cards I may have to give the App a try in 2016.  The design is the same as the 2015 flagship design with the exception of the Phillies "P" replacing the primary logo on the front and some dots appearing along the right borders.  Several Phillies players who were inexplicably omitted from the 2015 Topps Update set have cards available through the App, and I'll probably eventually print these to be added to my 2015 Phillies binder.

Interestingly enough, the images for Luis Garcia and Severino Gonzalez are swapped.

2014 Grandstand Reading Fightin Phils #14 Severino Gonzalez

Cardinals 11, Phillies 5
Game 21 - Tuesday Night, April 28th in St. Louis
Record - 8-13, Tied for 4th Place, 7 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Severino Gonzalez got knocked around in his Major League debut as the Cardinals easily handled the Phillies, 11-5.

What It Means:  Gonzalez was called upon to make a spot start as Chad Billingsley (currently on a rehab assignment in Triple A) is expected to join the rotation soon.

What Happened:  Gonzalez didn't escape the third inning and his final line wasn't pretty - seven runs on ten hits and two walks.

2015 Topps #118
Featured Cards:  I've already shown off one of the two cards of Gonzalez I have in my collection from 2014.  This the other 2014 card of his in my collection, from the Reading Fightin Phils team set.

Transactions:  Gonzalez had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley while reliever Hector Neris was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.  To make room for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster, pitcher Jonathan Pettibone was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

In a somewhat surprising roster move, Domonic Brown was activated from the disabled list . . . and then optioned to Lehigh Valley.  The official word is that the Phillies want him to get more at-bats.  Brown had 72 hours to report after being optioned and he was a no-show for the IronPigs last night.  He decided to report tonight and he's in the IronPigs starting line-up.

2014 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs #BCAP-SG Severino Gonzalez

Phillies 5, Braves 3
Spring Training Game 22 - Tuesday Afternoon, March 24th in Lake Buena Vista
Record - 11-10-1

One Sentence Summary:  Top prospect Severino Gonzalez made a cameo in big league camp, helping the Phillies defeat the Braves, 5-3.

What It Means:  Aaron Harang remained behind in Clearwater to pitch (and get hit hard) in a minor league game, so Gonzalez got the spot start in Disney World.

What Happened:  Ryan Howard and Darin Ruf hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning.  Brian Bogusevic added another hit (to raise his average to .393) and drove in two runs.

Featured Card:  Gonzalez pitched three scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out two.  He's ranked as the club's 15th top prospect by MLB.com.  To date, the only cards of his that I have are his 2013 Clearwater team issue, his 2014 Reading team issue and this autographed card from last year's Bowman Chrome set.
