Game 31 - Phils Can't Complete Sweep Due to Costly Error

1980-87 SSPC HOF #33

1976 Shakey's Pizza
Hall of Fame #86
2012 Panini Cooperstown #129

Washington Nationals  4
Philadelphia Phillies  2

Thursday Night, May 1st
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
17-14, 2nd Place, 3 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  A costly sixth inning error from Bryce Harper led to three unearned runs and an eventual 4-2 win by the Nationals.

What It Means:  The Diamondbacks come to town next for a weekend series.  Entering the series, both Phillies and Diamondbacks have an identical 17-14 record.

What Happened:  Taijuan Walker battled through 5 2/3 innings, making a few nice defensive plays, before the wheels came off in the sixth.  CJ Abrams doubled to start the inning, and James Wood lined a ball off Walker's leg with Walker recovering and throwing out Abrams at first.  Nathaniel Lowe singled to tie the game and Keibert Ruiz reached on an error by Bryce Harper, making it all the way to third and giving the Nationals a 2-1 lead.  Two more unearned runs would score in the inning.

The Phillies got RBI singles from Alec Bohm in the fifth and from Nick Castellanos in the sixth.

Featured Card:  The Phillies as a franchise played their first game on May 1, 1883, and the team made the interesting decision to "retire" three more player logos to be displayed among other retired numbers and insignias behind Ashburn Alley.  Uniform numbers weren't a thing until later in the franchise's history.  I've posted the link to the modest press release from the Phillies below, and the three Hall of Fame outfielders get the shared honor here of featured cards.

I have a few cards of each in my Phillies Collection, none of which are from their actual playing days.

On the 142nd anniversary of our very first game, we are proud to bestow our club's highest honor upon Ed Delahanty, Billy Hamilton, and Sam Thompson as we retire their uniform insignias. The only outfield in major league history where every player hit .400 (1894) – will take their rightful [1/2]

Saturday 1:10 and Sunday 10:10

London Stadium - London, England

At the Ballpark:  The long-awaited and highly anticipated London Series is here, and my only hope is it doesn't slow down the Phillies' momentum.  The Mets are the home team for Saturday's game with the Phillies as home team for Sunday's game.  There are all kinds of things going on before, during and after these games with a website dedicated to the weekend's happenings.

The Phillies and Mets are the second set of teams to participate in the London Series, following the Cardinals and Cubs series last year.  MLB Ambassador and former Phillies great Chase Utley is in the middle of the action, and I'd expect to see other former Phillies pop up in London throughout the weekend.

2024 Chachi #3 Bryce Harper

#3
Bryce Aron Max Harper
First Base

Bats:  Left  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'3"  Weight:  210
Opening Day Age:  31
Born:  October 16, 1992, Las Vegas, NV
Acquired:  Signed as a free agent with the Phillies, March 2, 2019
Contract Status:  Signed through 2031
Major League Teams:  Washington Nationals 2012-2018; Philadelphia Phillies 2019-2024
World Series Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022

The current face of the franchise, Bryce Harper is already in the sixth year of the 13-year contract he signed with the Phillies prior to the 2019 season.  Since signing the contract, he's won MVP honors in 2021, helped lead the team to the World Series in 2022 and to the NLCS in 2023.  His dramatic two-run home run against the Padres in 2022 NLCS Game 5 propelled the Phillies to the World Series and cemented his NLCS MVP honors.

Harper made the full-time move to first base for the 2024 season, and as of this writing he's off to a slower than normal start.  By the time he retires, Harper will likely have the most Chachi custom cards in the history of Chachi sets, surpassing the likes of Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

Game 136 - 2012 Topps Heritage #7 N.L. Pitching Leaders

Phillies 4
, Marlins 3 (10 Innings)
Game 136 - Sunday Afternoon, September 5th in Miami
Record - 70-66, 2nd Place, 2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies escaped Miami with a win, needing 10 innings and a clutch performance by the entire bullpen in the process.

What It Means:  The first place Brewers are up next with a three-game set in Milwaukee.  The Brewers hold a comfortable lead in the N.L. Central and are coming off a two-game winning streak.

What Happened:  This was a bullpen game as designed by manager Joe Girardi, and Sam Coonrod served as the opener.  Coonrod and Bailey Falter each allowed a run and a hit and the Marlins were held scoreless until a costly Brad Miller error in the sixth led to an unearned run, tying the score at 3-3.  The Phillies scored their first three runs via a solo home run from Bryce Harper in the fourth (his 27th) followed shortly by a two-run home run from Freddy Galvis.

In the 10th, and with two outs, Odubel Herrera singled home ghost-runner Galvis with the ultimate winning run.

Featured Card:  Ian Kennedy picked up the win with two scoreless (and perfect) innings that included four strikeouts.  His recent baseball card appearances are somewhat rare, although he did appear in the first series Topps flagship release from earlier this year.  The first cards of his in my Phillies collection came way back in 2012 when he shared a few League Leaders cards with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee in the 2012 Topps and 2012 Topps Heritage sets.

Game 117 - 2012 Topps #129 Matt Moore

Phillies 6
, Reds 1
Game 117 - Saturday Afternoon, August 14th in Philadelphia
Record - 61-56, Tied for 1st Place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Matt Moore and Hector Neris combined for seven no-hit innings against the Reds and the Phillies used some clutch hitting to pull out a 6-1 victory.

What It Means:  A series win is in sight with the Sunday afternoon finale and Aaron Nola on the mound.

What Happened:  Moore, who has been hit hard recently and hasn't started since July 27th, threw six no-hit innings, walking only two in what could have been one of the best starts of his career.  Neris prolonged the no-hitter for an inning before Archie Bradley allowed a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson to begin the eighth.

Ronald Torreyes homered in the first to start the scoring for the Phillies and J.T. Realmuto added an RBI-double in the sixth.  Insurance runs were added in the later innings via a Travis Jankowski RBI-single, a Bryce Harper RBI-triple with Harper then scoring on a head's up play when the shortstop lobbed the ball back to the pitcher's mound with no one covering home, and finally a solo home run from Andrew McCutchen.

Featured Card:  I've been fairly critical of Moore, but he turned in a pleasant surprise in this game with his nearly flawless performance.  Moore is a deserving candidate for a Phillies card in the Topps Update set, to be released later this year.

Transactions:  Bailey Falter (lhp) was activated from the Covid injured list and Adonis Medina (rhp) was recalled from Lehigh Valley.  Mickey Moniak (of) was optioned back down while David Paulino (rhp) was designated for assignment.
