Game 108 - 2019 Topps Allen & Ginter #147 J.T. Realmuto

Phillies 10Giants 2
Game 108 - Thursday Afternoon, August 1st in Philadelphia
Record - 57-51, Tied for 2nd place, 6 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The bats came alive as the Phillies scored early and often in this 10-2 matinee win over the Giants.

What It Means:  Having won the series against the Giants, the White Sox now come to town for a weekend series.

What Happened:  Cesar Hernandez and J.T. Realmuto each drove in three runs, while Realmuto and Scott Kingery each had three hits.  Hernandez (8), Realmuto (15) and Roman Quinn (2) all homered.  Jake Arrieta couldn't make it out of the fifth inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.  Ranger Suarez pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Featured Card:  Realmuto is starting to get hot at a crucial time and in his last five games, he's hitting .450 (9 for 20) with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Transactions:  Following the game, Nick Williams was optioned to Lehigh Valley and Jason Vargas was activated.  The Phillies also released Dylan Cozens who appeared in one game this season for the Phillies, going 0 for 1 as a pinch-hitter.  Once one of the team's top prospects, Cozens struggled in his short time in the Majors last season, hitting .158 (6 for 38) with 24 strikeouts.

Grapefruit Game 2 - 2018 Topps Gallery #95 Dylan Cozens

Pirates 3, Phillies 2
Spring Training Game 2 - Saturday Afternoon, February 23rd in Clearwater
Record - 1-1

One Sentence Summary:  Jason Martin hit a two-run home run off Phillies reliever Luke Leftwich in the 9th inning, sending the Pirates to a 3-2 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies will not finish the spring undefeated.  I'll happily admit that I recorded the TV broadcast of this game, worked a full day and then watched the game at night having already known the outcome.  It was glorious.

What Happened:  Enyel De Los Santos pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four.  Dylan Cozens, competing for an outfield bench spot, had a pair of doubles.  Jean Segura doubled in his first plate appearance for the Phillies.  Matt McBride added a solo home run in the 9th.

Featured Card:  I'm pulling for Cozens to have a big spring.  Topps resurrected its Gallery brand with a Walmart exclusive release in November.  The player selection for the Phillies in the 8-card team set is a bit odd with Cozens, Nick Pivetta and Victor Arano receiving cards but usual suspects Odubel Herrera, Maikel Franco and Jake Arrieta getting left out.

Camp Head Count:  61.  As an aside, like most Phillies fans I can not wait for the day when I can stop picking up my phone throughout the day, refreshing Twitter and hoping for some tidbit of news on Bryce Harper.  For now at least, the official camp head count remains at 61.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  August 24, 2014 - 2nd Annual Lakewood BlueClaws Outing . . . The BlueClaws are the Phillies Low A team playing in the South Atlantic League.  We were once again able to get first row tickets right behind the BlueClaws bullpen, and my oldest son Doug spent the bulk of the hour leading up to the game tracking down autographs.

He got autographs from BlueClaws home run leader (and Phillies top prospect) Dylan Cozens along with catcher Willians Astudillo.  He also got autographs from former big leaguers Gregg Legg and Les Lancaster, both of whom were ejected in this game for arguing balls and strikes.

Our youngest son Ben was the recipient of a baseball when BlueClaws starting pitcher Ranfi Casimiro finished his pre-game warm-up, walked over to Ben and handed him his ball.  I wanted to include Casimiro's card in this post because his generosity was such an awesome gesture.  There were a ton of kids seeking autographs (and demanding baseballs) in our section and Casimiro made it a point to walk over to the youngest, quietest kid and hand him a ball.  Ben went to bed clutching both the baseball and his new BlueClaws giant foam finger.

It was a great night of baseball along with a fun night for our family, and we'll be back for another game (or two) in 2015.

Game 59 - 2017 Bowman Platinum Top Prospects #TP-DC Dylan Cozens

Cubs 7, Phillies 5
Game 59 - Wednesday Night, June 6th in Chicago
Record - 32-27, 3rd place, 2 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Dylan Cozens' first career home run in the 9th was all for naught as Jason Heyward hit a walk-off grand slam off Adam Morgan to deliver the 7-5 win for the Cubs.

What It Means:  I really didn't want to go back, look at the box score for this game, and compose a post.  This is an example of a game I'd rather just skip.

What Happened:  Cozens' blast (1) gave the Phillies a momentary, euphoric 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th.  Seranthony Dominguez showed he was human allowing a walk and a single before he was lifted in favor of Morgan.  With the bases loaded, Heyward didn't miss the meatball Morgan put on a tee for him to launch into right-center field.

Aaron Altherr hit a 2-run home run (6) in the 6th and Aaron Nola allowed 3 runs on 4 hits over 6 innings pitched.

Featured Card:  I'll still give Cozens the card since the Phillies should have won this game.

Transaction:  J.P. Crawford was activated from the disabled list and Mitch Walding was sent back down to Lehigh Valley.

Game 55 - 2018 Bowman Prospects #BP63 Dylan Cozens

Giants 4, Phillies 0
Game 55 - Late Friday Night, June 1st in San Francisco
Record - 31-24, 3rd place, 2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Chris Stratton and three Giants relievers struck out 13 Phillies and held the offense to six hits in this 4-0 loss.

What It Means:  The Phillies have scored three runs in their past three games.  It's time for a break-out game.

What Happened:  Nick Pivetta labored through four innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits.  The struggles of Hector Neris continued as he allowed three hits and uncorked three wild pitches in his lone inning of work.  Scott Kingery had a pair of hits to raise his average to .226.

Featured Card:  Wearing #25, Dylan Cozens made his big league debut, starting in right field.  He singled on the first pitch he saw from Stratton, but struck out in his other two at-bats.  This is his newest card from the recent Bowman release.

2018 Spring Training Roster - Where They Went

2017 Topps Heritage
Minor League #28
When pitchers and catchers reported to Clearwater on February 14th, 63 players suited up for the Phillies.  They'd add one more on March 12th with the signing of pitcher Jake Arrieta.  Each year, I take a look at where the players who spent the spring with the club ended up.

The math this year worked out to 63 + 1 - 39 = 25, and here's a look at the break-down of the 39.

Disabled List (3):  Jerad Eickhoff, Tommy Hunter and Mark Leiter, Jr.

Released (5):  Fernando Abad, Ryan Flaherty, Francisco Rodriguez, Adam Rosales and Cameron Rupp

Abad signed with the Mets, Flaherty signed with the Braves and immediately hurt the Phillies, and Rosales signed with the Indians.  Rodriguez and Rupp haven't yet latched on elsewhere.

Claimed Off Waivers (1):  Tommy Joseph

Joseph went to the Rangers on a waiver claim.

Traded (2):  Eliezer Alvarez and Ricardo Pinto

Victims of the roster crunch, Alvarez was traded to the Rangers and Pinto went to the White Sox.

AAA - Lehigh Valley IronPigs (20):  Drew Anderson, Pedro Beato, Collin Cowgill, Dylan Cozens, Zac Curtis, Enyel Del Los Santos, Zach Eflin, Tom Eshelman, Cole Irvin, Brandon Leibrandt, Matt McBride, Heiker Meneses, Logan Moore, Danny Ortiz, Andrew Pullin, Roman Quinn, Nick Rickles, Yacksel Rios, Jesmuel Valentin and Mitch Walding

Rios didn't even get a chance to try on his IronPigs uniform as he summoned to the Phillies the second day of the season when Pat Neshek was disabled.

AA - Reading Fightin Phils (3):  Seranthony Dominguez, Franklyn Kilome and Ranger Suarez

A - Clearwater Threshers (3):  Jake Arrieta, Edgar Cabral and J.D. Hammer

Arrieta will be recalled on April 8th to make his first start of the season for the Phillies.

Disabled List/Extended Spring Training (2):  Will Middlebrooks and Jose Taveras

Grapefruit Game 15 - 2017 Topps Heritage Minor League #191 Home Run Leaders

Pirates 5, Phillies 4
Spring Training Game 15 - Friday Afternoon, March 9th in Clearwater
Record - 6-9

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies couldn't overcome an early deficit as the Pirates won the game, 5-4.

What It Means:  We're getting closer to meaningful baseball.

What Happened:  Rhys Hoskins had a single and double with two RBIs.  Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera both enjoyed multi-hit games.  Jerad Eickhoff was touched for four runs in his 3 1/3 inning start, allowing five hits while striking out three.  Jake Thompson looked good in his three scoreless innings of work.

Featured Card:  Top prospect Dylan Cozens, optioned to minor league camp following the game (see below), had a rough spring (.174 in 10 games) but he'll get some much-needed playing time with the IronPigs.  The Phillies are hoping Cozens follows the path of fellow top prospect Rhys Hoskins in the coming months, eventually joining Hoskins in the heart of the Phillies line-up.

Camp Head Count:  60 - 5 = 55.  Prior to the game, pitchers Franklyn Kilome, Ranger Suarez and Jose Taveras were optioned to minor league camp.  After the game, infielder Eliezer Alvarez and outfielder Cozens were also optioned to minor league camp.

Phillies Minor League Free Agents & Chachi Almost Cards

2017 Chachi Almost #18
2017 Chachi Almost #20
2017 Topps Update #US171
On Tuesday, Baseball America published a list of 572 new minor league free agents and the list included 16 players from the Phillies organization.  Players in red below saw time with the Phillies over the past few seasons.

RHP:  Michael Mariot, Colton Murray, Miguel Nunez, Jesen Therrien
LHP:  Cesar Ramos
RHP/LHP:  Pat Venditte
C:  Wilson Garcia, Chace Numata, Nick Rickles
1B:  Jake Fox, Brock Stassi
2B:  Angelo Mora
3B:  Harold Martinez
SS:  Hector Gomez
OF:  Christian Marrero, Herlis Rodriguez

Both Mariot and Murray spent time in the Phillies bullpen during the 2016 season, but neither got the call all season long in 2017.  Stassi provided a feel-good story coming out of spring training, as the 27-year-old rookie made the Phillies' opening day roster.  In 51 games, he hit .167 with a pair of home runs and he earned baseball cards in the Topps Heritage High Numbers and Topps Update sets for his efforts.

Moving On - 2017-2018 Offseason
  • Henderson Alvarez - rhp (10/4/17) - Outrighted off 40-man roster and elected free agency.
  • Ty Kelly - 2b-of (10/4/17) - Outrighted off 40-man roster and elected free agency.

I also wanted to clear out my draft folder of a bunch of Chachi Almost cards.  I make cards during spring training of every player on the 40-man roster as well as each non-roster invitee if a good photo becomes available.  These cards wait patiently all season to perhaps become official Chachi cards, but if the player doesn't get the call the cards join the Chachi Almost insert set.  Mark Appel, Dylan Cozens, Elniery Garcia, Scott Kingery, Logan Moore, Shane Pullin, Roman Quinn and Alberto Tirado should all be in the mix when the Phillies head to Clearwater in February.

Hector Gomez, Mariot, Murray, Chace Numata and Cesar Ramos will be moving on.

2016 Choice Reading Fightin Phils Top Prospects #2 Dylan Cozens

Phillies 6, Spartans 0
Exhibition Game - Thursday Afternoon, February 23rd in Clearwater

One Sentence Summary:  BASEBALL!

What It Means:  Before the official exhibition season begins, the Phillies have in recent years played a pre-exhibition game against a college team.  Statistics from these pre-exhibition games don't count towards the official spring tally, but the game is a nice way for me to dust off my game summary post skills.

What Happened:  Roman Quinn (2 for 3, two runs scored, solo home) and Dylan Cozens (2 for 3, 4 RBIs, 2-run home run) paced the offense as the Phillies top prospects defeated the University of Tampa squad.  Mark Leiter, Jr. and six other pitchers held the Spartans to two hits.

Featured Card:  Cozens gets the honors in this year's first pre-exhibition, non-official game summary post.  The Reading Fightin Phils, Double-A affiliate for the Phillies, issued four separate team sets last season and that doesn't include their special 50 Greatest Players give-away set.  This card, from the 11-card Top Prospects set, has a vague 1956 Topps-ish vibe.

Camp Head Count:  62.  The Phillies broke camp with four fewer players than last season when they carried 66 players at the outset of spring training.  I'll track the departure of 37 players as the team shrinks its roster to the 25 who will head north.

On Friday afternoon, in the biggest 40-man roster overhaul in recent memory, the Phillies dropped three players and added 11 in preparation for the upcoming Rule 5 draft.  Over the past seven offseasons, the most prospects added to the 40-man roster in November prior to this was five.  Here's a look at the 11 players added, their 2016 clubs, and a few brief notes.
  • Drew Anderson (rhp) - Lakewood/Clearwater - Struck out 78 in 70 innings and pitched the first four innings of a combined Threshers no-hitter in July.
  • Mark Appel (rhp) - Lehigh Valley - Acquired from the Astros in the Ken Giles trade and missed most of the season with a shoulder injury.
  • Dylan Cozens (of) - Reading - Co-winner (with Rhys Hoskins) of the 2016 Paul Owens Award for the best Phillies position player in their minor leagues.

2016 Grandstand Reading Fightin Phils #6 Dylan Cozens

Braves 6Phillies 4 (10)
Game 135 - Saturday Night, September 3rd in Philadelphia
Record - 60-75, 4th place, 19 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  For the second night in a row, the Phillies couldn't hold off the Braves and sloppy defense led to a 6-4 extra-inning Braves win.

What It Means:  At least the crab fries were delicious.

What Happened:  With the Phillies up 4-3, Chase d'Arnaud hit a foul pop that Maikel Franco droppped.  d'Arnaud would walk and eventually come around to tie the score on an infield ground-out.  Edubray Ramos walked the lead-off batter in the 10th, and he would score the go-ahead run.

Franco went 4 for 5 with three doubles.  In a three-run third inning, Cesar Hernandez hit a solo home run (6) and Cameron Rupp added a two-run double.

Vince Velasquez made his final start of the season.  In his post-game comments, manager Pete Mackanin announced that Velasquez would be shut down the rest of the year to preserve his arm for 2017 and future years.  He pitched well in his final start, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out eight over seven innings.

Featured Card:  I also wanted to congratulate Reading outfielder Dylan Cozens who set the Double-A franchise's single-season home run and RBI records with 39 and 123 respectively.  He and Rhys Hoskins (37 home runs and 114 RBIs) have had monster years for the Fightin Phils.

Field Report:  Doug and I were there along with about 5,000 of our closest friends and fellow die-hard Phillies fans.  It was actually a pleasant and enjoyable night at the ballpark, with the exception of the whole losing in the 10th inning thing.

As discussed in this post, I'm taking a poll on how collectors track baseball card collections.

Please vote in the poll on the sidebar if you haven't already.  Thanks!

2016 Topps #133 Aaron Nola

Phillies 5Rays 2
Spring Training Game 17 - Tuesday Afternoon, March 15th in Clearwater
Record - 11-4-2

One Sentence Summary:  Key hits from Andres Blanco and Darnell Sweeney helped the Phillies come from behind with four runs in the eighth inning to win their 11th game of the spring.

What It Means:  Let's start the season!

What Happened:  Cesar Hernandez had two more hits in this game and Cedric Hunter hit his second home run.  Aaron Nola gave up two runs on six hits in his 4 2/3 innings of work.  He also struck out five.

Featured Card:  Nola enjoyed his best outing of the spring.  Coincidentally, if he continues to pitch every fifth day, he's on track to start opening day on April 4th against the Reds.  This card marks Nola's first appearance in a Topps flagship set.

Camp Head Count:  57 - 2 = 55 - Two potential starting rotation candidates were sent packing on Tuesday morning as Alec Asher and David Buchanan were both optioned to the IronPigs.  The fifth spot in the starting pitching rotation is going to go to Adam Morgan, Brett Oberholtzer or Vince Velasquez.  Nola, Jerad Eickhoff, Jeremy Hellickson and Charlie Morton have the first four spots locked down.

Uniform Number Update:  Readers of this blog, all three or four of you, may recall I posted last week that Aaron Altherr had switched his uniform number to #9.  Reviewing the team's online roster last night, it appears as if he's now back to #23.  So never mind.

And I'm not sure what I find this so intriguing, but the Phillies have updated their online roster page with the names and numbers of those minor leaguers who get invited to accompany the big team on any given day.  Here's the updated list, which includes some additions from last week's list:
