2024 Chachi #21 Seranthony Dominguez

#58 / Seranthony Ambioris Dominguez / Relief Pitcher
Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  225
Opening Day Age:  29
Born:  November 25, 1994, Esperanza, Dominican Republic
Acquired:  Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent, October 6, 2011
Major League Teams:  Philadelphia Phillies 2018-19, 2021-24; Baltimore Orioles 2024
Postseason Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022-23; Baltimore Orioles 2024

2024 Philadelphia Phillies
Kids Club / Club 215
The one-time closer for the Phillies, Seranthony Dominguez will be remembered for the immense promise he showed as a rookie in 2018 and for the gritty performances he gave the club during the 2022 regular and postseason.  Dominguez pitched in 38 games for the Phillies in 2024, going 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA over 36 innings pitched.  He had one save, the last of his 28 career saves with the team.  On July 26th, Dominguez and Cristian Pache were traded to the Orioles for outfielder Austin Hays.  Hays is already gone from the Phillies, but Dominguez seems to have re-established himself with the Orioles as an effective late inning reliever.  He had 10 saves with the club over the final months of the season and had two scoreless appearances against the Royals in the ALWCS.

Game 103 - Phils Look Un-Lively; Acquire Hays for Dominguez, Pache

2018 Choice Lehigh Valley
IronPigs #15
Guardians 3
Phillies 1
Game 103 - Friday Night, July 26th in Philadelphia
Record - 64-39, 1st Place, 9 games ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Ben Lively and the Guardians' bullpen silenced the Phillies' bats in this 3-1 series opening loss.

What It Means:  The Phillies are suddenly not fun to watch.  They look as if they're pressing and I'm hoping they find their groove again soon.  The surging Mets are now in second place, a half game ahead of the Braves.

What Happened:  Lively improved to 9-6 with six strong innings, allowing just a fifth inning solo home run to Bryson Stott.  Stott had a three-hit night and Alec Bohm had a double, with the two through seven spots in the line-up going a combined 1 for 24.  Cristopher Sanchez dropped to 7-6, allowing all three Guardians runs on eight hits.

Featured Card:   Lively was designated for assignment in September 2018 by the Phillies and claimed off waivers by the Royals, when a roster spot was needed for Jerad Eickhoff.  He's since spent time with the Royals, in Korea and with the Reds, and he's been pitching well for Cleveland this season.

Transaction:  On Friday afternoon, the Phillies announced the first of possibly many trades in advance of Tuesday's trade deadline.  Austin Hays (of) was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles for Seranthony Dominguez (rhp) and Cristian Pache (of).  Hays is expected to see quite a bit of playing time in left field, with a likely platoon in center developing with Johan Rojas and Brandon Marsh.  Hays was an All-Star in 2023, and he's batting .255 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 63 games this season.

Dominguez, the team's closer at one point, appeared in at least 50 games for the Phillies in 2018, 2022 and 2023.  In 230 games, he was 19-17 with a 3.55 ERA and 28 saves, with 16 blown saves.  Dominguez was a huge part of the Phillies' pennant-winning bullpen in 2022, and was the winning pitcher in NLDS Game 1 against the Braves and in World Series Game 1 agains the Astros.  I currently have 22 baseball cards for Dominguez in my Phillies Collection, dating back to his first appearance in 2016 in the Williamsport Crosscutters team set.  (It seems as if that number should be higher, but such is the fate of a reliever in today's baseball card sets.)

Pache had a few big highlights with the Phillies, but had largely struggled at the plate since joining the team right before opening day in 2023.  In 98 games with the Phillies overall, he batted .218 with a pair of home runs and 20 RBIs.  I've got six Pache cards in my Phillies Collection.

Game 58 - Nola handles Cards Under Friday Night Lights

2024 Philadelphia Phillies
Kids Club
Phillies 4
Cardinals 2
Game 58 - Friday Night, May 31st in Philadelphia
Record - 40-18, 1st Place, 6 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Edmundo Sosa hit a two-run home run and Aaron Nola was again effective as the Phillies won their 40th game of the season, 4-2 over the Cardinals.

What It Means:  The Phillies are the first team in baseball this season to win 40 games.  Hard to believe, Harry.

What Happened:  Nola picked up his seventh win, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing a pair of solo home runs.  Jeff Hoffman got the ninth, striking out a pair and recording his fifth save.

Sosa hit his blast as we were riding the escalator up to our seats, so sadly we only saw it on replays.  In the seventh, Brandon Marsh doubled and Johan Rojas singled him home for an insurance run.  Bryson Stott played stellar defense in this game, making a few fantastic plays.

Featured Card:  Here's Nola's Kids Club card, and I kind of hope the Phillies make a few more of these for players omitted from the first run.  Notably, Sosa, Spencer Turnbull, Kody Clemens, Orion Kerkering and Gregory Soto didn't receive cards.

Field Report:  Jenna and I were there, and we continued with our 2024 pre-game ritual of enjoying dinner at Pass at Stow before heading to our seats in Section 315.  It was a gorgeous night for baseball, made even better by the outcome.  Before navigating through the crowd to Pass and Stow, we stopped by the Kids Club kiosk to pick up two more cards for our set, with only the Taijuan Walker card now remaining.

Game 25 - Turnbull Deals, but Bullpen Falters in Loss to Reds

2023 Topps Update #US278
Reds 7
, Phillies 4
Game 25 - Wednesday Night, April 24th in Cincinnati
Record - 15-10, 2nd Place, 3 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Spencer Turnbull turned in yet another strong start, but the bullpen, and especially Seranthony Dominguez, struggled as the Reds came back to win, 7-4.

What It Means:  After a week of good vibes, the Phillies strung together back-to-back fairly ugly losses.

What Happened:  Turnbull's five innings of allowing just one run dropped his ERA to 1.33.  Dominguez looked lost in the sixth inning, recording only two outs and giving up four runs on four hits and a pair of walks.  Gregory Soto and Jose Alvarado would allow the Reds to tack on two more runs.

The offense had a strong night, with Alec Bohm going 4 for 4.  Both Whit Merrifield and Edmundo Sosa had multi-hit games.

Featured Card:  Here's hoping Dominguez can turn it around, as he has a 9.72 ERA through his first 10 appearances and 8 1/3 innings pitched of 2024.  The popular reliever was in the Topps Update set last year.

Spring Training Game 22 - Luplow Homers in Debut, Phils Tie Again

2022 Topps Heritage #21
Phillies 5
, Blue Jays 5
Spring Training Game 22 - Sunday Afternoon, March 16th in Clearwater
Record - 8-9-5

One Sentence Summary:  For the fifth time this spring, the Phillies played to a tie after the bullpen couldn't lock down the win.

What It Means:  The Phillies wore green hats in honor of St. Patrick's Day, and for the second year in a row the Phillies were not also wearing green jerseys.  The green jerseys were a tradition started in 1986 with the help of Tug McGraw, and ended in 2021 when Nike took over manufacturing MLB's uniforms.  The graphic below is from Phillies Nation's X feed.

What Happened:  Zack Wheeler had another solid spring outing, allowing a run on three hits in his four innings of work.  Spring training stats don't mean much, but Wheeler's 2.00 ERA through three starts and nine innings pitched is impressive.  Following the game, manager Rob Thomson named Wheeler the opening day starter, ending Aaron Nola's streak at six straight opening day starts.  The Phillies held a 5-4 lead going into the eighth, but Austin Brice blew his third save of the spring as the Blue Jays tied up the score.

Cristian Pache and Rodolfo Castro both doubled in the second, giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead.  A Kyle Schwarber single in the fourth made it 4-1 Phillies, and newcomer Jordan Luplow hit a solo home run in the sixth.

Featured Card:  I'm not sure why the Phillies would sign Luplow so late in spring training, unless they didn't feel as if Jake Cave or Pache were going to be viable options as back-up outfielders.  Luplow last appeared on mainstream baseball cards in 2022, including this card from the Topps Heritage set.

2023 Chachi #26 Seranthony Dominguez

#58
Seranthony Ambioris Dominguez
Relief Pitcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  225
Opening Day Age:  28
Born:  November 25, 1994, Esperanza, Dominican Republic
Acquired:  Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent, October 6, 2011
Contract Status:  Signed through 2024 with 2025 team option
Major League Teams:  Philadelphia Phillies 2018-2019, 2021-2023
World Series Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022

Suddenly one of the longest tenured players on the team, Seranthony Dominguez was first recalled by Gabe Kapler's Phillies on May 7, 2018 when Adam Morgan landed on the disabled list with a back strain.  Dominguez has served at times as the team's closer ever since, although he's still trying to recapture the success he found in 2018 when he saved 16 games.  He missed all of 2020 and all but one game in 2021 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

As noted in the team's Media Guide, Dominguez began the postseason with 18 strikeouts and no walks, which is the longest walkless streak by any pitcher at the start of his postseason career.  He converted a crucial two-inning save in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Padres, and was the winning pitcher in World Series Game 1 following the Phillies come from behind 6-5 win over the Astros.

NLCS Game 3 - Seranthony and Segura Star in Tense Win

Phillies 4
, Padres 2
NLCS Game 3 - Friday Night, October 21st in Philadelphia
Phillies lead series, 2-1

One Sentence Summary:  Jean Segura went from goat to hero and Seranthony Dominguez recorded a six-out save to secure this 4-2 win and put the Phillies two more wins away from the World Series.

What It Means:  Dominguez joined Tug McGraw as the only two pitchers in franchise history to record six-out saves in a postseason game.  McGraw did it in the decisive Game 6 of the 1980 World Series, 42 years ago on this very day.

What Happened / Featured Card:  The Phillies jumped to a quick 1-0 lead when Kyle Schwarber homered to start the game, but the Padres rallied in the fourth when Segura dropped a likely double play relay, allowing the tying run to score.  He earned redemption in the bottom of the inning, singling home both Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead.  (And then was promptly picked off first!)  The Padres crept closer when an RBI ground out from Ha-Seong Kim in the fifth, making it 3-2.  Bohm provided a much-needed insurance run with a huge RBI double in the sixth, scoring Nick Castellanos.

Ranger Suarez started and pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two his.  The bullpen trio of Zach Eflin, Jose Alvarado and Dominguez pitched the final four scoreless innings, allowing five hits but striking out five along the way.  Dominguez recorded the final out, striking out Austin Nola swinging, allowing all of Philadelphia to breath a sigh of relief.

Field Report:  I attended my first NLCS game since 2010 and Doug enjoyed his first ever NLCS game.  With a big baseball tournament planned for the weekend in Rehobeth Beach, this was the only game we were able to attend and we admittedly needed to leave early to ensure Doug got a good night's sleep.  But the place was electric.  We both bought $10 NLCS programs from the pop-up tent outside the ballpark, enjoyed a few Humpty's Dumplings from a food truck while waiting to enter, and made our way with over 45,000 other fans into the ballpark when gates opened at 5:07.  We heard an announcement that Matt Stairs and Charlie Manuel would be signing autographs on the rooftop deck until 6, and we quickly got in line, just before security cut the line off.  Unfortunately, Stairs and Manuel had to leave promptly at 6, and we were about 15 people away from securing our autographs.  We snagged a few pre-signed Stairs photo cards as consolation prizes.

After a quick bite from Bull's BBQ, we made our way to Section 113 where we rarely sat for the next seven innings.  We high-fived strangers, joined the Mus-grove, We Chose Harper and Aaron's Better chants and lost our collective minds when Segura delivered his big hit.  It was an experience neither of us will soon forget!

2020 Chachi Almost #20
2020 Chachi Almost #16

In an effort to put the 2020 Phillies season behind me as quickly as possible, I wanted to get this post out of the way.  Every year, I create my custom Chachi cards during the offseason and the early stages of spring training, which means I end up with several "Almost" cards of players who didn't get the call to the big club during the season.  Those cards are presented here.

Victor Arano, Seranthony Dominguez and David Robertson spent the season either injured, recovering from an injury or getting surgery to repair an injury.  Arano and Dominguez should return, while Robertson will not.  Despite the bullpen's woes, JD Hammer never got the call to join the team and Odubel Herrera remains exiled following his arrest for domestic violence last year.  Christian Bethancourt was a non-roster invitee to spring training and then disappeared, with no sign of any transaction (that I can find) to tell us where he ended up.  Finally, veterans Mikie Mahtook and Nick Martini were also non-roster invitees who later joined the taxi squad in Allentown as part of the team's 60-player pool.  Neither got the call to leave Lehigh Valley and travel to Philadelphia.

Also presented below is a final look at the team's 2019-2020 offseason moves and other player additions and deletions during the pandemic-shortened season.  For some reason, I failed to post my Departures cards of Fernando Salas and Mitch Walding when they originally left the team and solely for the sake of completeness, they're presented here.

Phillies Announce Initial Player Pool

2020 Chachi Almost #2

2020 Chachi Almost #3

2020 Topps Total #155

2019 Grandstand Reading
Fightin Phils Update #4
Where were we?

On March 13th, I posted the final spring training game summary post from the game played on Thursday afternoon, March 12th.  The Phillies won, 8-4 against the Rays in Port Charlotte.  Following that game, baseball went on indefinite hiatus as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic.  A few weeks later, on March 26th, I posted on what would have been Opening Day with the mundane news that the Phillies had optioned six players to Lehigh Valley and the active roster (including non-roster invitees) stood at 52.

While live baseball was paused, I started going through my 1985 Phillies Scrapbook, posting game summary posts 35 years after the fact.  My plan is to keep doing those posts from 1985 through July 16th and that year's All-Star Game.  I'll then (hopefully) return to live baseball posts as the Phillies are set to open their 2020 season on either July 23rd or July 24th.  I've read reports that up to three exhibition games will be played prior to the start of the regular season.

Which brings us to today.  On Sunday, the Phillies released their initial Player Pool with 53 players, out of a potential 60, that will be eligible for play during the shortened 60-game season.  For the first time since March 26th, here's the updated math for the Camp Head Count, and it's a bit convoluted how we got here.

Camp Head Count:  This is best explained in steps, and keep in mind we were at 52 back on March 26th.
  • Minus 2 - Non-roster invitees Drew Storen (rhp) and Matt Szczur (of) were released.
  • Minus 1 - The injured Seranthony Dominguez (rhp) was placed on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.  He's headed for Tommy John surgery and will miss significant time.
  • Minus 7 - Seven players who had been non-roster invitees were not included on the initial Player Pool list, including Christian Bethancourt (c), JD Hammer (rhp), Henri Lartigue (c), Nick Maton (inf), Mickey Moniak (of), Anthony Swarzak (rhp) and Luke Williams (inf).
  • Plus 10 - Ten players who had been optioned or re-assigned earlier in the year were brought back and added to the Player Pool list - Garrett Cleavinger (lhp), Edgar Garcia (rhp), Kyle Garlick (of), Deivy Grullon (c), Cole Irvin (lhp), Damon Jones (lhp), Mauricio Llovera (rhp), Reggie McClain (rhp), JoJo Romero (lhp) and Nick Williams (of).
  • Plus 1 - Pitching prospect Connor Seabold, not included as a non-roster invitee back in February/March was added to the list.
If you're keeping score at home, that's 52 - 2 - 1 - 7 + 10 + 1 = 53.

Notable omissions include Austin Davis (lhp) and Odubel Herrera (of).  The Phillies currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster, with four players left off this initial Player Pool list - Davis, Adonis Medina (rhp), Cristopher Sanchez (lhp) and Arquimedes Gamboa (inf).  Two veterans from the original non-roster invitee list who could eventually be added to the Player Pool are Bethancourt and Swarzak.

Grapefruit Game 17 - 2019 Topps Heritage #302 Seranthony Dominguez

Blue Jays 9, Phillies 0
Spring Training Game 17 - Sunday Afternoon, March 8th in Dunedin
Record - 11-5-1

One Sentence Summary:  The offense had only three hits and Vince Velasquez looked shaky in this 9-0 drubbing from the Blue Jays.

What It Means:  At this point, I would think Velasquez ends up in the bullpen and the fifth starter's job either goes to Nick Pivetta or Ranger Suarez, the dark horse candidate.

What Happened:  Velasquez labored through 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks.  Both hits allowed were home runs.  Deolis Guerra and Seranthony Dominguez each threw a scoreless inning of relief.

Featured Card:  If Dominguez is healthy to start the season, that would be huge for the Phillies bullpen.  This was his second appearance and while he's only thrown 10 pitches, he hasn't allowed a hit and he's struck out two while his fastball has been in the low to mid 90s.
