Game 21 - Phils Adrift in a Sea of Losses

Atlanta Braves  4
Philadelphia Phillies  2

2015 Topps Update #US166
Sunday Night, April 19th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
8-13, 4th Place, 6 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies went relatively quietly against the Braves, dropping this game on a rainy and raw Sunday night in front of a national audience and limping out of town to Chicago.

What It Means:  I'm not joining the portion of the fanbase calling for Rob Thomson to be fired.  I don't think a new manager would be able to figure out why none of the team's sluggers are doing their jobs, and I never think panic is a viable strategy.  I do think changes are needed, and maybe that's a shake-up with the coaching staff, a trade, a high-profile demotion . . . something.

What Happened:  The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kyle Schwarber dropped his seventh home run of the year just over the right field wall.  Trea Turner had singled in front of him to start the game.  And that was the run output for the night.  They had chances, going 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, but a big inning or a clutch hit just never showed up.  Andrew Painter went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  Tim Mayza entered the game in a critical spot and allowed both of his inherited runners from Painter to score.  In the bottom of the ninth, with two runners on, Schwarber lined out to Ronald Acuna, Jr. to end the game, in what likely would have been a game-tying double with anyone else in right field.

Featured Card:  This is the team's worst start through 21 games since the 99-loss 2015 season when they also started 8-13.  Manager Ryne Sandberg would announce he had had enough that June and he was replaced by Pete Mackanin on an interim basis.  That team fell to 8-13 on April 28, 2015 in a 11-5 loss to the Cardinals.  Starter Severino Gonzalez allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings.  This 2026 Phillies team is currently giving me 2015 vibes.

Spring Training Game 12 - Oh Canada!

Canada  5
Philadelphia Phillies  3

2015 Topps Update #US318
Spring Training Game 12
Wednesday Afternoon, March 4th
BayCare Ballpark - Clearwater, FL
Record - 3-8-1

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts, but Team Canada took care of the Phillies by a score of 5-3.

What It Means:  I took the photo below of a graphic displayed on a recent Phillies broadcast of all the team's players competing the next few weeks in the World Baseball Classic.  I wish I could get more excited about this exhibition tournament, and I like the concept of it, but I'm still not a huge fan.  Rojas has since been sent home from the Dominican Republic team, but he did make an impressive diving catch as the first out in this game.

What Happened:  There's a theory that Nola only pitches well in even-numbered years, so hopefully that pattern holds true come April.  Jhoan Duran made his spring debut and pitched a scoreless fourth inning.  Canada scored four of its runs off Jonathan Bowlan in the sixth as the reliever didn't retire a batter but gave up three hits and a walk.  Bryan De La Cruz, now suddenly with a potential roster spot if Rojas is suspended, had an RBI single in the second.  Alec Bohm hit a solo home run in the fourth.

Featured Card:  Phillippe Aumont, who pitched for the Phillies in 46 games between 2012 and 2015, relieved for Canada in the sixth inning, shutting down Adolis Garcia, Bryson Stott and De La Cruz.  Aumont is now 37 and last pitched professionally in 2019.  He threw three innings of relief for Canada in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Game 22 - Jesus Saves, Orion Does Not in Loss to Fish

Miami Marlins  7
Philadelphia Phillies  5
10 Innings

2015 Philadelphia Phillies
Pope Francis Rookie Card SGA
Sunday Afternoon, April 20th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
13-9, 2nd Place, 2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  With a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning, Orion Kerkering allowed three runs to score, and the Phillies ultimately lost in extra innings, 7-5.

What It Means:  The bullpen has emerged as an early problem area for the Phillies, with only Jose Alvarado and Matt Strahm consistently reliable.  The two bullpen acquisition of Joe Ross (7.45 ERA in 9 2/3 innings) and Jordan Romano (15.26 ERA in 7 2/3 innings) have been disappointing, while the departed Jeff Hoffman, Carlos Estevez and Seranthony Dominguez are all finding success with their new teams.  This loss can be pinned on Kerkering and Strahm, who couldn't pitch a clean 10th inning.

What Happened:  Luzardo went seven strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out seven.  The Phillies plated three runs in the first inning.  Bryson Stott singled, stole second and came home on Bryce Harper's double.  Nick Castellanos would later single Harper home.  Rafael Marchan singled home the team's fourth run in the fourth.

Featured Card:  On Monday morning, we learned Pope Francis had passed away at the age of 88 following a stroke.  When he visited Philadelphia in 2015, the Phillies gave away his "rookie card" as an unannounced giveaway prior to a game (or games?) that September.  I'm not sure exactly when the cards were handed out, as the Pope was in town on September 26th and 27th, and the Phillies were in Washington on those days for a series against the Nationals.

Transaction:  In the first roster move of the season, Brandon Marsh (of) was placed on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain and Cal Stevenson (of) was recalled from Lehigh Valley.

Game 10 - Outfield Miscue, Bullpen Cause Win to Slip Away

Philadelphia Phillies  5
Atlanta Braves  7

2015 Bowman
Prospects Yellow #BP95
Tuesday Night, April 8th
Truist Park - Atlanta, GA
7-3, 2nd Place, 1/2 game behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Advertised as a pitcher's duel between Chris Sale and Zack Wheeler, this game ended up having a little bit of everything as the Phillies fell short, 7-5.

What It Means:  It's a very long season, and we're only at the start of it, but the Phillies fell into second place with this loss, coupled with a six-game winning streak by the Mets.

What Happened:  The Phillies struck first when Nick Castellanos singled home Alec Bohm in the first inning.  Sean Murphy connected for a three-run home run in the second, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead.  The Phils battled back with three of their own in the top of the third, on a two-run triple from Kyle Schwarber and an RBI-double from Castellanos.  Schwarber blasted a 462-foot two-run home run to center to make it 5-3 Phillies, and he'd fall a double short of the cycle.  And there ended the highlights for the good guys.

The Braves tied the game in the sixth, chasing Wheeler in the process.  Orion Kerkering and Tanner Banks allowed a pair of runs to score in the seventh and eighth innings, giving the Braves a 7-5 lead.

Featured Card:  Manager Rob Thomson is trying to keep the hot bat of Edmundo Sosa in the line-up, so Sosa got a start in left field, his first time starting at that position in the majors.  In the bottom of the first, Sosa leaped over the left field wall to catch and bring back what would have been a home run from Marcell Ozuna.  In the bottom of the second, miscommunication between Sosa and center fielder Johan Rojas allowed a ball to drop right in front of Rojas, prolonging the inning and ultimately leading to Murphy's three-run home run.

I recently discovered this card in my collection, of a teenage Sosa, as I'm slowly adding cards from my "Doubles / Everything Else" collection to TCDB.  It looks like he's standing in a puddle?

2024 Chachi #4 J.T. Realmuto

#10
Jacob Tyler Realmuto
Catcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  212
Opening Day Age:  33
Born:  March 18, 1991, Del City, OK
Acquired:  Traded by the Marlins to the Phillies for Will Stewart, Jorge Alfaro, Sixto Sanchez and international bonus slot money, February 7, 2019
Contract Status:  Signed through 2025
Major League Teams:  Miami Marlins 2014-2018; Philadelphia Phillies 2019-2024
World Series Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022

Informally known in Philadelphia as the BCIB (best catcher in baseball), J.T. Realmuto begins his sixth season with the Phillies after being acquired from the Marlins in February 2019.  He entered free agency following the 2020 season, re-signing with the Phillies for five years.  He's a three-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger winner and a Gold Glove recipient in 2019 and 2022.  Realmuto enjoyed a career year for the National League Champions in 2022, batting .276 with career highs in home runs (22), RBIs (84) and stolen bases (21).  He started 130 out of 162 games in 2022 behind the plate, and caught every inning of all 17 Phillies postseason games.  Realmuto was just as durable in 2023, again making 130 starts behind the plate and helping to lead the Phillies to the NLCS.

2024 Chachi #3 Bryce Harper

#3
Bryce Aron Max Harper
First Base

Bats:  Left  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'3"  Weight:  210
Opening Day Age:  31
Born:  October 16, 1992, Las Vegas, NV
Acquired:  Signed as a free agent with the Phillies, March 2, 2019
Contract Status:  Signed through 2031
Major League Teams:  Washington Nationals 2012-2018; Philadelphia Phillies 2019-2024
World Series Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022

The current face of the franchise, Bryce Harper is already in the sixth year of the 13-year contract he signed with the Phillies prior to the 2019 season.  Since signing the contract, he's won MVP honors in 2021, helped lead the team to the World Series in 2022 and to the NLCS in 2023.  His dramatic two-run home run against the Padres in 2022 NLCS Game 5 propelled the Phillies to the World Series and cemented his NLCS MVP honors.

Harper made the full-time move to first base for the 2024 season, and as of this writing he's off to a slower than normal start.  By the time he retires, Harper will likely have the most Chachi custom cards in the history of Chachi sets, surpassing the likes of Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

The First Phillie - 2024 Topps!

Topps mixed things up this year, making collectors wait until January 11th to reveal the design of its 2024 flagship set.  In year's past, the design was released in August or September and when the season came to a close with no announcement and no inkling as to what the 2024 Topps cards would look like, I was a little worried.  I prepared myself to be underwhelmed whenever the design was finally released.

My first thought on seeing the design in mid-January:  These are cool.  My second thought:  The neon-like team name is fantastic, and how has Topps not done this before?  This is what a baseball card in 2024 should look like.  It's a modern look with the foggy border elements Topps likes so much from recent years, but collectors are given a solid photo, a unique way of presenting the team name, the team logo and clearly legible names and positions.  It's a great looking card, and it springs to the top of my list of favorite Topps flagship releases over the past 10 years.

The set was officially released on Valentine's Day, but I didn't open my first packs until February 19th.  My wife Jenna found three blaster boxes at our local Target that day, and I happily opened all three after dinner.  In the past, we've made a big show of the first packs of the year, but this year was a little more subdued.  The First Phillie hunt was extremely anti-climatic, as J.T. Realmuto was staring at me atop the first plastic-wrapped bunch of 59 cards I took from the first box I opened.

This is an exciting design, and Topps clearly creates its base cards now to work well with multiple parallel versions.  It wasn't until I had the cards in hand that I realized the team name and photo borders have foil-like features to them.  Scans don't do the cards justice, as these elements can't really be seen unless you're holding them.  I had a blue-bordered Alec Bohm card in one of my three boxes, and I like the full blue border more than the smoky black and white border on the normal base cards.  That's my only complaint, and if I had designed the cards, each card would have a border color corresponding to the player's team.  I like the backs too - very clean, with complete career statistics as has always been the norm with Topps flagship sets.

Finally, it's a promising sign of things to come that three of my top four sets over the past 10 years are all recent releases.  With 2014 dropping off the list, here's a look at my updated rankings:

Best Five:  2024, 2015, 2023, 2022, 2019

Game 13 - Phils Off to Worst Start Since 2015

2015 Topps Heritage #411
Reds 6
, Phillies 2
Game 13 - Thursday Night, April 13th in Cincinnati
Record - 4-9, Tied for 4th Place, 5 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies once again couldn't solve Reds' starting pitcher Nick Lodolo, dropping this series opener by a score of 6-2.

What It Means:  After sitting through our son Doug's high school baseball game, which went nearly three and a half hours, I wasn't in the mood to watch the Phillies lose another game to the Reds.  This game came and went in the background as we recuperating from another long day.

What Happened:  The Phillies got to Lodolo for two runs when Nick Castellanos singled in the first and Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run in the fifth.  The offense was just 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.  Bailey Falter was tagged for five Reds runs in his 4+ innings of work, giving up eight hits.

Featured Card:  The 2015 Phillies also had a 4-9 record after 13 games, and manager Ryne Sandberg would decide he'd had enough in late June, quitting his post.  The team, led by interim manager Pete Mackanin for the rest of the season, would finish with a 63-99 record, the most losses since the club also lost 99 games in 1969.  The 2023 Phillies, at least on paper, are a lot better than the 2015 Phillies, and I optimistically believe this will not be a 99 loss season.

The Tradition Continues! - 2023 First Phillie Winner

I surprised myself last week by deciding to buy a hobby box of Topps Series One, as I'm still riding the high of the Phillies being in the World Series and this is the first flagship set design in several years I really like.  As much as I enjoyed the 2022 Topps design, it was almost too plain for me and this year's design will definitely not be accused of that.  There's a lot going on here.

I appreciate that Topps recognizes a somewhat under appreciated tradition of having two photos - one action, one portrait - on the front of its flagship cards every 20 years in years ending in -3.  This started in 1963, came back in 1983, kept the tradition going in 2003 and makes its triumphant return in 2023.  Well done, Topps.  While I expect the 2043 Topps baseball cards to just be holograms we launch from our tricorders, hopefully the two photos on the front return for a fifth time in the sequence.

Since I've been opening packs of Topps flagship cards, we've had a family tradition of seeking the First Phillie of the year.  My Dad and I started the tradition in the early 1980s, I carried it through, some years by myself, through the early 2000s, and the practice has continued with my wife and sons since then.  On late Friday afternoon, not soon after the box had been delivered to the door, we selected our packs and commenced the search for the First Phillie of 2023.  There was some controversy this year as Doug pulled a league leaders card featuring Kyle Schwarber seconds before I found this Aaron Nola card in my first pack.  Ben quickly followed with the J.T. Realmuto card in his first pack.  Consulting the hallowed family First Phillie bylaws, I'm awarding First Phillie honors this year to myself, as the league leaders card doesn't quite count.

Yes, the fronts of these cards are busy.  Yes, there are a few too many design elements crammed on the bottom of the cards.  But I like them, and these seem to me what baseball cards should look like in the year 2023.  Our box had amazing collation, as we didn't have any doubles and we were just 14 cards short of a complete 330-card first series set.  There seemed to be way fewer inserts and parallels than in prior years, and I was completely fine with that.  My one continued gripe with Topps flagship is that I wish the checklist grouped subsets together.  League leaders and the combo card/checklists should be grouped sequentially and not dropped in randomly throughout the checklist.

Revisiting a ranking of Topps flagship sets from the past 10 years, the 2023 Topps set, at least for now, finishes near the top.  I think I could flip flop the 2022 and 2019 designs in these rankings too:

Best Five:  2015, 2023, 2022, 2019, 2016
Bottom Five:  2018, 2014, 2021, 2017, 2020
