2nd Annual Lakewood BlueClaws Outing

2014 Brandt Lakewood
BlueClaws #5
Cardinals 6, Phillies 5 (12 Innings)
Game 129 - Saturday Night, August 23rd in Philadelphia
Record - 57-72, 5th Place, 17 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils fell in extra innings to the Cardinals, 6-5, after Marlon Byrd's big two-run single in the eighth tied up the game.

What It Means:  It means these losses are getting increasingly frustrating, and at least two Phillies (starting pitcher David Buchanan and left fielder Domonic Brown) were critical of manager Ryne Sandberg following the ballgame after both players deemed they were removed from the game prematurely.

What Happened:  Brown botched a couple of balls badly in the sixth, ultimately leading to three runs.  Buchanan was chased after five having thrown 90 pitches and allowed two runs on eight hits.  Daniel Descalso scored the Cardinals winning run in the 12th after Ken Giles began the inning by walking him.  Descalso came in to score on a Matt Carpenter sacrifice fly.

2014 Brandt Lakewood BlueClaws #3, #29, #31 and #4
Featured Cards/Field Report:  We missed the bulk of this game as we were taking in our second ever BlueClaws game in Lakewood, New Jersey.  The BlueClaws are the Phillies Low A team playing in the South Atlantic League.  We were once again able to get first row tickets right behind the BlueClaws bullpen, and my oldest son Doug spent the bulk of the hour leading up to the game tracking down autographs.

He got autographs from BlueClaws home run leader (and Phillies top prospect) Dylan Cozens along with catcher Willians Astudillo.  He also got autographs from former big leaguers Gregg Legg and Les Lancaster, both of whom were ejected in this game for arguing balls and strikes.

Our youngest son Ben was the recipient of a baseball when BlueClaws starting pitcher Ranfi Casimiro finished his pre-game warm-up, walked over to Ben and handed him his ball.  I wanted to include Casimiro's card in this post because his generosity was such an awesome gesture.  There were a ton of kids seeking autographs (and demanding baseballs) in our section and Casimiro made it a point to walk over to the youngest, quietest kid and hand him a ball.  Ben went to bed clutching both the baseball and his new BlueClaws giant foam finger.

It was a great night of baseball along with a fun night for our family, and we'll be back for another game (or two) in 2015.

2008 Chachi #36 Interim Coaches

To wrap up my series of posts on recent Phillies coaches, I needed a catch-all post to document those men who held official coaching positions outside the normal coaching positions.  According to the Phillies Yearbooks and Media Guides back to 1970, these are those "other" guys:

Infield Coach
Bobby Wine 1972 - Wine would go on to serve as the first base coach beginning in 1973
Tony Taylor 1977-1978 - Taylor would move to the first base coach's box in 1979

Catching Coach
Mick Billmeyer 2004-2008 - Billmeyer became the team's bullpen coach in 2009

Assistant Hitting Coach
Wally Joyner 2013

There was also a Chachi card I wanted to feature, showing the team's four interim coaches from the wonderful 2008 season.  These guys aren't listed on the official coach's roster within the team's Media Guide, but they definitely served time with the team during the 2008 season.

Roly de Armas' name came up within the post I did on the team's bullpen coaches, and you should check out the comments to that post for further reading as to why he was with the club in 2008.  Former Phillie Jerry Martin served as the club's interim first base coach early in the year while regular coach Davey Lopes recovered from prostate cancer surgery.

Finally, both Greg Legg and Doug Mansolino spent time with the club when regular bench coach Jimy Williams left the club to tend to personal matters.  These guys don't appear on any official Phillies lists as being a part of the 2008 club, and if not for this post and their Chachi card, this pertinent knowledge* could have been lost in the sands of time.

*At least to maybe a dozen of us.

1987 Phillies - No Missing Links

1987 Fleer Update #U-27, 1987 Donruss Opening Day #155, 1987 O-Pee-Chee #135 and 1988 Donruss #604
Thanks entirely to the 1987 Tastykake Phillies set, I've found another season in which every player who suited up for the Phillies received at least one Phillies baseball card.  I've put together posts covering 1980 to 1987, and then 1990 to 2000, and that's something that can be said for only three seasons in that range - 1985, 1987 and 1993.

3 Cards or More
35 Players

I'm going to include Mike Easler in this first category.  Easler only played 33 games with the Phillies before he was traded back to the New York Yankees in early June.  His 1987 Donruss Opening Day card is the sole standard sized card to feature Easler in a Phillies uniform, and he also appears in the 1987 Tastykake Phillies set.  The card that pushes him into this category, in my opinion, is his 1987 O-Pee-Chee card.  The card shows Easler in a Yankees uniform but bears a Phillies logo and the little "Now with Phillies" legend on the front of the card.

Ken Dowell (15 games in 1987) - 1987 Fleer Update #U-27 and 1987 Tastykake Phillies #37
Ken Jackson (8 games in 1987) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies #44 (with Francisco Melendez) and 1987 Tastykake Phillies #51
Tom Newell (2 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #50 and 1988 Donruss #604

I was always excited to receive new cards of Mike Schmidt or even Von Hayes during the mid to late '80s.  But what really got me excited is when the Ken Dowell's of the world appeared in a major card release like Fleer Update.  Dowell's entire Phillies career spanned 15 games between June 24th and July 19th, and that was good enough for the fine folks at Fleer to decide to give the light-hitting shortstop a card in their update set.  Dowell was released by the Phils following the 1987 season and spent three seasons in the Mets and Braves organizations before hanging up his spikes.

Jackson was rewarded for his strong season at Double-A Reading with a September call-up, and he made his Major League debut on September 12th.  In 8 games, Jackson hit .250 (4 for 16) with two doubles.  He spent eight seasons toiling in the minors for the Phils before wrapping up his professional career in 1989 in the Rangers' organization.

If Dowell's inclusion in the 1987 Fleer Update set is curious, then Newell's inclusion in the 1988 Donruss set is flat out crazy mysterious.  Also a September call-up, Newell appeared in two games in which he accumulated one inning pitched and four earned runs for a career ERA of 36.00.  He left the Phillies organization following the 1988 season, missed the 1989 season, and played the next two seasons within the Yankees' organization.  But at least he's forever immortalized within the 1988 Donruss set.

1987 ProCards Maine Guides #16, #9, #2 and #4
1 Card
Greg Jelks (10 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #45
Greg Legg (11 games in 1986 and 3 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #11
Doug Bair (11 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #58
Joe Cowley (5 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #39

Jelks, who was called up to the Phillies in late August, appeared in 10 games for the Phillies at third base, first base and left field.  He hit .091 (1 for 11) and spent the entire 1988 season back with Triple-A Maine.  According to his Baseball Reference page, Jelks was still playing professional baseball as late as the 2001 season.

I covered Legg in depth with the 1986 Phillies Missing Links post.  Bair pitched in 11 forgettable games for the Phillies toward the tail-end of his 15-year career.  After his short time in Philadelphia, Bair would actually enjoy one of his better seasons with the 1989 Pirates when he posted a 2.27 ERA over 44 relief appearances.

And what to say about Cowley?  Cowley was acquired from the White Sox in late March 1987 for outfielder Gary Redus.  He was supposed to stabilize the rotation, but instead ended up going 0-4 over 5 appearances with a 15.43 ERA.  He pitched in 13 more games for Triple-A Maine, but after going 3-9 with a 7.86 ERA, his Phillies and his Major League Baseball careers were over.  Neither Topps nor Fleer deemed him worthy enough for inclusion within their update sets.

1986 Phillies - The Missing Links

1986 Tastykake Phillies #35 and 1987 Tastykake Phillies #11
I'm slowly making my way through the 1980s in this series of posts, detailing those unfortunate former Phillies with little to no cardboard representation, and then I'll tackle the 2000s.  And for those of you wondering if the Topps Phillies post will continue - they will.  It's just that I've had less free time to blog what with my new job (which is fantastic so far), my son's t-ball games and just general spring/summer fever.

3 Cards or More
37 Players

Randy Lerch's Major League swan song came in the form of four forgettable games with the 1986 Phillies.  In 8 innings, Lerch compiled a 7.88 ERA before earning his release in late June.  Lerch had a number of Phillies cards from his first stint with the club, but only one card - from the 1986 Tastykake Phillies set - commemorating his short second stint with the Phils.

2 Cards
Francisco Melendez (30 games in 1984 and 1986) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies and 1986 Tastykake Phillies
Rocky Childress (16 games in 1985 and 2 games in 1986) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies and 1986 Tastykake Phillies

I featured Melendez with the 1984 Missing Links post and Childress was featured within the 1986 Missing Links post, so there's no new ground to cover here.  Even though both players received two Phillies cards, the photos used for both remained the same in the 1985 and 1986 Tastykake Phillies sets.

1 Card
Greg Legg (11 games in 1986 and 3 games in 1987) - 1987 Tastykake Phillies #11

Legg has been a fixture in the Phillies organization for 31 years.  Legg was drafted by the Phillies in 1982 and he climbed through the minor league ranks before finally getting the call to the Majors in 1986.  His time with the Phillies was short-lived as he appeared in only 14 games throughout the 1986 and 1987 seasons.  He finished his big league career with a .409 (9 for 22) average.

Legg continued playing with the team's Triple-A affiliate through the 1994 season before retiring and permanently joining the minor league coaching ranks.  He has filled in briefly as an interim coach at the Major League level, with his most recent appearance coming during the team's 2008 championship season.  He's now a coach for Mickey Morandini's Low-A Lakewood BlueClaws.

Because of his longevity within the Phillies family and my penchant for collecting Phillies minor league cards, I'm the proud owner of 27 different Legg cards dating back to 1987.

0 Cards

Tom Gorman (8 games in 1986)
1986 ProCards Portland Beavers #1 and #7
Jeff Bittiger (3 games in 1986)

Bittiger made his Major League debut in September 1986 and he appeared in just three games with the Phillies - all as a starting pitcher.  The club released him in December 1986 and he'd go on to appear in parts of three seasons with the Twins and White Sox.

Gorman's time with the Phillies was a disaster, as the veteran southpaw appeared in 8 games with the Phils in late July and early August.  He was shipped down to the minors due to his 7.71 ERA in those 8 games and the Phillies released him following the season.  Gorman is probably best known to Phillies fans as the unfortunate Mets pitcher who was on the wrong end of a 26-7 thrashing courtesy of Von Hayes and several others back on June 11, 1985.  I covered the game and the resulting card back in a old Scrapbook Sunday post.

1987 Topps Phillies - Missing Links

There are only 11 players who suited up for the Phillies in 1987 who did not appear as Phillies in either the 792-card base Topps set or the 132-card traded set.  Some of the cards below have been featured on the blog before, but presented here is the entire 11-card "missing links" Phillies team set.

All of the photos featured on these cards are taken from the team's 1987 Tastykake set.

1986 Topps Phillies - Missing Links

There are 16 players who appeared with the Phillies in 1986 who didn't make it into either the Topps base set or the traded series so I've made 1986 Topps cards for all 16.  As far as I know, neither Jeff Bittinger or Tom Gorman ever had Phillies cards - either mainstream or in the team-issued Tastykake sets - and if and when I ever have the free time to take a crash course in graphic design, I'm going to go back and fix their cards.

Most of the pictures I used for these cards are from the 1986 or 1987 Tastykake Phillies sets or from the 1986 Phillies Yearbook.
