Bakewell Winter Warmer DBA Tournament 2023

It was our pleasure to sponsor the lads at Bakewell for their Winter Warmer tournament of DBA. They had a fine turn out and we provided 15mm miniatures as prizes for the winners. Alternative Armies is happy to consider any event for sponsorship and we have resources for several a month if desired. See below for Simon's account of the event and if you are into DBA and its sister systems our historical ranges are well suited to this role.

See the Isarus 15mm Ancient and Dark Age as well as the Medus Medieval Range and the mighty 15mm Renaissance 16th Century range. Over to you Simon!

The theme was “Run for the Hills!”. All armies had to have a home terrain of “Hilly” and the usual terrain placement rules were replaced by a house rule that made sure there were lots of difficult hills to contend with. Players used their own armies on odd rounds and opponent’s on even rounds. There were six rounds in total.

Tournament rankings and armies brought were as follows:

1 Stephen Finn Cilician Armenian IV/2
2 Mark Skelton Mapuche IV/84a
3 Pete Duckworth Samurai IV/59a
4 Richard Pulley South Welsh III/19c
5 Ken Gordon Guti Revolt I/46
6 Phil Johnson Lydian I/50
7 Tom Whitehead Thracian I/48
8 Colin O’Shea Cilician Armenian IV/2
9 Andy Wheeldon Celtiberian II/39
10 Simon Wilson Dacian II/52
11 Keith Murphy Samurai IV/59a
12 Mark Johnson Dacian II/52
13 Paul Murgatroyd Illyrian I/47
14 Robert Rush Guti Revolt.1/46
15 Baldie Paionian I/63
16 Neil Mason Guti Revolt 1/46
17 John Saunders Early Japanese Yahoi 1/64a
18 Stevie Andrews Dacians II/52

Stephen was overall winner and took home the prize of several packs of 15mm Renaissance figures kindly donated by Alternative Armies. Details of other DBA Tournaments can be found HERE on Fanaticus.

Tabletop Fun June 2022

Across the world and the internet tabletop gamers, collectors, painters and players show off their miniatures and models bought from us or from our stockists such as Noble Knight Games. While the vast majority of these pass us by sometimes a kindly soul will show us their hobby results. Click on each picture on our blog to make it larger.

In this round up are six such results ranging from 15mm Historicals to 15mm Science Fiction, to The Ion Age as well as Flintloque and 28mm Fantasy. Where possible names and links have been provided and in each case a link to the website is present. Enjoy!

Tim Cook's Banneret of the Fleet! Tim painted up this 28mm Ion Age Miniature (IA002 in IB1 Retained Knights pack) as a Varlet Standard for his collection. He took several attempts at it but told us that he is happy with the effects and the basing he achieved. We agree!

The Failed Apprentice painted by Heroic Miniatures (see them on Instagram) a one piece miniature CA1-05 from The Wizard's Progress pack. Painted in a night time dead flesh scheme using Vallejo colours to be a Necromancer's aide perhaps. He gives more details on his account. But yuck! That really works.

The gallant South Mordor Regiment by Dances with Gnomes (see him on Instagram) his Slaughterloo Orc Line Unit using a photo editing program. One of the more famous regiments in the Army of Albion in a fierce battle with Armorican Elves and Diberian Werewolves. Featuring a scratch built Sergeant Obidiah speaking into his shako you can have your own unit with 54503 Orc Line including an officer and colour party.

Cai-Z popped up on the mighty 15mm Science Fiction group on Facebook and kindly permitted the use of this picture from his growing collection. HOF155 Dominator Sphere on the attack amid a lovely looking landscape. All those limbs will give anyone a hard time in combat!

Wargrunt Art (find them on Facebook) recently increased their 15mm historical forces with elements of Visigoths taken from our Isarus Dark Age Goths range. Lovely work on these and we often do not see these painted up. We hear he is now working on a Hun Army too.

This just in by Tony Aguilar for his DBA Army of the Konstantinian Byzantine list two stands of mounted Norman Knights. Lovely stuff and restored Tabletop Games 15mm range you can see in the Israrus pages of the website. Tony has added artillery and infantry to his army and it is looking very strong.

Thank you for your time!

Bakewell DBA Tournament 2022 prizes from Alternative Armies

It was our pleasure to sponsor with prizes the resumed annual DBA tournament held by the Bakewell Club in England.  Our thanks to Simon for the following account and photos.  If you are interested in 15mm Dark Age miniatures see the website (Blemye were the prizes from us) and go to the Fanaticus Boards if you are keen on knowing more.  Over to you Simon!

Eighteen players turned up for the Bakewell Blinded by the Lights tournament yesterday and it was also good to see some new faces in Bakewell, particularly those who had travelled a long way such as from Kent and Worcester.  The above photo is from the tournament in progress and the other is winner of the grand prize Pete Duckworth giving thumbs up and that is me on the right! Congratulations to winner Pete Duckworth who went away with some Blemye 15mm figure packs kindly provided by Gavin at Alternative Armies. Thanks for your sponsorship.

Very close runners up were Mark Johnson and Rob Rush in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

The Blind General rule was in play, whereby your opponent threw your PIPS dice and didn't let you know how many you had until you ran out. There was also a tournament requirement that only two elements in an army could have base combat factors of 4 or more and so there were some interesting armies on the tables.

Out of the 54 games, 47 were win/lose, 5 were winning draws and 2 were level draws.

Rankings:

1.  Pete Duckworth        III/55   Early Samurai

2.  Mark Johnson           III/70  Tuerag

3.  Rob Rush                 IV/42  Islamic Persian

6.  Neil Alexander          II/49  Anatolian Turkoman

8.  Arnaud Marmier        III/55 Early Samurai

9.  Colin Alcock              II/57  Later Moorish

10. Tom Whitehead        III/29  Thematic Byzantine

11. Martin Smith            I/35b  Phoenician
