Army of Pudigrochumsberg free booklet to download for Flintloque and Slaughterloo

“A blackened and burned land is all that remains of the once thriving kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg the victims of the Ostarian Emperor Klaffenhund’s madness.  In an attempt to gain popularity during the Ferach Revolution the Emperor decided to test his newly uniformed in white and musket armed Dog soldiers against this prosperous nation.  The few ready corps of troops that the  Houndian King Bonio of Pudigrochumsberg could bring to battle were scooped up and binned after a few weeks of campaigning.  Klaffenhund the head of the Yapsburg dynasty would accept no surrender and ordered the sacking of every city in their land and sowed salt into the fields. King Bonio and several regiments escaped and sought refuge with the Elves becoming a small force sworn to destroy the Ostarians at any opportunity.  Some Pudigroan soldiers with  Finklesteiner assistance fight on in their  ravaged country in attempts to dislodge the Ostarians unfortunate enough to be assigned garrison duty in Pudigrochumsberg.” - The Ruined Kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg

28mm Fantasy Snowmen our last two new releases for 2018

“Failure and dismay and then fear came to Doctorov as experiments resulted in abominations or horror but little use. Then luck visited in the form of a minion forgetting to remove a bucket of water from the re-animator meant to wash away the offal of the previous subject. Attached to the wagon and given energy in the process the next dawn the water froze and then grew coalescing into a humanoid form bulking out into snow! With a scream from emerging teeth made of coal the creature came to unlife!”

Our last new releases for the year begin this December and a wish for a merry festive season to you from all of us here at Alternative Armies. Our festive range expands out of 15mm scale to now include 28mm scale too! We present to you two new codes of 28mm scale Snowmen! One with melee weapons and the other with black powder weapons. Preserovitch Colour Party and Mounted Cuirassier unit releases for Flintloque for April 2018

Alternative Armies is delighted to present all of our releases for April 2018 for Flintloque and Slaughterloo in the World of Valon.  New packs and units to expand the 5024 Escape the Dark Czar beginners box for the game as well as the much bigger Undead Army of the Dark Czar in 28mm scale. A three figure colour party to give more command poses to the core six Savant Zombies in the beginners box.  A full unit of twelve infantry using all these poses.  A full unit of the same Savant Zombies as mounted riders on skeletal horses.

You can now have Captain Preserovitch on foot as well as his full unit and that unit as cavalry. Sculpted by Sam Croes. Excellent!  Go HERE for them or read on.  March to War (free shipping and gifts and offers) is on until 16th April 2018 and for details read HERE.

“The wind whipped and pulled at the sodden and torn greatcoat around his cold shoulders.  Near frozen rain beat on his unblinking eyes but Captain Preserovitch did not feel it.  He no longer felt anything.  What he had been..if he had ever been anything other than a puppet of his masters...was gone.  Under him his horse stood perfectly still for it, like him, was no longer alive.  It's simple senses bound to his own by the same arcane means that gave him his unlife.  His Zombie troopers were spread out in a lone line; each of them just visible to the next.  They were a net which had been cast wide to catch those fleeing the Witchlands especially the Elvish lad who carried the golden eagle of Mordred.  Preserovitch knew that the band of mortals would have to come this way and that he sat across their path but this storm was making it hard to spot his prey.  They would have to pass and pass close to be spotted.  Their muskets would be useless after one shot in this weather so it would be cold steel for the kill.  The Cuirassiers waited....”
Extract from 'Rotten Spotters' solo scenario for Flintloque.

Spektrov Cuirassiers for Flintloque take to the frozen field!

We promised a full unit release for Flintloque and Slaughterloo this month and following up on the new Grand Howitzers and the Dead Rams we have for you the heavy hitters of the Dark Czar's Undead Army.  55517 Spektrov Curiassiers are here with re-mastered white metal riders and a new resin zombie horse as well as a reduced price. Also extra savings on taking a whole unit of ten.  Go HERE to see them or read on for more information and a look at this new horse.

“Powdery snow crunched under the iron shod hooves of his horse but he did not hear it.  The rough and heavy iron over his chest rubbed and dug into the cloth underneath but he did not feel it. Upon his head a steel helmet topped with frozen blood soaked hair ground against his neck and forehead but it was as if nothing were there to him.  All that echoed in his mind was a series of commands which had been with him since the pain...a musket ball...had pieced his heart.  They were fainter now and his eye sockets were empty but he still saw the mortals ahead.  He turned to the riders to his left and right and like them they leered back from bare bone skulls. What had he been?  It had mattered and now...now it was a whisper.  A rusted straight sword was in his hand and it was time to kill.”

55517 Spektrov Cuirassiers
Not encountered during the endless march towards Moskova by the Elves these riders are the heavy hitters of the Undead cavalry and for the deceased they are of an excellent quality. Carrying long straight swords and wearing a lot of iron armour these soulless killers can be found at every major battle, leaving the routine hunting of stragglers to the Zombiski Cossacks and others of less value. Unless they feel personal vengeance is merited. Savant Zombies acting alone the Cuirassiers wear loose grey and or white cloth breeches and shirts with black or polished metal cuirass and helmet with red horsehair crescent plume. Facings are red or green and metal work is gold. Zombie Horses have brown saddles and light blue horse blankets with a gold and red blanket roll. From 5026 Death in the Snow.

Optional Flintloque Rule: As they wear a Cuirass you may optionally add a +1 to the riders Steady rating against ranged fire only.

This code contains five different 28mm scale skeletal riders in armour with plume topped helmets as well as five resin horses.  The riders are an officer with sword raised, a sergeant with sword forward (separate arm), standard bearer with bat topped pole (separate top), musician with two kettle drums and arms raised, trooper with sword at the ready.  Horses come with a separate saddle roll plus one will have the kettle drums too.  Easy to assemble and sculpted by Steve Young (riders) and Sam Croes (horse) you can choose from a pack of five or a unit of ten or a single trooper booster.  There is a saving for the pack over the single and the unit over the pack.  You may also choose to purchase these miniatures painted and based ready for play from here in Scotland.  These miniatures come supplied with our resin cartouche cavalry bases.  Select your option on the page. 18.00GBP (was 24GBP) per pack of five. Go HERE.

Those of you who are long term collectors of our miniatures will recognise these skeletal riders as those of the Undead Curiassiers and you are correct; they are.  Let me tell you a bit more about what we are doing with the Curiassiers and the new horse too.

As you will know Alternative Armies has been converting many of the riding beasts used in Flintloque and Slaughterloo from white metal into resin. Dogman Horses, Orc Horses, Camels, Rhinos, Moose and others.  This was done for several reasons the one ones being a reducing in price to you the customer for the large units you like to collect due to this new medium.  Some other projects are on the go too and one of these was a new horse for the heavier Undead cavalry.  The first of these are the now Spektrov Cuirassiers which have had their price reduced overall with this new resin zombie horse over the original white metal one. This new horse has mounting places for accessories and comes with a saddle bag (you can mount this on the horse or on a rider or foot miniature too) and musicians get kettle drums.  This is shown in the picture above.  Steve's riders were re-mastered to fit the new horse and here we are.  I am sure you will agree that the new horse is really nice.  It can be used for Valon and for High Fantasy too which will occur in our future releases. It will feature again for personalities and for an expansion to 5024 Escape the Dark Czar...after all the Savant Zombies in the beginners box are dismounted cavalry.  More on this nearer the time.

Here is a picture of the Spektrov Curiassier musician next to General Saindoux and a Goblin private of the Al-Garvey Legion giving you the relative sizes of each with 30mm being the height from the bottom of the base to top of plume of the Goblin.  You can see all of these miniatures on our Begin in Flintloque page.  There are also free scenarios there to download.

This is our last release for Flintloque this month.  See you in March with more awesome for the best black powder fantasy tabletop games in the world as well as more free articles and content too.

Article 7 Looking at the bigger picture by Andy Jefcoate

The wind blows and the sleet falls in winter! The seventh in a series of linked Flintloque articles by Andy Jefcoate about his forays in the Witchlands and in Flintloque. If you want to catch up on the first to sixth articles where he got his starter set and then tried it out followed by a nail biter of a scenario and then get his Pug Dogs marching plus more Cavalry then you can read them on our blog HERE. In this article he expands his future horizon. With pictures of his own painted collection. Read on and enjoy! GBS

Looking at the Bigger Picture

My eventual plan is to play a game of 'Slaughterloo' set in the Witchlands. There, I've said it, even though I'm several years away at the rate I paint my figures! I enjoy playing Flintloque very much, particularly the narrative nature of the game, but as my forces grow I'm at the point where they are too big for a normal sized Flintloque game, so it's good to have a plan.

With this in mind I'm continuing to build my forces into armies. I started talking about this in my 4th article by consolidating some of my characters into units but this process has continued. The characters I add are mainly the ones that catch my eye and that I want to paint, but every army needs its basic rank and file troopers too.

The Ferach Army
With the Ferach force I already have a fair sized Finklestein Dogman infantry contingent with Captain Ludwig Schwarzenbach's 12 dog unit from the Witchlands Dogman (including Hulmutt Jucken), and then the 10 Pugglesberg Jagers plus Captain Wolfe that joined them later. Although these units will expand in time I felt that my Ferach force needed some more elves. At present there are only the 10 Carabiniers including Colonel Gelure, the 5 Witchlands Cavalrymen, and a handful of Elf Witchlands infantry including Ayers and Saindoux himself. I decided that the latter needed to be expanded into a regular infantry unit.

As I've said before, the Elf Witchlands line infantry are brilliant for my narrative as they have varying uniforms and are all wrapped up against the cold, perfect for an Army fleeing through the frozen wastes. Despite their different look, if you want to you can still tie them together as a unit by using a small pallet of colours across all the figures in that unit. I like to do this by using a lot of the blue, grey, red or yellow that I would use on regular Ferach Elf infantry with a few additional colours thrown in here and there.

As Hulmutt Jucken joined my Dogman Witchlands unit, Ayers has now joined my Witchlands Elf infantry as their standard bearer. I decided to make them into an initial unit of 10, so I bought 8 regular soldiers from pack 51508 Elf Line Infantry Witchlands. The only thing left was a unit leader so I also bought pack 51006 the 7th Command of the Garde. This pack contains four Elves on foot, an Officer of the Chassuers (Light Infantry), an Officer of the Ligne (Line Infantry), an Officer of the Garde (Line Infantry) and an Agent of the Revolutionary Council (Spy). This last figure can be purchased as 2 different versions with or without spectacles and the kind people at Alternative Armies will supply whichever version you prefer (I got both) if you ask them by email.

I now had a leader for my Elf unit in the form of the Officer of the Chassuers, and for now the others have joined Saindoux as a Command squad. Boell Umfrage has remained with Saindoux too, as his bodyguard.

The Dark Czar's force
My existing troops are great for a beginner as they consist of 14 Savant Zombie dismounted cavalry (including Preserovitch and his men plus 8 Zombiski Cossacks), 5 mounted Zombiski Cossacks, 11 Werewolf Licantzrop Jagers plus their Vampyre leader, then a further 2 Vampyres (1 mounted and 1 on foot) with a Liche. As the undead are all Savant Zombies you don't need to worry about brain freeze or the distance from the Liche.

However, I felt that this force was rather elite and has far too many leaders so would benefit from some regular Zombie Line Infantry as these should really form the bulk of this type of army. I decided to have an initial unit of 12 and as I already had a Vampyre and a Liche, I bought 10 regular zombie infantry figures from pack 55508

As I mentioned in my 4th article I had already painted a Vampyre from pack 55005 the Latrinislav Command pack who will be the leader of this unit. I have also now painted the other Vampyre and Liche from this set so I have a second command unit ready to go. I do enjoy painting Vampyres!

The continuing narrative
This is brutally simple as regular troopers continue to join both forces. The elves either manage to outdistance the pursuit and join the relative safety of Saindoux's growing force or they fail and join the Dark Czar's force as regular Zombies.....................

Scenarios
I'm at the point that I don't generally use all of my figures in a single game. This is a good thing. As I said earlier, I particularly like the narrative nature of Flintloque so I concentrate on what a small band of characters is doing at any one time. The result of those small actions then builds into the larger picture of the army itself and influences the plot of other scenarios. Although I decide what scenarios to play you can never truly know what the result will be until those dice start rolling! To be honest I very rarely balance the points of the two forces in a scenario, it is purely about the story which I find to be less clinical and more fun. After a while you get to know what kind of characters work well either together or against one another.

In line with the continuing narrative above, a good scenario is to try to get a small force of Ferach soldiers to the safety of Saindoux's force by passing a piquet line of the Dark Czars forces. For this I like to use my newly painted zombie unit of 12 figures spread out in a line east to west across the middle of a 4' x 4' table (but still within command range of the Liche). A small unit of Ferach troops have to enter the table on the northern edge opposite the piquet line and pass them to escape off of the southern table edge. It is then all about how difficult you want it to be, for example 2 Elf soldiers will find that they are having a very bad day, but a unit of 10 shouldn't have too much trouble getting most of their number to safety.

What's next
I have a huge wish list of Flintloque figures and there are also some great new releases. It's time to place another order and I'll let you know how I get on in my next article.

Thank you for reading.

This set contains 28mm white metal miniatures including an officer with Sword and Pistol, Musician with Drum, Sergeant with Pike, Standard Bearer and four different poses of Dogmen all with muskets.  Dwarf sized 'Pug' type Dogmen standing around 23mm tall.  A small dutchy within the Empire of Ostaria and in the service of the mad Emperor Klaffenhund.  Or you can use them to portray any one of the multitude of tiny stattes in the Confederation of Finklestein.  You can choose from a skirmish pack of ten miniatures (all eight poses with two additional random trooper poses), a unit of twenty miniatures (the skirmish pack with ten additional mixed trooper poses and a small saving) and single miniature choice booster for additional trooper poses.  Sculpted by Rob Alderman. We have a free Uniformation article for you to download from our Dropbox by clicking HERE.  Enjoy the read and then use the given statistics to add the Von Mohlblume to your games.  Thanks!
