Man, or at least early man, is immune to everything that isn't manmade in some capacity, short of a natural death. Change my mind.

it's said that pigs are smarter than dogs, but how affactionate are they compared to dogs? do they care about you, greet you when you're home, and cuddle with you?
>>
>>5100049
Spoilers: they aren’t smarter than dogs. the two species have brains of equal capability, size, and neurological complexity tuned to excel in different sets of tasks.

so you expect a straight brain upgrade from a dog but what you get is an animal that is retarded in all new ways just so it can be better at finding hidden food using its snout to destroy things
>>
>>5100049
They bond with their owners but it mostly amounts to them following you around all the time. I had a coworker with a potbelly pig and while I enjoyed playing with it he made it sound like keeping a potty trained goat in your house. When no one was home to watch it he had to keep it in his basement so it wouldn't eat the house.
>>
>>5100049
Honestly if you want something that follows you around everywhere and is much muchhhh smarter than a dog, just buy a parrot, even a simple green cheek conure completely ratio them, but you have to be prepared for philological damages you could make them endure if you treat them badly

Some pigs have dog like levels of personality. Out of a group of 10 that I've had for almost 2 years now as breeding stock they each sort of have their own personalities, and a couple are weirdly conscious. The most human forward/social ones are basically like constantly hungry and very strong non biddable dogs. They come up to me for scratches and will happily flop over for belly scratches, some know their name and will run over when called, get excited when I'm around, etc. Super social animals that can be very sensitive even though their pain tolerance is obscenely high. They clearly show empathy for one another and form bonds with each other as a group, and with other non pig animals. Really cool animals that are a pain in the ass to keep because of how smart and tenacious they are. Difficult to keep them inside fences..

I worked at a tractor supply for a while, nearly every week I'd be talking to someone come in to replace their birds because some predator got them. One lady had a bear bust into her coop and ate 29 out of 30 birds, the lone survivor was wedged up in a corner of the roof with half its feathers missing.

I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was myself. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. england is and was a silly place sometimes, victorian england doubly so

I used to live in a tiny village where they trained priests, and it had a 900 year old village church (separate to the priest training place)
in that church was a stone that said something like
IN MEMORIAM
FATHER JOHN OLDNDEAD
WHO DIED HERE ON SUNDAY SEPTEBRUARY 43TH
WHILE LEADING SUNDAY PRAYERS
and I always pictured him just nodding off mid sentence in a particularly boring sermon and never waking up

theres nothing humans love more than an excuse to hurt or kill something, doesnt matter if its an animal or a human.
theres nothing hunters and anglers love more than getting a culling license.
and you see the same at protest, as soon as a group of people are given the opportunity to lynch someone for having a different opinion or even just saying the wrong thing they take it with childlike glee.

What agricultural animals make the best house pet?

Pigs are the only barnyard animals that can be housetrained and bred small enough to live in your home. They would be the best option unless you count herding dogs or barnyard cats as agricultural animals.

Rabbits can do this as well.

You wouldn't want a boar in the house. You'd probably want to castrate if your only option was a male pig, but just like dogs you need to wait or they'll get fucked up joints way too early.

Sad mainly because I get worried the animal may be a bit confused during the process, but hopefully it wasn't too alarming for him. Also the fact he had good humans for support made his last days more comfortable. Heck if I get lousy health problems like he did, that's exactly the way I'd like to deal with it.

Who comes up with this shit?
9 replies omitted. Click here to view.

its venom is defensive, so it needs it to protect from predators. At some point it evolved mild venom to stop a predator. Then that predator evolved immunity to the venom. Then the octopus evolved stronger venom and the predator evolved immunity to that. This keeps happening until you get some crazy venom that kills anything, and you have some predator that still eats it anyways.

that's what happened with newts and garter snakes. Some newts have venom that will easily kill a human but garter snakes are immune and eat them anyways.

not sure what preyed on blue rings, it's possible whatever predator caused them to become so venomous is now extinct.
