It seems my sweet American Tree Sparrow couple is really
a Chipping Sparrow couple! I was looking up the difference
in markings for the female and discovered that the black
eye band and beak and light grey breast distinguish
them from the Tree Sparrows (who have brown
eye bands, yellow beaks and speckled breasts).
So, now we all know!
