Grift/Dolt land/Nordvis Produktion/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Sweden's  solo  project  Grift  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  staying  away  from  the  black  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  focusing  more  on  the  folk  music  style  of  current  material  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2023  album  "Dolt  land"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  folk  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  while  acoustic  guitars  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  album.  Synths  can  also b e  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  sine  the  vocals  also  being  done  in  a  more  clean  neo-folk  style  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

 At  times  the  music  also  adds  in  some  medieval  touches  while t he  more  aggressive  vocals  are  more  closer  to  a  black  metal  style  when  they  are  introduced  into  the  music.  When  percussion  is  utilized  they  also  add  in  more  tribal  and  shamanistic  touches  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  as  well  as  one  song  also  introducing  whispers  into  the  music. 

  On  this  recording  Grift  expands  on t he  forest  folk  music  style  he  has  established  on  current  releases  as  well  as  adding  in  some  touches  of  black  metal  to  the  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in Swedish  and  cover  hu=mankind's  bond  with  nature.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grift  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  neo-folk,  you  should  check  iut  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  'Silverne  stig"  and  "Gyllene  sal".  8  out  of  10.

Grift/Vilsna andars utmark/Nordvis Produktion/2022 EP Review

 

  Sweden's  solo  project  Grift  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  moving  awayt  from  atmospheric  black  metal  and  going  for  more  of  a  neo  folk  style  that  he  has  introduced  on  a  previous  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2022  ep  "Vilsna  andars  utmark"  which  will b e  released  in  November  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Folk  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  which  also  use  a  mixture  of  full  chords  and  finger  picking  start  off  the  ep.  Vocals  are  all  done  in  a  clean  style  while  percussion  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  black  metal  screams  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  melancholic  atmosphere  and  the  music  also  adds  in  a  more  modern  neo-folk  touch  at  times.

  On  this  recording  Grift  returns  back  to  the  neo-folk  style  he  introduced  on  a  previous  ep  showing  he  has  more  to  offer  this  genre  with  a  couple  of  songs.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  mankind's  bond  with  nature.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grift  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  neo-folk,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Furukatedralen".  8  out  of  10.

Grift/Budet/Nordvis Produktion/2020 Full Length Review

  Sweden's  Grift  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  him  going  into  more  of  a folk  music  inspired  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2020  album  "Buder"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Field  recordings  start  off  the  album  while  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  introduces  melancholic  and  depressive  sounding  black  emtal screams  onto  the  recording.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  thy  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  album. Acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  songs  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and   epic  in  length  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  At  times  the  album  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  and  spoken  word  parts  also  make  a  return  as  the  album  recording  progresses,  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  man;s  insignificance  and  death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grift  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  folk  inspired  atmospheric  and  melancholic  black  metal,  you  should check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Skimmertid"  and  "Vita  arkiv".  8  out  of  10.

  Sweden's solo  project  Grift  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  and  on  this  release  moves  away  from  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  to  focus  more  on  a  neo-folk  sound  and  this is  a  review  of  his  2018  ep  "Vilsna  Andars  Boning"  which  was  released  by  Nordvis.

  Folk  instruments  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  acoustic  guitars  a  few  seconds  later  and  they  also  use  both  finger  picking  and  full  chords  along  with  some  percussion's  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  vocals  are  all  done  in  a  clean  style  and  both  of  these  songs  are  folk  versions  of  previous  black  metal  tracks  he  has  recorded  and  the  second  track is  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  brings  in  a  few  seconds  of  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  On  this  recording  Grift  takes  a  couple  of  songs  off  his  previous  release  and  does  them  in  an  acoustic  neo-folk  direction  and  strips  away the  heavy  instruments  and  harsh  vocals,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  dreams,  heritage  and  a  forgotten  ancient  past.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grift  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  neo-folk,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Dararnas  massiv".  8  out  of  10.

Grift/Arvet/Nordvis Produktion/2017 CD Review

  Sweden's  solo  project  Grift  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  from  previous  recordings  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2017  album  "Arvet"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Nordvis  Produktion.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album   and  they  also  add  in  a  touch  of  folk  music  along  with  some  stringed  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  and  whispers  are  also  used  briefly  and  after  awhile  tortured  black  metal  vocals  start  to  make  their  presence  known  and  they  also  have  a  very  depressive  and  melancholic  edge  at  times.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  a  more  raw  black  metal  feeling  while t he  solos  and  leads  stick  to  a  more  modern  and  melodic  atmospheric  style  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Acoustic  guitars  and  stringed  instruments  are  used  on  the  other  tracks  as  well  while  a  couple  of  the  songs  are  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  a  brief  use  of  field  recordings,  nature  sounds  and  soundscapes  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  most  of  the  songs  also  sound  different  from  each  other  and  one  track  also  brings  in  a  small  amount  of  spoken  word  parts.

  Grift  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  that  was  established  on  previous  releases  while  also  mixing  in  a  great amount  of  folk  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  Man's  Insignificance,  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Grift  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  with  a  touch  of  folk,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Flyktfast"  and  "Utdoingsbygd".  8  out  of  10.

Drudkh/Grift/Betrayed By The Son/Hagringar/Nordvis Produktion/2016 Split EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between Ukraine's  Drudkh  and  Sweden's  Grift  2  bands  that  have  had  albums  reviewed  before  by  this  zine  and  this  album  will  be  released  in  September  by  Nordvis  Produktion  and  is  called  "betrayed By  The  Sun/Hagriner"  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Drudkh  which  continues  the  atmospheric  and  epic  black  metal  sound  of  previous  recordings.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  that  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  while  you  can  also h ear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  black  metal  screams  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and both  of their  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  modern  atmospheric  elements  and  there  is  also  a  brif  use  of  melodic  chants,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Drudkh  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "His  Twenty  Fourth-Spring".

  Next  up  is  Grift  a  solo  project  that  also  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  water  sounds  and  after  a  few  seconds  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  his  side  of  the  recording  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  heavy  and  melodic  guitar  riffs  are  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  depressive  black  metal  vocals  and  both  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  more  of  a  modern  and  melodic  atmospheric  black  metal  style  while  also  mixing  the  acoustic  and  heavy  parts  together  at  times  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  folk  instruments  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and   blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the music  more  of  a  raw  edge  while  the  songs  stick  mostly  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover  a  mans  struggle  to  find  his  path  in  a  primitive  world.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grift  and  is  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Cirkeln".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  atmospheric  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Grift/Fyra elegier/Nordvis/2013 CD Review

  Grift  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  melancholic  form  of    black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Fyra  elegier"  which  was  released  by  Nordvis.

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  no  fast  playing  or  blast  beats  being  present on  this  recording,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  following  the  riffing  that  are  coming  out  of  the  guitars  and  on  one  of  the  songs  they  have  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  to  them,  as  for  the  violins  which are  only  utilized  on  the  first  song  they  bring  a  very  dark,  melancholic  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  atmospheric,  dark,  melancholic,  raw  and  primitive  sounding  along  with  a  good  amount  of  melody  being  thrown  into  the riffing  as  well  as  some  doom  metal  elements,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  atmospheric  and  melodic  sounding  black  metal  guitar  leads.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim sounding  black  metal  screams  with  a  brief  use of  spoken  word  parts,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Swedish  and  cover   mans  insignificance  and  everything  unimaginable  before  Death's  triumph  while  also  adding  poetic  feeling  to  the  song  writing,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive sounding  with  some  of  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Grift  are  a  very  great  sounding  dark,  atmospheric,  melancholic,  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dodens  dad"  and  "Bortgang".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
