Katavasia/Invoking The Spirit Of Doom/Iron Bonehead Productions/2021 EP Review

 

  Greece's  Katavasia  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  old  school  style  of  occult  black  metal  from  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Invoking  The  Spirit  Of  Doom"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Iron  Bonehead  Productions.

  A  very  heavy  and  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostyl  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  90's  era  Hellenic  influences.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  an old  school  style  along  wit  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments,  synths  can  also  be  heard  at  times.

  On  this  recording  Katavasia  remains  true  to  the  old  school  style  of  occult  black  metal  that  has  been  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Sacrilege,  Satanism  and  Magick  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Katavasia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Descending  To  Acheron".  8  out  of  10.

Katavasia/Magnus Venator/Floga/2020 CD Review

  Katavasia  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  that  consists  of  members  from  some  well  known  and  legendary  Greek  bands  that  plays  a  very  old  school  and  occult  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Magnus  Venator"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Floga.

  A  very  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  being  very heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  style.

 You  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  melody  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Synths  and  ethic  music  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  album, when  percussion  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  shamanistic  atmosphere,  one  of  the  later  tracks  is  also  an  instrumental  and  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Satanism,  Magick  and  Sacrilege  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Katavasia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  occult  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Daughters  Of  Darkness"  "Chthonic  Oracle"  and  "Babylon  (Sammu-Rawat)".  8  out  of  10.

Katavasia/Sacrilegious Testament/FLOGA Records/2015 CD Review

  Katavasia  are  a  band  from  Greece  which  has  members of  Varathron,  Aenaon,  Hail  Serpent  Noir,  Transcending  Bizarre,  Agnes  Vein,  while  the  last  2  tracks  have  members  Septic  Flesh,  Rotting  Christ,  and  Thou  Art  Lord  as  session  musicians  and  the  band  plays  a  very  old  school  and  atmospheric  form  of  occult  Greek  black  metal..

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  atmospheric  Greek  black  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  deep  grim  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  and  brings  back  a  lot  of  the  raw  aggression  of  that  time  frame.

  When  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  musical  direction  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  bass  guitars  are  utilized  as  a  lead  instruments  throughout  the  recording  and  on  some  of  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  blast  beats  are  utilized  at  times  and  there  are  also  a  few  tracks  that  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  a  couple  of  the  later  tracks  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing,  spoken  word  parts  and  elements  of  medieval  folk  music  while  the  later  songs  return  back  to  more  of  a  Greek  black  metal  style  while  some  parts do  use  a  few  seconds  of  acoustic  guitars.

  Katavasia  brings  back  the  early  90's  Greek  black  metal  sound  and  creates  an  album  that  is  very  old  school,  raw,  melodic  epic  and  occult,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  yet  powerful  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Left  Hand  Path  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Katavasia  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric,  occult  and  old  school  Greek  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cosmic  Nightmare:  "Visions  Of  The  Misty  Night"  and  "The  Chariot  Of  the  Emperor".  8  out  of  10.
