Svyatogor Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going with the band these days?

Answer: Now we are actively working on the fourth album material creation, thinking about the music, preparing the material for recording. The next album is promised to be enough philosophic. We were inspired by the historical Events and Personalities.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from the older releases?
Answer: Damn, I never could choose words trying to describe our music (laughing). But it is the fact that it differs from previous albums. I think that it is the definite step forward for us. In this album we as always were looking for ways of going out from the style frames, experimented with instruments and arrangements. It is the priceless experience.

3. What are the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?
Answer: I would call it “cynical, philosophic view”. This is the quintessence of our attitude to historical events and its modern interpretation. This is our reaction on “the puppet theatre”, which is called the “modern democratic society” in which the role is planned for us. Look around. Do you see what is happening in the world? The capitalistic aggressors invade unceremoniously to anything they want, leading exclusively by the resources and springboards capture purposes. Now even nobody invents “weighty reasons” to justify this aggression. Everything surrounding us indicates that the state with its corrupted authority, closing gaps in their pockets with pension and social payments of their citizens, starts up the self-destruction process. The question is when it will happen – after the next natural anomaly or after the first issuing ballistic rocket. The counting has started.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Answer: Svyatogor – is the powerful character of Slavonic mythology – the son of Rod, the  brother of Svarog. His image is covered with many legends. We see his image more widely, firstly it is the image of Power, Truth, Will. This image combines everything our songs are about. Besides, there is the great part of mysticism, connection with Space and Universe energy in Svyatogor image.

5. Has the band had any oppurtunities to do any live shows, if so what are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Answer: Yes, this month we had the concert in Ukraine, in spite of the close schedule of the new material work. As for “the best” I want to believe that the best performance is the next performance. And the practice shows that fortunately it is true – every next performance breaks the records of our own “TOP”. Speaking about “show” - we are the followers of “classical metal” material representation – “only clean metal”, without any masquerade and the supercomplex make-up. Sometimes we perform without make- up at all.

6. What are some of the plans that the band has in store for 2012?
Answer: We have the material for the fourth and the fifth album. This year we plan to record the fourth one. Its release is going to take place in early 2013. For the fifth album the half of the material is also ready, at the end of the year we will arrange it.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of pagan/black metal, who have heard it so far?
Answer: The album «Doctor Veritas» can not be called pagan-black metal in its classical, “clean” appearance. But we did not have the purpose to do it so. It is the self-sufficient manuscript, without the need to be attached to the Pagan-Black Metal book. Its destination is to be some “hidden chapter”.

8. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Answer: We still seek the ways to widen Svyatogor borders. I am sure our next albums will be as original and extraordinary as the previous ones. Have patience and will find out soon.

9. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Answer: I am often asked with this question, and now I will not tell anything new. The great composers such as J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, E.H. Grieg, M. Mussorgsky, S. Prokofiev – it is the inexhaustible source of musical and creative inspiration for all times.

10. How would you describe your vies on Paganism and Occultism?
Answer: Firstly, we do not share anything common with the clownery, performed for the common people and stupid servants as so- called pseudo “paganism” and pseudo “occultism” as the endless amount of absurd societies and spiteful “magic”  teenagers playing with satanic  Christian mystic. The conceptions clearness of “paganism” and “occultism” lies over the Christian tales and myths. And I am not going to become like chatterers, opening my own truthful attitude to “paganism” and boast about my participation in “occultism”. It will stay in me.

11.Outside of music, what are some of your interests?
Answer: Women and sport!

12. Any final words or thoughts before wrap up this interview?
Answer: Look widely. Do not let yourself to become a fly in social nets. Be ready to attack first.

Svytogor are a band from Ukraine that plays an experimental form of pagan black metal with a death metal edge to it and this is a review of their 2012 album "Doctor Veritas" which was released by Svarga Music.

Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being thrown into the music at times, while the saxophones and when they are utilized they bring jazz and art rock influences to the music as well as some experimental and avant garde parts in addition there is some keyboards being used at times that bring an epic feeling to the music, as for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful tone with riffs that dominate throughout the recording.

Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast pagan/black metal riffs that are very raw and primitive at times but still utilize some dark sounding melodies and death and thrash metal influences in the heavier part of their riffing in addition there is a brief use of soft and clean playing being utilized on one song, while the lead guitars when they are utilized are very melodic sounding guitar solos and leads that are heavily influenced by traditional metal, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they use finger picking to ad more variety to the music.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep death metal growls being used at times as well as some spoken word parts in addition there are some whispered vocals, while the lyrics are written in Russian, Ukrainian, English and French with themes that cover dark, spiritual and Slavic Paganism themes, as for the production it has a very strong and powerful sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.

In my opinion Svytogor are a very great sounding experimental pagan/black metal band with a death metal edge and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band.
