With a vintage tractor auction, family raises nearly $500,000 for Mayo Clinic

When Michael Sullivan decided to raise money for Mayo Clinic by auctioning off a vintage John Deere tractor, he expected to raise between $25,000 and $30,000. Instead, he garnered nearly $500,000.

Sullivan, a 33 year-old Hamilton, Ill., resident, enlisted his family's auctioneering business to collect bidders for a 1972 John Deere tractor. The cause was personal: Sullivan credits Mayo Clinic for saving his life as he underwent treatment for a rare form of leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Dan Sullivan, Michael's father, quickly realized this auction would be unlike any they'd held in their 40 years of doing business. Before Dan — or one of his brothers — picked up the microphone on Aug. 22 to take the first bid on the tractor, the family had already raised $250,000 from donors.

Like usual, with the tractor on the block, the auctioneers rattled off prices in their typical cadence, and the John Deere sold to the highest bidder. Then came the twist: the winning bidder donated the tractor back to the Sullivans and committed to send the money to Mayo Clinic.

Stunned, the auctioneers restarted the process, bouncing back and forth to bidders as the tractor's price tag went higher.

A second bidder emerged victorious, offering up $100,000. However, but this person too returned the tractor to the family and donated the six-figure bid to Mayo Clinic.

Auctioneers were floored. But started a third round of bidding.

By the time the John Deere sold a third time, settling in with its final owners, the family had raised $406,000 for Mayo Clinic. That number has climbed near $500,000 as checks continue to come in.

Pittsburgh airport auctions lost and found items, including abandoned cars (thanks Gary!)

Lost and found items at Pittsburgh International Airport don’t get thrown out. Instead, they are sold for a good cause.

"Anything that was lost and found, the money that we get for that, we donate that to charity,” Pittsburgh International Airport Spokesperson Bob Kerlik told Fox News. Among the charities that will benefit are Circles of Greater Pittsburgh, The Lion’s Club, Pittsburgh Chapter and Global Links.

This year's auction had a historic turnout, with more 1,000 attendees. About 400 of them were registered bidders.

One of the biggest items left behind at the airport: cars. About a dozen vehicles abandoned at the airport were sold to the highest bidder.

Janie's Fund aims "to bring hope and healing for many of our country's most vulnerable girls who have suffered the trauma of abuse and neglect."

When “Janie’s Got a Gun” – which touched on the theme of child abuse – was released in 1989, Tyler was overwhelmed and inspired by the thousands of letters he received from his fans – fans who had experienced neglect and abuse themselves. It prompted him to launch Janie’s Fund – a program to support girls who have been abused and neglected, giving them the resources they need to heal and, as Tyler puts it, “the tools they need to get on in this crazy world that we’ve got.”

5 years after losing their dad, a Sheriff's Deputy, the sons tried to buy his patrol car at auction, but were outbid on the Charger, worth about 12 thou, when a farmer bid it up to 60 thou. Then he handed them the keys. The funds go to the police charity for surviving familes

Weld County Deputy Sam Brownlee was killed in the line of duty in 2010 after a police chase. The County Sheriff’s office auctioned off the his squad car on Wednesday to raise money for C.O.P.S, or Concerns of Police Survivors, an organization that helps survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Tanner had a plan going into the auction, having started a GoFundMe page for the car. But Tanner was quickly outbid and the car went to a local farmer, Steve Wells, for $60,000, even though the car’s Kelley Blue Book value was only $12,500.

Wells declined an interview with KMGH, saying he did not want to take away Tanner’s moment as he got behind the wheel of his dad’s car.

2 very expensive 60's Ferrari are going to auction. Normally, who cares, right? The money from these, though, is going to pay for Coast Guard Rescue boats

The auction of a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB and 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 will take place on 14 October 2015 at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambridge

Businessman Richard Colton, requested that money raised from the sale of his cars be used to build a new lifeboats for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the charity that saves lives at sea. It provides, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, it has saved more than 140,000 lives. More and more people are using beaches and the sea for leisure and RNLI crews and lifeguards are responding to an increased number of incidents.

Six out of every 10 lifeboat launches are only made possible because of gifts in wills, so they are vital to saving lives at sea.
