Burning House's Fanclubesque "Peach"

Most of Southampton band Burning House's songs at Bandcamp sound rather shoegazy, but their tags there also include the following: "power pop" and "powerpop." Their just-released juicy little number below proves they aren't kidding. Fans of Teenage Fanclub will most likely agree. So far, all of their songs at Bandcamp are available for name-your-price download, so get ye hence, an ye be willing/able.

We also very much like this Guided by Voices cover (originally authored neither by Mr. Pollard nor by Mr. Sprout, but by Mr. Doug Gillard).

And speaking of Mr. Gillard, we are very glad we bought this one several years ago.

Columbus' Connections Launch Weapons of Mass Seduction

We're posting this excellent lo-fi powerpop number in two formats: Bandcamp widget and YouTube vid, but please be advised: This video contains graphic depictions of full-frontal (and lateral) intimacy between fruits, in this case, two very ripe bananas. Initially it's just innocent spooning (for which, as you may have noticed, bananas are ideally structured). At that point you might be thinking, "Oh, pp, you're such a prude. I get more excited opening my cutlery drawer." Well, just you wait because at the 1:57 mark they peel and do the full Monty, and it leaves nothing--nothing--to the imagination (unless your reveries run to naughty necking nanners making the beast with two backs). So you've got options.

We've got a bit more to say below, but let's go ahead and "do it."

Yes, the quintet's from Ohio, both Columbus and Dayton, and you know what that means: a Guided by Voices connection!. They were at first signed to Robert Pollard's Rockathon label, and the lead Voice's bona (lo)fides are everywhere evident. (Today Connections are on the Anyway Records label.) Read more about it at this excellent Blurt post. In an earlier post of our own we guided your fingertips to connect with another's Fingerips to check out/maybe download the excellent "Mall Lights." Well, guess what: it's still excellent and it's still there!

Other Connections freebies are available here and here, and you can buy their recently released Midnight Run here and here. (For some reason, the Bandcamp widget contains no Buy option.) Click for Facebook connection.

Whole Lotta Helicopta

It was kind of hard to find much info on this Boston band, but AllMusic trots out the word "power-pop" (sic) and compares them to Fastbacks and the Replacements, so that's good.

Mind if we share a helicopter-themed song? Thanks.

And another one that's kind of different?

And OF COURSE, the very first downloadable we ever posted, almost nine longish years ago.

kk + tm cover The New Pornographers, Teenage Fanclub, The Soft Boys, The Zombies, Guided by Voices, The Who, et. al. . . .

Here are our faves from the second fabulous cover collection by Futureman Records' Keith Klingensmith and the TM Collective. They're all available for free download on a name-your-price basis. We know you know the artists they're covering, but we're sticking bandnames in there anyway. And don't worry: you'll find a shipload of great ones still awaiting your tender touch at the Bandcamp site.

Guided by Voices: Fats & Doughnut

from the forthcoming LP
Let's Go Eat the Factory
coming on iTunes 20 December
and in stores on 17 January

Yes, we know, we should have posted the above weeks ago, you've already gripped it elsewhere, etc., etc., but we just got access to another downloadable (see below) by the classic GbV lineup and hope you'll forgive us. Click here to hear and download songs from our previous GbV posts. "Everywhere With Helicopter" was the first mp3 we ever posted, icywtk. The nice live video that pleased a sometime friend is still here.

Sun Day: Guided by Voices, The Information, Bishop Allen, The Swear, Pernilla Andersson, Marit Bergman, Pia Fraus, Mahogany, Airiel

Pia Fraus and Herrs (vague feeling of mistranslation. . .)

Team Powerpopulist doesn’t always display creativity or logic in its rationale for posting particular songs in particular posts. Some of the fault owes to the filing system. True, it’s hard to blame something that doesn’t exist, but all of this is to say we’ve come across some songs we’d intended to post back in earlier days of the venture but somehow lost track of. There are at least ninety and nine more in similar situation, so we hope to rescue and post them, too.

A-Sides, Guided by Voices, dBs, Tullycraft, Baskervilles

I've got some up-to-date things to post but found these old friends while rummaging through the Powerpopulist workshop. Thanks to a certain someone for reminding me about the dBs number. Note added, Thursday, 3/29: In response to Gretchen's kind comment, I want to mention that both Baskervilles and Tullycraft offer a big bunch of mp3s at their bandsites. Just click on the band names below. At the Tullycraft site, click on the "MP3s" submenu. At the Baskervilles site, click on "MUSIC." In response to beyesn's comment, I'd mention you can also find some good extras at the Multimedia page of The dB's bandsite. I just now added a never-before released track to this post.

Around the Blogosphere

My Happymeter surged to 11 when I came across today's post at The Runout Groove. My new friend Jamie (he doesn't know me, but then neither do I) has posted eight songs from the Guided by Voices boxset Hardcore UFOs: Revelations, Epiphanies and Fast Food in the Western Hemisphere . Needless to say, GbV's b-sides would be most bands' a-sides. Jamie has tons of other great songs as well. I particularly liked "You Are the Teacher" by Kidderminster's Meg.

Speaking of GbV, check out Jared's posting of "Surgical Focus" over at 5 Acts. That same post has fine ones by The Aislers Set and Ride.

I really liked The Honeydrips' "(Lack of) Love Will Tear Us Apart," which you can find over at SKATTERBRAIN.

Guided by Voices

Even if these aren't absolutely recent and even if the fourth song was the first mp3 I ever posted at this blog and even if I've also posted the video of it, I somehow feel led to sing out again with one of my all-time favorite bands.

Curtain

One Spinal Cracker (allusively): What the world needs now is another song blogger like I need a hole in my head.

Jojo: I've got five, maybe seven. One or two more might be gear. Let it be.

Amen.

Let us dream.

Kiss This Guy

I had one of those loony Hendrixian experiences this past Wednesday. No, I didn’t kiss a guy, although I sometimes do.* “Tree-ee-ee-ees and leaves are lovely/See-ee-ee-eek it, find the co-o-ore....” “Wonderful!” I blissed. “Perfectly suits the time of year. Season’s mellow, life is good, sparrows bark not in the wood.” But niggler I bethought me to verify that is in fact what the Lead Voice celebrates. It is not. Trees indeed are lovely, but so, as we’ve all noticed, are…knees. So bliss yourselves, mf’s,** with this lovely lay (chopperphile Pollard’s favorite, says the inestimable NYMary).
