The Jim Mitchells & Friends

We just now discovered Sydney band The Jim Mitchells over at Little Indie Blogs, did a little more digging, found three free and legal downloadables at triple j unearthed, and want to post them before shutting down for some shuteye.

You can read more about them at triple j unearthed and Facebook, but we wanted to mention that after already being hooked, we noticed they cite as influences The Beatles, Ty Segall, White Fence, and the band formerly known as Thee Oh Sees (now simply yclept Oh Sees). So in addition to great sounds, they've got great taste.

First up is their recently released single, "Ankle Deep," the one we found at LIB.

Next we have two songs from their 2016 EP, Planet Absorbed. (Hear the whole EP, plus much more at SoundCloud.)

Here's the highly entertaining video of "Ankle Deep," our first introduction to the band.

Now, what about their friends (or perhaps should we say, "influences?")? Although you'll have to pay for it (which we gladly did), here's our favorite from Ty Segall's new EP, Fried Shallots, followed by the whole caboodle, available at Bandcamp.

You've maybe heard of British band, "The Beatles?" They're new to us, but we've been learning a ton about them via the superb podcasts by Robert Rodriguez and Richard Buskin over at Something About The Beatles

For Oh Sees, we send you to perhaps their most devoted fan in this particular universe, M. Thibault over at Still in Rock.

And finally, there's no way we're mentioning White Fence without posting our favorite song by one of our very favorite bands of the last several years.

Covers: Secret Colours (Beatles), Sick Sad World (Weezer), New Speedway (Manfred Mann/Dylan), Golden Bloom (Wussy), The Chemistry Set (The Rolling Stones), First Base (Devo)

(Not actually at pp's place)

Do you like covers? Yeh, so do we, especially on what's being called the coldest day of the year, at least in these parts. Course, it's still a fairly new one. Which reminds us: Happy NY.

Around the Blogosphere, Fond Farewell Edition: Redd Kross, Bongos, Beatles, Shins, TMBG, Wire, Pogues, TMtY, Jackson Browne

'Tis a bittersweet post, this, what with Retro Music Snob going into (we hope temporary) abeyance. We're gonna miss you, Gary, and hope you find your way back into harness soon. Thanks for all the great music. Some of these other songs express our feelings and will hopefully help us make it through the night/day/mid-morning, etc. Thanks to all ye who labor in the bloggy fields, living and dying, laughing and crying, we wouldn't have it any other way. That doesn't make complete sense, but working "Motorbreath" into this somehow seemed important.

Redd Kross – The Faith Healer – Retro Music Snob

The Beatles – Thank You Girl – Echoes in the Wind
The Shins – Young Pilgrims – Battle of the Midwestern Housewives

They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul – 17 Seconds
Wire – Kidney Bingos – 17 Seconds – Here’s to 300, 600, 9,000 more!

The Pogues – On the Sunny Side of the Street – Battle of the Midwestern Housewives

Around the Blogosphere: Beatles, R.E.M., Primitives, Church, Midnight Oil, Split Enz, a-ha, Ramones, Earlimart, Apples in Stereo, Built to Spill, etc.

I wanted to say a little something about this Around the Blogosphere series. I only do it to point you toward music I either already know and like or am newly discovering and like. I don't pretend to be hosting the music and only use the color coding to help you easily find the artists' names and to give credit to the generous bloggers who are hosting it. My thought always goes something like, "This is good stuff. I'll bet some visitors to Powerpopulist might like it, too." So far no hosting bloggers have complained about my sending them more traffic, but I would certainly cease mentioning them at the drop of a word.

I have been very grateful to the excellent aggregator Totally Fuzzy for letting me update at their blog and by their leave will continue to do so, but only songs that are downloadable from my blog. (I do post such music here, even if lately it hasn't been all that obvious.) At the Fuzzy Crew's request I will no longer be updating the Around the Blogosphere posts at Totally Fuzzy. If you have found these posts useful, please continue to stop by Powerpopulist to see some of what's available in the big, beneficent blogosphere, mainly in the realm of powerpop and indie but also "whatever we like." (You might also consider subscribing to a feed by clicking that orange feeder thingy in the upper right-hand corner.) I totally respect Totally Fuzzy and will abide by the rules and vision under which they operate. I have found tons of great music at TF and look forward to continuing to do so. As indicated, I will also continue to post music downloadable right here at Powerpopulist. My only purpose is to put you in touch with music we all might like.

Soooooo, here's some of what I've recently found. As I've said before, I try and post this information soon after finding it because most of these hosted songs only remain posted for a relatively short period of time, usually one or two weeks. I envy the bloggers who have been able to work out arrangements with the artists and record labels who let them host the music. A score or so artists and labels have allowed me to do so as well, and perhaps the longer I blog, the more I will have opportunities to host music here.

The Beatles - Across the Universe - Retro Music Snob - One of my very most favorites by my very most favorites
R.E.M. - So. Central Rain & Fall on Me & Talk About the Passion & The One I Love - Retro Music Snob - + a couple more

The ever-vigilant Retro Music Snob helped me find Echoes in the Wind, yet another new (to me) blog with top-notch listenables. And of course the other usual suspects are up to much good. Around the Blogosphere: Beatles, Hives, Flop, Boomtown Rats, Sniff n the Tears, Stars, Ether Aura, Billy Bragg, Fathom 5, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I made a vow of sorts I would not put more than five songs from Retro Music Snob in any one post. How ludacris,*** but I've stuck to it so far. Anyway, there's a lot of groovy stuff out there right now just waiting to be "sampled." For example:

The Beatles - Help! - Retro Music Snob
The Hives - Tick Tick Boom (Ruisrock 07 live) - Retro Music Snob
Flop - A. Wylie - Retro Music Snob - Silly name, excellent group, from the several songs I've heard so far.
The Boomtown Rats - Up All Night - Retro Music Snob - Apt title
Sniff n the Tears - Drivers Seat - Retro Music Snob

Stars - Ageless Beauty - Dead Flowers: Anglophiles Anonymous - Absolutely pins me.
Ether Aura - Twist & Tell Me That I’m Nothing - Hits in the Car - I'll long be grateful to Morten for introducing me to these Detroiters, one of the treasures of the last year. . .and decade.
Billy Bragg - Take Down the Union Jack (Remix) - Songs: Illinois
Fathom 5 - And the Words - Coast is Clear - One word: shoegaze.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 10 x 10 - The Glorious Hum - Notice the first/last connection? I only just did.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Gold Lion - Instrumental Analysis

Thanks, hostpersons.

***Please don't laugh, but at first I spelled it "ludakris!" Duh.

Beatles Moments at Marathonpacks

Not yet filled to surfeit by the hoopla over today’s release of the new Beatles reworking, Love? Mourning the mashup of your Beatles faves in the interests of Cirque du Soleil weirdness and Capitol’s lust for a Christmas season kick in the assets? To meet either need, and perhaps others, I recommend an enlightening click over to the always excellent marathonpacks. Eric consistently provides some of the most stimulating insights into music I’ve ever read, so much so that he gets me first to listen to, and second—gasp!—enjoy music I would ordinarily pass right by. He also takes me deeper into music I thought I already knew—like, oh, The Beatles. Earlier this year he posted a riveting discussion of his favorite moments in Beatles music and invited readers to share their own. He included excerpts of the music to illustrate his points. The response was overwhelming, so he added a sequel. Go there and I promise you happy hours that will enhance your enjoyment of The Beatles while prompting you to reflect on your own favorite moments of that magical music. Now that fills me up and leaves me wanting more.

Beatles Bootlegs

Full disclosure: major Beatlemaniac here, okay? Their music is one of my most deeply cherished possessions. The joy from that music is unspeakable. In this I am one of tens of millions, which is not all that indie or nichy. So. During my prowlings one night a year or two ago, I came across a website called Beatlegs. Although I’m not down with site names that combine words in an oh-so-clever way, the name became irrelevant when I found what was there. Somehow the owner has collected a stash of rare Beatles bootlegs. Here are my two favorites, and you will find many more at the site itself. These are .zip files, so go through the clicking process until the song launches. “Bad to Me” was a top ten hit for Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas. Through his association with Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, Kramer was allowed to record and had hits with several Lennon & McCartney songs The Beatles themselves did not release. According to Richie Unterberger at Allmusic, The Beatles gave away songs they considered inferior. Perhaps by Maclen standards they were. I am moved by the power of tender emotions simply and beautifully expressed. It wasn't all screaming and jelly babies, fun though that must have been, too.
