Yes, it officially begins. . .right about now: the South by Southwest Music Festival. Even from afar we feel the excitement. We've plunged into our archives to pull out some primo offerings for SXSW 2009 bands who either didn't post songs at the official SXSW website this year or perhaps previously made available tunes we like an ooch better. Probably shouldn't keep saying this, but, yes, we have even more, so check back in a day or two. Don't wanta overdo it now, do we? We begin with one of our very favorite bands from last year (back again this) and go from strength to strength. Click song titles to play, artist names to go to their SXSW bandpage. SWSW 2009 - Post Six: Everyday Visuals, Shiny Toy Guns, Heavenly States, Pretty & Nice, Clutters, Lazywall, We Were Lovers, My Sad Captains

(Band might cause problems this go-around.)

So, the big week's here, and so are we: South by Southwest, aka SXSW. For a shut-in such as moi, the main joyride is the cornucopia of songs the festival makes available at its splendid website. As some of you might have noticed, we've already posted a few of our favorites (c. 45), but we've got plenty more to go. Absent the onus of writing these silly little intros, we'd already have posted lots more. We're in this for the music, though, so if you are, too, start clicking (song titles to hear songs, artist names to go to their SXSW page). For the full schedule of bands-cum-mp3s, click here.

The Everyday Visuals - Boom! Boom! Boom! mp3
Shiny Toy Guns - Ghost Town mp3

SXSW 2009 - Post Five: Botticellis, Black Hollies, High Dials, B. Scary, Gramercy Arms, Marching Band, Magic Wands, K. Andrews

We've taken a few days off from this now, so let's head back south by southwest. (I personally would have to climb totally inward, being pretty much exactly sxsw.) Anyway, the following are songs we've posted before but are still very much enjoying. Maybe you missed them the first time around or would like to hear them again? (Middle finger over index.) We've still got plenty of newbies to post, coming soon. Click artist names to go to band's SWSW site, song titles to download songs. Previous SXSW posts here.

Behold! a few more songs we very much like-to-love by artists scheduled to play at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas next month. Sorry about the generic titles this year for these SXSW posts. Last year it was Franglish and oh-so-chic. This year, well, as you see. (Fortunately it doesn't seem to affect the music.) Click song titles to play songs, artist names to go to their SXSW page. SXSW posts for this and previous years can be found here.

We Should Be Dead - Forget Romance, Let's Dance! mp3 - We bought a bunch of this Limerick band's songs last month, as noted here. (Scroll way down when you get to the page.)

We continue with more of our favorite bands appearing at this year's South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. The full schedule of showcases is here. More such posts will appear here at Powerpopulist in the coming days. Previous SXSW posts, with lots of mp3s, can be found here.

A Mix of Known & New (to Me)

SXSW 2009 - Post One: Dollyrots, Zolof the R&R Destroyer, Artefacts For Space Travel, Cocktail Slippers, Magneta Lane

I know I sound like a broken mp3 but I really do get excited every year when the Southwest by Southwest Music Festival posts its schedule of showcases, along with hundreds and hundreds of mp3s by artists who will be performing in Austin, Texas (USA) on the dates indicated above. Over the next I don't know how many days, I'll be posting some of my favorites. Some of them are actually old friends, some I've already posted, but one of the great pleasures is coming across bands totally new to me. Clicking the song titles will unleash the music. Clicking the artist names will take you to that particular act's SXSW page, where you can see pictures and visit band and MySpace pages. I hope you find a lot to like. After experimenting a bit, I'm going to do two quick initial posts because some of these groups have long names and I want to be sure and get all these groups included in the LABELS thingies at the bottom of the post. I probably didn't need to share that bit of bloggatrivia, but oh well. Incidentally, SXSW posts from previous years can be found here.

Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer - Death or Radio mp3

SXSW 2008 - We Get It

All week long I've been anxiously on the lookout for the magic moment when the SXSW Music and Media Conference posts its list of artist bios and mp3s for this year's festival, which runs in Austin, Texas, from March 11-16. I've just spent seven hours poring over the list and compiled my own list of the 286 artists I liked best. Some of them don't really fit here, but I've got a hunch you're going to like quite a few. Last year I did a series of posts, beginning with the longish Big Bloc 4, most of which you can still hear by clicking here and here. This year I'm trying something different, posting 10 or so at a time. Hopefully this will be more manageable for you and will also let me attach labels to all the artists, in case visitors want to check them out in the future. Anyway, here's the first post, with others soon to follow. Clicking the artist names will take you to their SXSW page, which also has links to more information about them. I imagine everybody and his blog is linking to these SXSW pages right about now, and I've noticed that the songs are sometimes slow to load. Patience is advised.

Humptaggers: Fields, Mary Timony Band, Palomar, Noodles

Yes, someone actually found this blog this week using a Google Search for "Humptag." Whether they found what they were looking for I might never know. But where was I? Right, nowhere, so let's go where. I just found the Fields song earlier this evening at AOL’s Spinner.com, which I strongly encourage you to visit for more great music. I really liked their "If You Fail, We All Fail," which I posted on April Fools' Day (really), and am very glad to have today's tune as well. I sent some of you scurrying over to another blog to get The Mary Timony Band song last month and delight in finally having it here. Palomar have also given pleasure here (and here ) before and I suspect will do so with "Woah!" I nabbed it with Pitchfork. We conclude with a SXSW 2005 fave by a band new to me called Noodles. You can read more about all these bands by clicking on their names. Personally, I like to listen first and read later, but suit yourself, I'm easy. I hope both sides of the hump prove good for you this week.

Ash, Starky, Young Galaxy, Kelly's Heels

So much music, so little time. Over the weekend I dug back into the SXSW 2005 site and found another 50 or 60 songs I rated at three stars or better. (Translation: I like 'em a lot.) For the next several weeks I'll be working in a few per day, along with current goodstuff I happen upon. Thanks to visitor "John's" recent tout, Ireland's Ash have been for me one of the most exciting close encounters of the heard kind in many a moon. Imagine if you dare (and why not) my embarrassment/excitement to find them right there as one of the SXSW Showcasing bands back in 2005, which is by way of saying we lead off with them. Next we're calling Sydney for a song by Starky I've liked for a year or two now. (I posted Starky's "Hey Bang Bang" at Big Bloc 4, which I must confess is one of my favorite posts since I started blogging.) Then we get a bit more au courant with a goodun by Montrealers Young Galaxy, brought to earth at the excellent AOL Spinner.com. We close this set with a pleaser brought to our attention by a representative of the London band, Kelly's Heels. Thanks, Katy! Click the artists' names for more info, music, etc.

FanoFanatic 2: Bang Gang & Sleeping in the Aviary

It's a bit of a dodge calling this "FanoFanatic 2" because Mark Davis over at Fanatic Promotion has been sending highly listenable product to me and other bloggers on a steady basis of late, and I've repeatedly indulged. I've been a fan of Iceland's Bang Gang (weird how one little word reversal and we're into entirely different territory) since posting "Find What You Get" on the SXSW Big Bloc 4 extravagonzo back in February. I'm reposting that song, plus two recent arrivals. Sleeping in the Aviary hail from one of my favorite cities I've never been to, Madison, WI. Clever name, although I instinctively reach for protective gear, particularly if the birds are awake. "Pop Song" describes itself, and at this blog, that's good. "Another Girl" was good if iffy until that Kinksy riff at the 1:30 mark canceled reservations. Aha! I just noticed the FP blurb on SITA actually uses the word "spastic!" I knew it wasn't just me.

SXSW 2007: Let The Music Begin!

Yessss, the big day has finally arrived. We celebrate with a triple handful, mostly of groups not yet posted here. (There are a couple of exceptions.) I'll put them in groups of five just to make it seem less daunting. Links are provided for each band. If the mp3 link doesn't work, clink on the band name to go to the SXSW bandsite, where the song should be downloadable. These SXSW links have been finicky at times. Three Imaginary Girls Might Have The Cure For The Blues

Here's some tempting news from Three Imaginary Girls, and since I'm reasonably close, I'm quite inclined to go. They even threw in some free mp3s I'm passing along to you, so maybe we're all happy. Here's part of their email message.

Three Imaginary Girls is pleased as punch to announce our first-ever showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas, with co-sponsors Magic Marker Records, Music Nation, and KOOP 91.7FM. The event will take place at Lovejoy's in downtown Austin on Thursday, March 15, 2007, from 12-6p. The show is free to the public, with free beer (while supplies last), and delightful live music from an international line-up of pop superstar bands:
12p: The Zebras (Brisbane, Australia)
1p: The Manhattan Love Suicides (Leeds, UK)
2p: BOAT (Seattle, WA)
3p: Tullycraft (Seattle, WA)
4p: The Faintest Ideas (Gothenburg, Sweden)
5p: Palomar (Brooklyn, NY)

And here are some of the tunes. We're having a bit of linking trouble, so please be patient. I'm leaving out some of the band links so the songs will work.

The Manhattan Love Suicides Suzy Jones mp3

BOAT - The Bar Is Too Low To Fail mp3

The Faintest Ideas - Nosebleeders on the Track mp3

Tullycraft - Popsongs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About mp3

And now for the moral conundrum: Am I being used? I hope so.

SXSW 2007, cont'd: Alternative Champs, Dirty Skirts, Hedrons, Melismatics, Oxford Collapse

Oh, yeh, I've still got some SXSW bands yet to post. I just don't know how you're taking to the whole SXSW gig I've been doing and don't want to overdo it. I remember liking Capetown's The Dirty Skirts (pic) and pointed visitors toward the excellent The Muso because I didn't have a link. Now I do, so voila. The Hedrons are not covering AC/DC here, but that's okay, they're sufficiently hot. As for Oxford Collapse, I don't often go for the amusical hyperscreech so beloved of many indie bloggers, not to mention the overlong intro, but the rootsy guitar riffs pull this one back from the edge. Well, santa caca, look at me just opining away like I'm a real blogger or something. Ya basta.
