Various ‎– People Take Warning! (Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913-1938)

Probably sums up my life being a disaster. In the vein of Alan Lomax music research this compilation gathers stories about disasters (say Titanic) and murders, of course in country, roots, blues and bluegrass styles. 2007 3 X Cd on Tompkins Square.

Enahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou ‎– Éthiopiques, Vol. 21

An Ethiopian nun playing solo piano who released music to raise money for orphan children. This is one of the few records I've played to my partner that she likes, so I guess it must be good enough. She plays really passionate - yet mostly calming - gospel/blues/modal jazz tunes, which is shocking given that she's not African-American. Highly recommended stuff. 2006 cd on Buda Musique.

Dario Lozano-Thornton - 42 Rokeby Terrace

Awesome debut album by this Spanish-Irish multi-instrumentalist who enjoys recording diy at home with vintage instruments. His music is a mix of blues, jazz and improvisation in the vein of Captain Beefheart, New Orleans jazz/blues with a very warm sound and excellent musicianship. Check this out, it's really worth listening. 2016 self-released cdr.
