Can you tell, I have the wanderlust.

I noticed that the flower beds in France

have taken on a new look.

A thing of the past are rows upon rows of marigolds and petunias lined up in perfect soldier-like fashion.

Nowhere else was this more evident than in the small town of St. Emilion, Bordeaux Region, France.

St. Emilion, tucked away in hills and beautifully cared for vineyards, is the perfect place from which to enjoy the Bordeaux wine country.

Well cared for vineyards and tidy streets connect cobbled small squares,  and well stocked wine shops.

Of the Bordeaux's famous red wines, St. Emilion Reds represent 5% of the regions total production.

Hostellerie de Plaisance, St. Emilion, France.

A souvenir from St. Emilion for my Thanksgiving Table.

Have a great weekend  my dear friends.

Hello dear Friends, I'm back.

A little while ago I introduced you to Kientzheim

A very small village in the Alsace of France. While there we had only a little glimpse into the very next village.  It was so charming that we just had to go back for another look.

So here is another little jewel, Kaysersberg, only a few kilometers down the road.

It is the area in between the two towns where the real story is told.

It is all about the famous wines and special gastronomy along the
Routes des vins d'Alsace.

There are many more stories to tell...they will have to wait for another day.

Thank you dear friends for visiting.

Can't help myself

Must go to Italy
and a few places in between.

Enough of bottling and canning.

It's time to make new discoveries.

The rest of the pears can wait.

Bon Voyage dear Friends.

See you soon.

While in Italy

It was my intention to eat Gelato every single day,

maybe even twice a day.

That didn't happen.  I almost missed this opportunity if my eye hadn't caught the hand painted tiles in this shop in Sestri Levante,  Italy.

So much to do and so much to see in Sestri Levante.
Gelato sometimes has to take a back seat.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Dei Castelli in Siestri Levante, Liguria, Italy,  many years ago.  Thankfully, not much has changed.

The rooms are beautiful, the dinner was fabulous.

The Hotel retains its charm while providing modern amenities for their guests.

The Castelli sits on top of a hill and has an elevator that takes you down 5 stories to the ocean side promenade.  Another elevator takes you to their private beach, imported sand and all.

And then, Relais del Maro a new discovery!

Borgomaro

And the fabulous hotel Relais del Maro.

A little out of the way but only 15 minutes north of the Italian Riviera between San Remo and Albegno, Italy.

This is where we met a very confused and lost little black and white Spaniel.
He would repeatedly cross the only road in the village,
completely lost and wearing out.

I knew that it was only a matter of time and he would get hurt.

The hotel owners tried to find his owner. They made numerous calls and posted a notice on the internet.

In the meantime he was safe in the furnace room.

Gene decided that this was not how the owner could find his dog.

No leash was available so Gene wrapped an orange wedding ribbon around his neck and he and the lost dog sat on the bench, across from the hotel, in the rain, for almost 2 hours.

I felt sorry for both of them. I took out a cup of tea for Gene (yes, the hotel serves high tea in the afternoon). We sat for another half an hour.

Suddenly a car drove up, a man jumped out and the dog flew into his arms, wedding ribbon and all.

Relais del Maro
is spread among three different buildings in the middle of town and a few steps up a side hill.

If you like to shop, this is not the place for you.  If you just want to spend a few days relaxing, maybe hiking a little and just be pampered by the hotel staff, than this is the place.

This beautiful church is the largest building in town.
What I like about European churches is that they are open, every day and all hours of the day.

If you must make a choice then these two places I would like to suggest for your next visit to either Italy or Germany.
the Herrnschlösschen in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany and the Albergo Diffuso Relais Del Maro, Italy.

Leaving the beautiful Italian and French Riviera and driving toward Avignon, France, we found another charming chateau.

The Chateau de Varenne is located on a quiet side street in the small hamlet of Sauveterre.

Love the use of red in these old walls.

Growing out of an ancient wall, a powerful perfume guided us up the stone steps.

Driving towards Paris.
We stopped in at the Chateau De Bellecroix, near Chagney, France.

This was a "Discovery" trip.

We didn't stay long in any of the places we visited.
The bonus is that we now know where our next visit will take us.  Then we can take our time and get better acquainted with the surrounding area.

All of our places were chosen because they were beautiful, interesting, in the quiet countryside, with easy parking and , hopefully a good place to rest your head on a comfortable pillow.

And fine dining, if we are lucky.

Chateau de Bellecroix filled all of those requirements.

Happy travels my dear friends.

Chateaus and Villas

By Car through France and Italy.

Part I

Chateau De Chesne
Nohant En Gracay, Le Chesne, France.

Day one.  About 3 hours South of Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Perfect distance to get acquainted with our new rental car.

Chateau De Chesne is located in a beautiful country setting.  The perfect stopover for the first night in France.

Here is a tribute to the longevity of hand made ceramic tiles.

Owned by a charming and handsome French Aristocrat.

A beautiful breakfast awaited us the next morning.

On to La Pouyette.

Yes, the charming Karin we know from the blog with the same name.

Karin and Mr R welcomed us like old friends.

We stayed at La Pouyette in 2012.
La Pouyette is located near the town of Perigueux.

This very special spot is the perfect guest house from which to explore the very interesting and unique Dordogne region.

When we arrived Karin was shelling walnuts which she had gathered from her ancient tree.

I joined in.  It reminded me of my younger days when I would sit in a circle with the older village women shelling peas, listening to the newest gossip.

As before, Karin prepared for us a most delicious French dinner.

No one does it better, it is always a feast for the eyes and the palate.

La Pouyette is about a 6 to 7 hour drive from Paris.  The drive is  beautiful with many interesting sites and ancient villages to admire along the way.

On to Arles, our longest drive, with many side trips.

By now I had figured out how to program our Mercedes Benz navigation system.  Much superior to my hand held GPS I brought from home.

The Jules Cesar, is part of the "Small Luxury Hotel of the World".

We stayed at the Cesar more than forty years ago.

Some of it looked familiar.

Some did not.

Don't remember these colorful tiles in our bathroom floor.

Bright greenish yellow walls and colorful upholstered pieces in public spaces.

No wonder, all recently designed by famous French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

On to the French Riviera and to

the Hotel Le Roquebrune Cap Martin, France

Not even the  GPS could find this place clinging to the side of the Mountain and overlooking the Mediterranean, near Monaco and Monte Carlo.

Ah,  the Cinque Terre and Monterosso al Mare.

We stayed at the La Serra Sul Mare

internet

The La Serra Sul Mare B & B  is located above Monterosso.  It has easy parking and reliable and frequent bus service into town.

Excellent views, super friendly staff and some of the finest breakfasts in Europe.

From the center of Monterosso it is only a short and picturesque walk to the train station.

Once on the train you can visit the other famous Cinque Terre towns.  My favorite town is Vernazza.  Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are also on the same line.

Next stop.

The lovely Etruscan town of Bibbona in Tuscany.

And one of the loveliest Hotels in all of Italy.

More to come in a day or two.

Have a great Sunday my dear friends.

The perfect Ferienhaus in the Perigueux

This perfect Vacation House sits in the beautiful countryside of the famous Perigueux region of France.

It is owned by Karin and Ron known to us from the very special blog "La Pouyette".

Every nook, every corner holds a unique and beautiful surprise.

Interiors are elegant and rustic at the same time.

Small meandering roads take you through the peaceful countryside and charming villages.  The perfect places to just "follow your nose" and let the GPS get you back on track when you're ready.

Where empty and stately manor houses appear at every turn.

And where hidden farm houses, offer Foie Gras made by the prideful owner using his most secret recipe.   A short stop at the local Boulangerie every morning completes the Picnic.

Where ancient stone walls, covered with lichen, mark ancient boundaries.

And if you take the smaller highways you might run into a Brocante or two.

My goodness, only three Euros, of course it's now mine.

The La Pouyette Ferienhaus is replete with everything a traveler could wish for.  Nothing is missing.  Everything is perfect.

Karin's  'almost black'  rose.

It was a special joy to watch Karin prepare dinner for us in her ancient farm house kitchen.  I was admiring and marveling at Karin's considerable skill and efficiency in her kitchen.  No wonder, amongst her many talents, such as collecting fine Antiques, restoring ancient farm houses, Interior Designer,  Karin also owned and operated a restaurant in Germany.

La Pouyette is the perfect place to use as home base while visiting the Dordogne of France.
Did I tell you that it also has a swimming pool?

Thank You Karin and Ron.

Happy travels my dear
Blogging Friends.
