Apples, Apples and more Apples.

Every other year we have a huge apple crop.

What to do with all those apples.
If you live in this little town you can take them to the Post Office and leave them by the door.
Soon they will have found a new home.

I'll get the ladders out and invite my friends and neighbors.
The pig farmer gathers the fallen apples
and the deer take care of the rest.

The apple press is rolled out again.

It's easier going if we first cut up the apples into smaller pieces.

The most intensely flavored and concentrated apple juice  is the result.

The light frost made them sweet and ready to pick.

Have you seen this little wonder of an apparatus?
It peels, cores and slices, all with one motion, apples and pears and potatoes.

And pears already picked.

For the perfect pear pie.

There are many more apples to pick and/or press.

Have a lovely week my dear friends.

What is it?

Have you used one of these?

Looks a bit dangerous, doesn't it.

I'm not much for gadgets but this one works.
I have used it every fruit season.
It saves hours of time.

It's an apple peeler.

By simply turning the handle it peels, slices and cores apples.

It also peels pears and potatoes.

All you have to do is add a little sugar to apple  slices and cook until soft.

Freeze or bottle.

You can even bake a loaf or two of
Apple Sauce Cake in the middle of winter.

I am curious.
How many of you have used this peeler ?
I would love to know.

Have a great week dear friends.

Join me for a little fun.

It all began this way.

And then...

Lots and lots of apples followed.

Apples for winter pies.

 Delicious pies.

And more apple pies.

And all of my pies hold a secret.

Even this Gooseberry Pie.

If you have been reading me for a little while you know that my fruit pies are made with:

a) buttermilk
b) unsalted butter
c) bottom crust
d) fruit from my garden
e) unbleached flour

Which is not true?

Can you guess?

Have a great week dear friends.

Back Home

And happy to be here.

Lot's of work waiting for me.

It was a very good year.
Every fruit tree is laden.

Canadian Geese never left.
They are gorging themselves on fallen apples and pears.

Clyde and Lola have decided to get along with the interlopers after all.

Have already filled many shelves in the cellar.

Lakota squash are stored.

Love them all, flowers and fruit.

Himrod grapes take longer to ripen
Interlaken grapes were harvested before we left for Europe.

A few stragglers left.

I don't think that the little apple tree will make it through the winter.
We will try and prop it up and see what happens.
It bears delicious apples.  Don't want to lose it.

Time to admire the evening light and recharge.

Hope you are taking time out to enjoy your surroundings.

My garden is growing...all by itself.

My garden

Nasturtiums for salads

Onions are almost fully grown.

Our favorite squash, Lakota, is doing well in the new patch.

Foxglove and State Fair Zinnias provide lots of color.

The Italians only grow one kale.

Lacinato Nero de Toscana.

There is a reason.  It is delicious, nutritious and easy to grow and handle.

These peppers where planted by mistake.  They are quite large.

Do you know what they are? And do you have a recipe?  Could one stuff them?

My tuberous begonias never disappoint.  I can't remember how old they are.
They go into a dark corner in my greenhouse and I don't see them until April of the following year.

Everything is maturing all at once...there is not enough time in the day to get it all harvested.

There will be lots of vegetables and fruits to share with friends and neighbors

There will be lots of apples this year for the pig farmer.

This turned out to be the best mixed lettuce seed packet.
I'm heading for Italy soon.  Will look for another.

This is one of the last hollyhocks, a reminder to gather their seeds.

My old rose bushes surprise me with a few blooms now and then.

Wishing you a great week ahead.

What to do

I know what to do with our Apples

Many varieties growing in our garden.

I know what to do with our plums and pears.

I know what to do with our winter grapes

I know what to do with Greens from our garden.

I know what to do with sour cherries from our garden.

and red beets from our garden.

I know what to do with our peaches.

and our cabbages and eggplants.

I know what to do with our apricots

and with our onions.

But I don't know

what to do with our Asian Pears.

My tree is laden with fruit.

They are sweet and crunchy, great for salads.

But they are not good for baking.

Preserves are good enough, just not great.

Should I buy a dehydrator?
Have you tried to dry them, I haven't.

Do you have a favorite recipe or idea.

Would you share?

Have a great remainder of the week dear friends,

Gina
