As has become tradition here at So ManY Roads, our last show on new year's Eve, and the last show of the year, features the one and only Grateful Dead.  of course, its a logical choice since the Dead played 22 times on New Year's Eve between 1966 and 1991, skipping only 1967, 1973, 1974, and 1975.  (Note - Jerry Garcia sat in with the Allmans on New Year's Eve 1973 and played a solo gig on December 31, 1975, so he only skipped 2 years!)Since we featured some great shows from 1971 earlier this month, we decided to stick with that year, and bring you this soundboard recording from December 31, 1971, 45 years ago today!

Happy New Year!

Elvis Costello - 1981-12-31 - New York, NY (SBD)

For our 2nd New Year's Ever post today, we bring you a soundboard recording from elvis Costello at the Palladium in New York on December 31, 1981, 32 years ago today! Costello had actually released 2 albums that year, Trust in January and Almost Blue in May.  While the first disc reflected many of the punk, new wave and power pop sensibilities of his earlier work, the latter album was a complete departure from previous form.  Almost Blue consisted entirely of country covers, including works originally written by Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Gram Parsons.  It was just one of the many twists and turns, emcompassing various musical styles, in the careerof teh man born Declan Patrick Aloysius Macmanus.

Hall and Oates have always been part of a musical style known as "blue eyed soul", a term coined in the 1960s to describe R&B and soul music played by white artists. such bands often played songs recorded in a style similar to music found on the predominantly black Motown and Stax labels.  Little wonder then, that during the New Year's Eve 1978 concert, 338 years ago today in Pittsburgh, Hall and Oates performed a cover of The Temptation's number one single from 1965, My Girl.

Bruce Springsteen - 1975-12-30 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

For Bruce Springsteen, 1975 was the year that vaulted him from NJ Rocker to Nationwide Superstar. The release of the album Born To Run, and his legendary live shows hows in August at the Bottom Line in New York, took him from the front page of the Asbury Park Press to the covers of Newsweek and Time.  Springsteen finished that historic year with 4 shows at The Tower Theater In Philadelphia, just across the river from New Jersey.  The New year's Eve show from that run has been officially leased while, a few years ago, we posted a soundboard from night 2 on December 28.  Today we bring you a soundboard of night 3, on December 30, 1975, 41 years ago today. One note - this one is NOT officially released. A check of the Springsteen site shows its the next night that you can purchase!

The Clash - 1979-12-27 - London, UK (SBD)

As 1979 came to a close, a host of rock superstars came together for a 4 nigh series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London to raise money for the victims of war-torn Cambodia. The 4 shows, entitled The Concerts For The People OF Kampuchea,, featured the following acts:
  • December 26: Queen
  • December 27: Ian Dury, Matumba and The Clash
  • December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who
  • December 29: Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Paul McCartney & Wings
A double album featuring highlights from the concert was released in 1981, but due to a host of record company issues, has never been released in any digital format. That said, today we have some highlights of from The Clash's set from the 2nd show, on December 27, 1979, 37 years ago today, which were not included on the album when released. Download this soundboard recording now, then come back tomorrow for The Pretenders from night 3 of the Concerts For Kampuchea.

Just one slight catch - the original Chrome Dreams album was never released!  Neil scrapped that disc in favor of releasing the album American Stars & Bars. Many tracks scheduled for Chrome Dreams eventually showed up on American Stars & Bars as well as on Rust Never Sleeps.  In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Neil in New York during that tour on December 19, 2007, 9 years ago today.

Requests For Reposts

Over the years, I've done by best to re-post dead links when asked. However, once again, in recent weeks, it has simply gotten out of hand. I have several folks asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, or leaving 5 or 6  comments in a row, all requesting re-posts.

While I appreciate folks wanting the music, I simply do not have the time to deal with that volume of requests. If I tried to, I'd never have a chance to post anything new. let alone manage my job, family, etc.

So, if there's a show you would like me to re-post, I'll do my best to get to it. But if you are simply asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. I know that may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything.

Thanks for understanding.

During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to playing solo shows with assorted backing players. This excellent audience recording captures Jerry at  The Keystone in Berkeley on December 17, 1975, 41 years ago today, backed by Jon Kahn on bass, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards and Ron Tutt on drums. A Garcia at show at the Keystome was hardly a surprise in any year as according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984.

While the Grass Roots had their heyday in the psychedelic 60s, lead singer Rob Grill toured with various incarnations of the group from the 1980s right up to his death in 2011. This soundboard recording captures the band on December 16, 2000, 16 years ago today, in Bethlehem PA. Their 2 shows that night included the band’s 2 biggest hits, Lets Live For Today which went to #8 on the Billboard charts in 1967 and Midnight Confessions, which climbed to #5 the following year. What most folks don’t know, however, is that both of those top ten tunes were covers! Let's Live for Today was written by David Shapiro, Ivan Mogul, and Michael Julien, and initially recorded by the English band the Rokes in 1966. Midnight Confessions was written by Lou T. Josie and originally performed by the Ever-Green Blues.

In August 1988, John Hiatt released the album Slow Turning, his follow up to his 1987 breakout album, Bring The Family. Hiatt is backed on the album by the Goners: Sonny Landreth on guitar, Dave Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The album contains some of Hiatt’s best know tunes, including Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Feels Like Rain and the title track. The single Slow Turning received significant airplay and has several notable lines. The chorus of “not fade way’ echoes the Buddy Holly song of the same name, while the line “never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need” is reminiscent of a line from the Stone’s You Can’t Always get What You Want. Speaking of the Stones, Slow Turning also features the lyric “I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts”.  I’ve said it in other posts but it’s worth repeating here – John Hiatt is a vastly under rated singer/songwriter. Download this FM broadcast of Hiatt on tour with the Goners in support of the Slow Turning Album, from San Diego on December 16, 1987, 29 years ago today, and see for yourself!

In December 1993, Van Morrison played The Mystic Theater in Petaluma, CA, a show from which several tracks were drawn for his live album, A Night In San Francisco. Van performed at the same venue just about a year earlier, on December 15, 1992, 2 dozen years ago today, and might have been in even better form, as evidenced in this high quality audience recording. Near the end of the show, Van breaks out one of his earliest covers, a rendition of Bob Dylan’s It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue. Van first performed the Dylan tune with Them in 1966, and thought so highly of it that he included the song on his 2nd “best of” compilation released in 1993.

On November 2, 1974, George Harrison launched a major North American tour, becoming the first Beatle to tour solo on that continent! Billed As George Harrison and Friends, the concerts included segments by Tom Scott, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar. Unfortunately for George, the tour was problematic, to say the least. The former Beatle had blown out his voice completing the soon to be released album Dark Horse. He had vocal problems at many of the concerts, leading some critics to dub the shows the "Dark HOARSE" tour. Many fans also had issues with the concerts, growing weary of the long segments performed by Ravi Shankar. In addition, fans disliked that Harrison changed the lyrics and tempo of many of his better known songs, while leaving the classic Here Comes The Sun completely off the set list. All that said, this tour still holds a unique place in rock history, as it was the only time George toured in the US. Rumors abound that a formal release of film footage and concert tracks from that tour is in the works, but all that is still speculation. In the meantime, we'll have to make due with bootlegs from the tour. This high quality audience recording captures “Hari On Tourr” in Landover on December 13, 1974, 42 years go today.

Attend a Billy Joel concert and the expectation, of course, is to hear legendary piano driven pop songs. So, I doubt anyone in the audience at the Billy Joel concert in Nagoya on December 12, 2006,  a decade ago today, was quite prepared for the cover tune played one of Mr. Joel’s roadies, a man affectionately nicknamed Chainsaw. That’s AC DC’s Highway to Hell blasting away on this FM Broadcast, quite possibly the last song you’d ever expect to hear at a show by the one and only Piano Man. By the way, when my wife and I saw Billy earlier that year in February, we were also treated to Mr. Chainsaw’s rendition of the tune!

In 2000, The Alarm released a box set covering all recorded material by the band. It also included sleeve notes to which all four members had contributed. This was the first project where all four original members had contributed since Mike Peters had left the band in 1991. The group also released a DVD collection that year entitled Greatest Hits Live. Following the box set and DVD releases, Peters used The Alarm name on  tour to promote both.  Peters used were his backing band from his solo endeavors in in the late 1990s; Steve Grantley from Stiff Little Fingers, Craig Adams from The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and The Cult, and James Stevenson from Chelsea and Gene Loves Jezebel. This soundboard recording captures the band during that tour on December 9, 2000, 16 years ago today, in Liverpool.

Welcome to the 4th and final night of the Dead's 1971 run at the Felt Forum, a soundboard recording from December 7, 1971, 45 years ago today. As mentioned in earlier posts, the Grateful Dead were at a pivotal time in their career in late 1971.  The prior year, the band, who had been the leaders of the psychedelic rock movement, featuring live exploratory jams in concert  released 2 incredible studio albums. Working Man's Dead and American Beauty.  Both discs are filled with remarkable tunes such as Uncle John's Band, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones, Friend of The Devil, Box of Rain and Truckin to name a few, that fused rock, country, bluegrass and folk that truly represented American songcraft. In addition,  the band was in transition, with Mickey Hart having left in February 1971 (to return in 1974) and Pigpen playing less and less of a role in the band, as health issues and an inability to truly grasp the new material plagued him. In fact, he had just returned to touring with the band in December 1971 after an extended absence. The set lists reflected his lessened role,  as tunes such as Turn On Your Lovelight and Good Lovin, which had been showcases for Pigpen's bluesy style, rarely appeared. Moreover, Keith Godchaux joined the Dead on keyboards in the fall of 1971, playing is first show in Minneapolis on October 19 and adding a jazzy piano influence to the band's performances.. His wife Donna Jean, would sit in with the Dead on New Year's Eve 1971, then officially join the group in 1972.  This was a band poised to go beyond its San Francisco roots, ready to conquer all of the Us, and in 1972, Europe as well!

The Who - 1973-12-06 - Capital Center, Landover, MD (SBD)

In October 1973, The Who released the album Quadropehnia which Pete Townshend has claimed is "the best music that I've ever written, I think, and it's the best album that I will ever write.". The band's second rock opera, Quadrophenia tells album the story of Jimmy, who has 4 personalities, or quadrophenia, a play on the term schizophrenia. The title is also a sly reference to the fact that the album was recorded in quadraphonic sound, a brand new technology at the time that required four speakers for full effect. Jimmy's four personalities were based on traits from the 4 original members of the Who (Townshend, Daltry, Entwistle and Moon), making the album somewhat a biography of the band. The Who toured extensively behind the album in 1973 and 1974, but those shows were among the most frustrating of their career. The goal was to play the entire album in concert, but efforts to recreate many of the disc's complex sounds through the use of backing tapes often resulted in disaster. Sometimes the band felt limited in their ability to play as their live music needed to be tied exactly to the backing tapes. Other times the tapes failed completely, throwing the show into complete disarray. By the last shows of the tour, the band was playing less than 1/2 the songs from Quadrophenia  This soundboard recording captures the Who on the last night of the North American leg of that tour, on December 6, 1973, 43 years ago today.

OFFICIALLY RELEASED - LINK REMOVED

Today, we bring you the 3rd night of the Grateful Dead's 1971 4 show run at the Felt Forum in New York, a soundboard recording from December 6, 1971, 45 years ago this very day. These shows were a pivotal time in the Dead's career. The December 5 broadcast, for example, was not an isolated instance, but rather part of a well planned out strategy to publicize the band.  The Dead had just released their self titled double live album, better known as Skull  & Roses, and had secured $100,000 (a hefty sum for the time) to promote the disc. As they often did, the Dead took an out of the box approach to publicize the album.,  Rather than spend the money on advertising, they instead used it to broadcast 15 shows on their fall tour between October 19 and December 31. Rarely in rock history has such a concentrated series of live broadcast ever taken place to promote a band and a album.  Often times the broadcasts lasted 5 or 6 hours, as in addition to the Dead's 2 set show, the opening act, the New Riders of The Purple Stage, also was aired live. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia usually sat in with the Riders before his show with the Dead. You can find more detail on these historic broadcasts here at the blog Lost Live Dead. Stop back tomorrow when we'll bring you night 4 of this run and provide even more historical background to these shows.

For the late great Leon Russell, the year 1970 was marked by one major success after another. He organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You.  Finally, later that year, on December 5, 1970, 46 years ago today, Russell recorded the Homewood Sessions, which became the first concert performance broadcast simulcast on radio (KPPC-FM) and television (PBS station KCET). While the show was intended for official release that never happened,  but fortunately this FM broadcast preserves that historic show for all of us to enjoy.  RIP.

In early December 1971, the Grateful Dead took up residence for 4 nights at the Felt Forum in New York City.  The Felt Forum was a small theater, which seated between 3000 and 5000 people, located underneath the main arena at Madison Square Garden, The Forum was most often used for boxing matches, though numerous rock bands also played the venue, including The Doors, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed and Santana. When Madison Square Garden was remodeled in 1990, the Felt Forum became the Paramount, and later was known as The Theater at MSG. Scott Muni, legendary WNEW-FM DJ and long time friend of the Grateful Dead, arranged to have the station broadcast night 2 of the Dead’s Felt Forum run, on December 5, 1971, 45 years ago today. Muni would be live at the Theater, and coordinated with Denis Elsas in the studio to fill in gaps before the show started and during the set break. For more details, go here to see the letter from Muni to the WNEW staff regarding the broadcast. As mentioned yesterday, this concert was very first Grateful Dead bootleg I ever owned, lovingly preserved for years on a Maxell tape cassette. Now thanks to the magic of digital technology and the internet, we can all throw away the tapes and download a copy of that FM broadcast with the click of the link above. By the way, it would 7 years and 1 month before the Dead again played at Madison Square Garden, when they played the main arena on January 7, 1979, the first of 52 shows at that venue! Stop back tomorrow and the next day for 2 more from this run.
