After spending the early part of 1974 on tour backing Bob Dyaln, The Band once again found themseleves in a supporting role on September 14, 1974, a haldf century ago today.  CSNY headlined that day at Wembley Stadium iin London before a crowd of over 100,000, with opening acts Jesse Colin Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Scott & The LA Express, and The Band. For CSNY, it would be their last show together for over 25 years.  For The Band, it would be another monumental rock festival, to go along with their appearances at Woodstock and Watkins Glen. This TV soundboard recording captures The Band's entire set, with all the tracks split out, a big upgrade from the version we posted last year.

LINK REMOVED OFFICIALLY RELEASED

Incredibly, as half a million gathered for an Aquarian Exposition on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, Bob Dylan was actually living in Woodstock. He hadn't performed live since his near fatal motor cycle accident in 1966. Promoters offered him a headlining spot to make his comeback, but Dylan declined. Some sources claim it was because his son fell ill.  Others say that Bob was tired of the growing numbers of "hippies and druggies" gathering near his home. Whatever the reason, Bob passed on Woodstock.

Ironically, while the organizers of Woodstock couldn't get Dylan to play live in his own backyard, the promoters of the Isle Of Wight Festival enticed him to cross the pond with tales of the island's cultural and literary history. So, just two weeks after Woodstock, Dylan, backed by The Band, took the stage for a 17 song set, as captured in this soundboard recording.  Also on the bill were Woodstock veterans The Who, Joe Cocker, and Richie Havens. Dylan's appearance drew over 150,000 to the festival, not only for his coomeback, but also because rumors abounded that he would be joined on stage by The Beatles!  In truth, 3 of the Fab Four - John, George, and Ringo - were in attendance, but simply as fans.

NOTE: As of Sept 2 at 4:30, a new link is up for this show. The original upload was missing track 15.  I found it elsewhere, though at only 160 kbps.  I added it to the folder and added a new link to the fixed folder, which now includes the lower bit rate track 15.

As 500,000 fans descended on Max Yagur's farm for 3 days of peace, love and music, The Band were actually living right near Woodstock! They had recorded their legendary debut album, Music From Big Pink in the area, the title being a reference to the house they were living in at the time. The Band took the stage at Woodstock around 10 pm on August 17, though their performance was not included in the movie due to a dispute over rights fees.

This post jumps ahead some 26 years after Woodstock and almost 19 years after the "Last Waltz" in 1976.  The Band reunited in 1983, sans Robbie Robertson, and continued to be a vibrant force in rock into the late 1990s. In 1993, they released the album Jericho, which included a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. In 1994, they played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped that year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band This soundboard recording captures The Band a year later, in Schwenksville, on August 27, 1995, 29 years ago today.

The Band 1991 - Back To Back - #1: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for a giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on numerous occasions in the late 1980s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night, invoking memories of how concerts at venues such as the Fillmore East were scheduled in the Woodstock era.  When the venue closed in 1989, the owners opened a new location, called the Lone Star Roadhouse, and The Band followed.  This soundboard recording captures them on the first of 2 nights at the roadhouse, on July 30, 1991, 33 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The Band 1995 - Back To Back - #1: The Grateful Dead's 1995 Spring/Summer tour was a train wreck. Jerry Garcia, suffering from the after effects of his 1992 health issues, coupled with an ever increasing drug addiction, often was unable to rember lyrics or chords, sometimes turning off his instrument off during shows. Looking back, it's now easy to see the signs that pointed to his untimely passing in August 1995.  Beyond  Garcia's health, a host of other issues arose during the tour. Two fans fell from the upper deck at the June 24 show, lightning struck 3 fans before the June 25 show, the band was forced to cancel their July 3 show due to damage done to the venue the previous night, and 108 fans were injured when a structure collapsed during their July 6 concert. The only bright spot of this tragic run was the opeming acts.  Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Dave Matthews, the Black Crowes, Rusted Root and Dave Matthews all opened shows for the Dead during the 1995 tour.  So did The Band, who opened the final 2 shows of the tour in Chicago, which would also be the last 2 ever played by the Grateful Dead.  Perhaops its only fitting, as The Band and The Dead had shared the stage at 2 of the most legendary concerts in rock history, Woodstock in 1969 and Watkins Glen in 1973. This soundboard recording captures The Band leading in on July 8, 1995, 29 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony was another marked by both wonderous moments and lingering tensions.. Jerry Gacia decided to skip the Grateful Dead's induction, though the rest of the band did their best to make light of the situation by bringing along a life size cardboard cut out of their lead guitarist.  Robbie Robertson of The Band was in attendance, but Levon Helm decided not to show uo due to long runing issues with Robertson. Paul McCartney, who skipped The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to legal dispues with his former bandmates and Yoko Ono, was on hand to induct John Lennon, He even hugged Ono at the end of his induction speech in an emotional reconciliation. If  only McCartney had performed in tribute to Lennon, instead of the odd pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose who played Come Together. No one in attendance will ever forget Bono's tribute to the late Bob Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!" Perhaps the best musical moments of the night belonged to 2 men not inducted in 1994. Jeff Beck played a moving version of People Get Ready to honor Rod Stewart, who had to miss the ceremony due to an earthquake in Los Angeles.  And Chuck Berry strutted his stuff at the age of 68 on Roll Over Beethoven, backed by  Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 19, 1994, 3 decades ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

The Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.  Robbie Robertson, who had left the group after the Last Waltz in 1976, was present for the ceremony.  Unfortuantely, Levon Helm did not attend due to a dispute with Robertson.  Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Robertson played The Wait, backed by Eric Clapton on guitar, marking the first time Robbie had perfromed with his band mates since their 1976 farewell show. Clapton, by the way, had delivered The Band's induction speech.  We'll have the msuical highlights from the 1994 ceremony, including The Weight, later this month.

This soundboard recording captures 3/4 of the post Last Walt Band (Danko, Hudson, and Richard Manuel (once again Levon is missing!) at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe, on January 3, 1985, 39 years ago today.

The Band took the stage at Woodstock about 24 hours after The Grateful Dead did, at 10 pm on August 17, 1969, 54 years ago today.  the results were far differet, however, as Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Gath Hudson, and Rochard Maneul turned in an impressive 11 song set. as captured in this soundboard recording.  As robbie Robertson decribed it to Rolling Stone in 1989. “We played a slow, haunting set of mountain music. We lived up there, near Woodstock, and it seemed kind of appropriate from our point of view. We did songs like ‘Long Black Veil’ and ‘The Weight,’ and everything had a bit of reverence to it. Even the faster songs sounded almost religious.”

Twenty five years after the original festival, rock royalty came together once again at Woodstock in August 1994. That 25th anniversary concert was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. soundboard recording captures The Band, veterans of the original festival, playing a set on day 2 of Woodstock 94 on August 13, 1994, 29 years ago today, with help from Roger McGuinn, Bruce Hornsby, JHot Tuna, Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman!

The Allman Brothers also appeared at Woodstock 94, making for yet another major festival, along with Watkins Glen, where the bands both appeared. (by the way - throw in the fact that Bob Weir, who was with The Grateful Dead at Watkins Glen in 1973, sat in with The Band, and you have representation from all 3 of our featured bands this month at Woodstock 94. Three years earlier, Gregg Allman joined Rick Danko of The Band on stage at the Lone Star Roadhouse in New York City. In 2009, Levon Helm of The Band was one of the guests that appeared with the Allmans during theor 400th anniversary celebration at the Beacon in 2009.  Playing live togther, however, is not the only connections between The Band and The Allmans. For example, The Allmans played a cover of The Night The Drove Old Dixie Down for the album Endless Highway, a tribute to The Band. And,  according to legend, Duane Allman once said that Robbie Robertson of The Band was his favorite guitarist.

When it comes to The Band, it all began with Levon Helm.  He was the first, iin 1958, to join The Hawks, Ronnie Hawkin's backing band, later joined by Robbie Robertso, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levn Helm, in that group.  When they split with Hawkins in 1964, they became Levon & The Hawks, eventually serving as Bob Dylan's backing band.  Levon was there when they became The Band in 1968 and released their classic debut album, Music From Big Pink.  He played at the farewell concert, the legedary LLast Wlat in 1976, and was instrumental in rformeing the group, sans Robertson, in 1983. Levon stayed until The Band said farewell for the 2nd time in 1999, but then pursued a solo career.  He made music unril cancer took him from us in 29012.  Thsi sounbaord recording captures Levon out fron of his own band, 4 yrars beofre h e leftthis earth, at the Newport Folk Festival on August 3, 2008, 15 years ago today.

We brought you the Dead at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City earlier today to kick off the month, now we bring you The Band's opening set from the very same day, August 1, 1973, 50 years ago this very day. The Band's performance, as captured in this soundboard recording, probably surpasses their set at Watkins Glenn in both quality and intensity.  By the, It's amazing how many great shows took place at the now torn down Roosevelt Stadium.  In addition to The Dead and The Band,  The Allman Brothers, CSNY, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, Yes and The Eagle, just to name a few, also played legendary concerts at that venue.

By rhe way, in addition to touring together in 1973, The Grateful Dead and the Band have numerous other connections. Bpth played at Woodstock in August 1969, sets we will bring you later this month. In the summer of 1970, The Dead and The Band, along with Janis Joplin and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, participated in the Festival Express, a train tour across Canada that was detailed in a 2003 documentary film. In the 1990’s, Rick Danko of The Band sat in with The Dead during their 3rd set on December 31, 1983, while all the members of The Band joined the Dead for the encore on June 21, 1984. The Dead added The Band tune the Weight to their set lists in the 1990s, often playing the song as an encore. Moreover, After they reformed in 1983, sans Robbie Robertson, The Band served as the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead on about a half dozen occasions, including what turned out to be the Dead’s final show on July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field in Chicago, just a month before Jerry Garcia’s death. And fear not - we'll get to the connections between the Allmans and The Band later this month!

1970s - #6: No concert event in the US has ever drawn more fans than the 600,000 or so that turned out on July 28, 1973, a half century ago today ago this very day, for The Summer Jam at the Watkins Glen Race Course. They arrived to see 3 of the great North American rock bands of all time – The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. Despite the heat, rain, mud and general difficult conditions, the enormous crowd was not disappointed as the 3 bands played incredible sets. The Grateful Dead performed first, playing two long sets that lasted almost 4 hours. The Band followed the Dead with one two-hour set, however, their performance was cut in half by a drenching thunderstorm, in a scene again reminiscent of Woodstock. During the storm, keyboardist Garth Hudson played his signature organ improvisation ,The Genetic Method. When the rain finally let up, the full Band joined Hudson on stage, and segued into Chest Fever. Then, the Allman Brothers Band performed for three hours, playing almost all of their classics. Following the Allmans' second set, members of all 3 groups joined on stage for an hour encore jam. The encore featured spirited renditions of Not Fade Away, Mountain Jam, and Johnny B. Goode. For more details on this historic show, including incredible pictures, go here. In honor of this amazing event we have all sorts of goodies for you, The traduional link includes not only the entire show - some soundboard, some audience recordings - but also the soundchecks from the prior day. Then we have a link to additioanl sources for The Allmans and the Band's sets from both days plus another link for addional soirces for the Dead's performances from both days.  Some dstuff may be repeated across the 4 links, but I erred on the side of more rather than less.

1980s -#4: Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976. The Last Waltz. A concert, an album, a movie, an event, an ending. The last performance by The Band. For 7 years, it really did appear as if The Band truly had left the stage for good. Then in 1983, 4 of the 5 original members - Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm - decided to again perform together. While Robbie Robertson remained apart from his former mates, The Band was back. This TV soundboard recording captures one of the earliest shows of their reunion tour, from Vancouver, on July 18, 1983, 4 decades ago today.

For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, 1994 proved to be a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. This soundboard recording captures The Band during that historic year, at the Nattjazz Festival in Norway, on May 27, 1994, 29 years ago today.
