At Woodstock on August 17, 1969, Joe Cocker did what others could only dream of, namely take a tune by the most famous and arguably greatest rock band of all time and make it his very own. Cocker closed his set with a cover of The Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, turning Ringo's sing along into a "gospel-flavored soulful spectacle and painting Joe as its mad maestro." Cocker’s recorded version of the song went on to hit #1 on the UK charts, was used as the theme song for hit TV show The Wonder Years, and is ranked as one of the greatest cover versions of all time, up there with Jimi's rendition of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower.

Twenty five years later, as captured in this soundboard recording, Cocker was on stage at the 25th anniversary concert celebrating the Woodstock Festival, on August 13, 1994, 3 decades ago this very day. Originally scheduled for August 13 and 14, Woodstock 1994 was billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12.  Stop back at 4 pm tomorrow for another Woodstock veteran performing at the 25th anniversary show!

The festival played its final year in Central Park in 1980, after complaints about noise from folks living in the expensive apartments in the area.  In 1981, the festival moved to Pier 84, next to where the Intrepid is docked. Miller took over sponsorship in 1983 until the series ended in 1988. The line up that final year in the park,  included Peter Gabriel, Jefferson Starship, Ian Hunter, Joe Jackson, Eddie Money, Pat Benatar, BB King, the Ramones, Hall and Oates, The B52s, The Pretenders and Joe Cocker.  This FM Broadcast captures Joe's set on July 12, 1980, 40 years ago today.

A.R.M.S. Concert - 1983-11-28 - Dallas, TX (HQ AUD)

A.R.M.S. Concerts 1983 - Back to Back - #1: Stricken by multiple sclerosis, Ronnie Lance, the ex-bassist for both the Small Faces and Faces, organized a charity concert the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 20, 1983 to raise money to combat the disease. The show featured a star-studded line-up of British musicians, including Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Andy Fairweather Low, Bill Wyman, Kenny Jones and Charlie Watts. Lane appeared at the end of the show to thank the audience and the musicians, then took the  vocals on the closing tune, Goodnight Irene. The concert marked the first time Clapton, Beck and Page, each a former lead guitarist for The Yardbirds, performed together on stage. That initial concert was so successful that it spawned 9 additional shows, all in the US.  Winwood could not make those shows, so Joe Cocker  took his place. This high quality audience recording captures the first US date, in Dallas, on November 28, 1983, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this set.  NOTE - FULL DISCLOSURE - the sound on these 2 ARMS shows is a bit below our normal quality standards here at So Many Roads, but the concerts are so historic, and fit perfectly with our theme, that we decided to post them.

In April 1967, Dave Mason joined Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form Traffic.  As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967, but by that time Mason had left the band. He then returned in the middle of recording their follow up disc in 1968. After the band broke up and reformed, Mason rejoined for a brief period in 1971, only to depart the band once again soon after. This FM broadcast captures Mason over 2 decades after the Summer Of Love, during the height of his success as a solo artist, on June 2, 1979, 38 years ago today. He's joined  by some very special friends, including 2 veterans from 1967, Stephen Stills and Joe Cocker. Cocker sings lead on Feeling Alright, a song originally written by Mason, and recorded by Traffic!

EC 1975 #1: In March 1975, Clapton had released the album There’s One in Every Crowd, the follow up to his chart topping disc 461 Ocean Boulevard. Unfortunately, EC’s growing dependence on alcohol made recording the album difficult. As a result, There’s One in Every Crowd didn’t match the quality of its predecessor. The disc only rose to #21 in the Billboard album charts and failed to yield any singles that charted. Despite the album’s lack of commercial success, EC spent most of the year on the road in support of it. He spent April in Australia, his first trip to the Land Down Under, and October in Japan, in between touring the US from June to August. This soundboard recording captures EC on August 174, 1975, 4 decades ago this very day.  Download thisone, then stop back on August 17 for part 2 of this Double Shot.

Back on December 22, 2014, rock lost a legend, when Joe Cocker passed away at the age of 70. A veteran of Woodstock, Cocker did what few thought possible - cover Beatle songs and make them sound like his own. His versions of With A Little Help From My Friends and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window are standards for how to cover a tune the right way. Cocker had 3 top 10 hits in the US, the Letter at #7, You are So Beautiful and #5 and Up Where We Belong, his duet with with Jennifer Warnes, that went to #1. By the way, if you follow JustDave’s blog, you’ll know that he sang You Are So Beautiful to his lovely wife Rosebud when he proposed to her! In memory of and tribute to the late great Joe Cocker, we bring you this soundboard recording of his concert from February 15, 1995, 2 decades ago today.
