2003: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, Joan Osborne, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. This version of Phil & Friends, as captured in this soundboard recording from Philadelphia on November 30, 2003, 14 years ago today, includes 3 more rock legends - John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring. To top it off, two of Phil' former Grateful Dead band mates, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, stopped by help him close out the first set. \

1976: The mid 1970s was the high water mark for Southern Rock. One of the many genres of rock music that emerged during the 1970s was Southern Rock. While the Allman Brothers were the clear leaders in the rise of Southern Rock, other artists such as Charlie Daniels, The Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB) also thrived during the 1970s. The MTB released 8 albums in the 1970's, and all but one made the top 40 on the Billboard charts. They released their highest charting album, Searching For A Rainbow, in August 1975. The disc went to #15, and included the single Fire On The Mountain, which climbed to #38 on the charts. Only the single Heard It In A Love Song, which went to #14 in 1977, would perform better than Fire On The Mountain. In late 1976, the MTB made its first foray outside the United States, going on tour in Europe. Lead singer Doug Gray  recalled that "We were just a bunch of young hillbilly kids who had no idea what to expect, but let me tell you, our European fans made us feel like we were right at home. This was one of the most memorable tours in the history of the Marshall Tucker Band. I’ll never forget it.” This soundboard recording captures the band during that first European Tour, in England, on November 29, 1976, 41 years ago today.

The Fillmore shows from early in this run have circulated pretty extensively and are fairly easy to find on the web. So, I decided to bring you something a little more rare, a high quality audience recording (Geetatz rates the sound quality as 5 out of 6) from EC's show at Irving Plaza in New York on November 27, 1994, 23 years ago today.

1971:  The first 2 years of the decade of the 1970s produced one success after another for Leon Russell. In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan in including Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece., both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh.  He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell leased 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November.  This soundboard recording captures Leon near the end of those incredibly productive 2 years, in Stockholm on November 26, 1971, 47 years ago today.

1968: In August 1968, Cream released the double album, Wheels of Fire, which went to the top of the charts in the US and reached the #3 position in the UK. The album included soon to be classics such as White Room and Born Under A Bad Sign, as well as an incredible live version of Crossroads. Despite the album’s commercial and critical success, Cream was on its last legs as a band. Lead guitarist Eric Clapton had grown tired of the psychedelic jamming that become Cream’s trademark and wanted to go in a new direction. He was heavily influenced at the time by The Band’s debut album, Music From Big Pink, with its simpler approach to songs that drew from such genres as folk, country and blues. Clapton was also tired of playing peace maker between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. With all 3 members in agreement that the end had come, Cream launched a farewell tour, which consisted of 22 shows at 19 venues in the US between in October and November 1968, as well two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This soundboard recording captures one of those 2 RAH shows, on November 26, 1968, 49 years ago this very day.

1977: For the Grateful Dead, 1977 may just have been the most magical year of their long strange trip. From The legendary May 8 Barton Hall show that most consider the best Dead show ever, to the incredible September 3 Englistown NJ festival, to the under the radar October 29 performance in DeKalb, the Dead were on fire all year long.  The band, a year removed from their 1974 to 1976 retirement, and fueled by new album, Terrapin Station, filled with songs that would become mainstays of their set lists, soared ro heights never quite seen before. And Terrapin Nation, as Deadheads that year were sometimes coined in a cute play of words from the album title, reaped the benefits. Those magical moments extended to Jerry Garcia's solo performances as well. A perfect example is this excellent audience recording (taped by Jerry Moore) of Jerry's performance in Waterbury on November 23, 1977, 4 decades ago this very day.

Happy Thanksgiving

A early Happy Thanksgiving wish to everyone! Hope everyone has a wonderful day tomorrow and enjoys Family, Friends, Food and Football.

And please, on a day of being grateful for all that you have, don't forget those who are not so fortunate. Do what you can to help them as well - a great way to start is by making a donation to Hungerthon, a cause long supported by many of the rock artists we feature here at So Many Roads!

His concert schedule increased somewhat in 2009, with a short 10 date summer tour in the US followed by an even shorter, 8 night European run in December. Finally, in March 2010, Sir Paul launched the Up and Coming Tour, a play on words on the title of his hit single Coming Up, which would encompass 40 shows in North America, South America and Europe and stretch well into 2011. Elton John - 1970-11-21 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

1970 -  In late August 1970, Elton John made his first visit to the US, headlining at the Troubador Club in Los Angeles. His dynamic live shows captivated critics and word spread quickly across the country about the latest rock import from London. From November 12 to 15, Elton led in for the Kinks for 4 nights at the Fillmore West. Less than a week later, he was the lead-in for Leon Russell for 2 nights at The Fillmore East on November 20 and 21. In between, he played a live set at A&R Studios in New York, which was broadcast live by WNEW-FM. That show further cemented his reputation for delivering incredible live performances. In fact, according to WNEW’s Dave Herman, Elton cut his hand at some point during the performance, and by the end of the show, his piano keyboard was covered with blood. The performance was eventually released as a live album, fittingly titled 11-17-70, but of course in typical record company fashion, only included 6 of the 13 tracks that Elton played. Fortunately, soundboard recordings of his Fillmore shows are available to present a more complete picture of his live concerts at the time. This soundboard recording captures Elton on November 21, 1970, 47 years ago today at the Fillmore West .  The stint leading in for Leon Russell led to the duo The forging a bond that 4 decades later resulted in the album, The Union. For more details on that saga, see this post. The run of shows at the 2 Fillmores, coupled with a live broadcast on 11-17-1970 by WNEW-FM of Elton live from A&R Studios in New York, helped firmly establish Elton as an up and coming talent. Yet, no one could have imagined at the time that within 5 years, he would be rock’s biggest star. Download this one to hear Elton long before he would be dubbed “Captain Fantastic”.

1984: In October 1984, U2 released their 4th studio album, entitled The Unforgettable Fire. It would become a landmark disc for the band, as they overtly moved to change their musical style and direction. They separated from long-time producer Steve Lillywhite, and recruited in his place, Brian Eno. In place of the overt rockers from the War Album, were richer, more layer tunes, with lyrics that were more subtle, more open to interpretation. The disc received mixed reviews, as critics split over whether the U2’s change of direction was a success. The disc was without a doubt, however, a commercial success, reaching #12 on the Billboard charts while climbing all the way to the top spot in the UK. In addition, U2’s tour in support of the album found the band playing larger, indoor arenas. Moreover, their performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, would transform them into international superstars. This soundboard recording captures U2 on November 21, 1984, 33 years ago today, near the start of the first European Leg of the tour that would propel them to stardom.

Support Why Hunger

If you are enjoying our 50 year retrospective here at So Many Roads this month, then I ask you to do one thing - Please send a donation to Why Hunger.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we tend to think of feasts, food, family and friends. But for many in this country and across the world, food isn't a given. HUNGER remains one of the greatest problems across the globe.

WhyHunger was founded in 1975 by the late musician Harry Chapin and Radio DJ Bill Ayres on the fundamental belief that access to nutritious food is a human right and hunger is a solvable problem in a world of abundance. What began as a simple commitment between two friends to make a difference has grown into a global non-profit, celebrating over 40 years of steadfast support in building a broad-base social movement led by the grassroots to change the systems, policies and institutions that perpetuate hunger and poverty in our world.

I grew up listening to the Hungerthon campaigns on WNEW-FM as a kid. It made lasting impression on me, as artists such as CSNY, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead and so many more came together to raise money to fight hunger.  Rock and roll has played a vital role in supporting this endeavor to end hunger, so if you enjoy the music we post here, please take a moment and donate.

Thanks in advance for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Grateful Dead -  1985-11-20 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

1985: In 1985, The Grateful Dead celebrated 20 years together, dating back to their early days as the Warlocks. Dead Heads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 1980s, especially during the Spring tour. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1980, 1982 or 1989. Moreover, the 2nd half of 1985 was difficult period for the band, as Jerry Garcia’s heroin addiction began to consume the guitarist. This soundboard recording captures thee Dead near the end of that turbulent year, on November 20, 1985, 32 years ago today, in Oakland,  right across the bay from them hometown of San Francisco.

1967:  On September 18, 1967, The Beach Boys released their 12th studio album, entitled Smiley Smile. Almost 16 months had passed since their last release, the now legendary album Pet Sounds. As we all now know, Smiley Smile was neither the album the band had hoped to release nor the disc the public expected. Brian Wilson suffered a mental breakdown attempting to record Smile, an album that he hoped would match the work done by the Beatles on Rubber Soul and Revolver. He also drove a huge wedge between himself and the other band members, especially Mike Love, who felt the new music was far too complex and would alienate the group's core audience. Eventually, Smile was shelved, and over the next 40 years would become the most legendary unreleased album in rock history. It's replacement, Smiley Smile, would only reach #41 on the Billboard charts, and Brian Wilson would withdraw from the band soon after its release. So, when the Beach Boys launched their 5th annual Thanksgiving tour in November, Brian did not accompany the band. In addition, for the first time, the Beach Boys used backing musicians while on the road,, including Daryl Dragon on piano, who would later go on to fame as the Captain, in the Captain and Tennile! The tour also featured 2 very interesting lead in bands, the Buffalo Springfield and the Strawberry Alarm Clock. This soundboard recording captures the Beach Boys on November 19, 1967, 5 decades ago this very day,, in Washington DC near the start of that Thanksgiving tour.

Most of the concerts were held on college campuses, such as Purdue, Michigan, Lehigh, Northwestern and Duquesne, jsut to name a few.  On November 17, 2000, 17 years ago today, Dylan brought the tour to my alma mater, Princeton, as captured in this high quality audience recording.  Tickets were just $12 for seniors, $17 for other undergrads and $25 for faculty, staff and alumni.  The show was held in Dillon Gym, which holds just about 2000 people. The larger gym on campus, Jadwin, has been off limits to concerts ever since the November 1, 1978 Springsteen concert.  At that show, fans standing on chairs put thousands of pock mocks into the Jadwin basketball court causing thousands in damage as the hardwood floor needed to be completely refinished!

1983: In 1983, Rick Derringer released his 5th studio album, entitled Good Dirty Fun.  He toured in support of he disc, including this show from November 16, 1982, 35 years ago today, at the Agora in Cleveland as captured in this FM broadcast. ,But Derringer's album isn't the reason for this post. No, we choose this show for the following 3 reasons: first, we needed something from 1983! Second, we neeeded something for November 16 is keeping with our this day in history theme,  And third and most importanly, becuase it features Hang On Sloopy. The tune, recorded by Derringer when he was just 17 in 1965 while with the McCoys, is one of my guilty pleasures. The song actually went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but was knocked out of the top spot after just once week by a little known tune from a relatively obscure band - Yesterday by The Beatles! I actually heard the  late, great Tom Petty play Hang On Sloopy live just  a few months prior to this Derringer show, on April 1 1983  during a show at the Byrne Arena. By the way, Rick also breaks ou a mean version of Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo!

1996: In the early part of 1996, The Black Crowes began work on their 4th album which would be entitled Three Snakes and One Charm. The disc was recorded at a rented home in Atlanta, where the band took up residence for several months to work together on the album. The band kicked off their world tour in support of the album on July 5 in Burbank, 3 weeks prior to the disc's official release. The album climbed to #15 on the Billboard charts and received 3 star reviews from both Rolling Stone and All Music. As part of the promotional efforts in support of Three Snakes, the Crowes appeared on the VH1 program Storytellers. The show was relatively new at the time, with each episode capturing artists performing in front of a small and intimate live audience, telling stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The Black Crowes' installment was just the fifth in the series, which eventually comprised 87 episodes over its original run. This soundboard recording captures the band in Germany in support of the Three Snakes album, on November 15, 1996, 2 decades ago this very day.

1990:  As long time readers of So Many Roads know well, the period from 1989 to 1991 featured some Grateful Dead's, and Jerry Garcia's, finest performances since their peak in the 1970s. The number of official releases from that period is almost too numerous too count, including the full Spring tour from 1990, only the 2nd tour, after Europe 72, to be released in its entirety. Jerry's solo effort during this time were just as strong, with 4 shows from fall 1989 and 2 from fall 1991 having been officially released.  The live album, Jerry Garcia Band captures highlights from Jerry's 1990 solo shows, but we're still waiting for an official release of a complete show from that year.To make up for that, we'll bring you this soundboard recording from November 15, 1991, 26 years ago today, from Los Angeles.
