1986: Incredibly, for a concert featuring Mike Finnigan, CSN, George Thorogood , and John Fogerty, very little information exists on line about this show.  The benefit, which was held on Veterans Day,  was sponored by a student organization at Univerity Of Kansas. Student organizer Craig Kruege explained that "We wanted to help the Vietnam vets and do our little part to honor them and we thought this would be the most appropriate way - youth helping youth". All proceeds went toward scholarships for the children of Vietnam vets. This FM broadcast captures the benefit show in its entirety, from November 11, 1986, 38 years ago today.  And please take a momwnt toiday to honor all those who have served in the miltary protecting our freedoms.

John Fogerty, of course, played Woodstock as the front man for Creedence Clearwater Revival, though you might never know that if you just listened to the original soundtrack or watched the first releases of the documentary film. Creedenece doesn't appear in either, CCR didn't take the stage until well after midnight, after a long set by the Grateful Dead that was plagued by equipment issues and some "over indulgence" by the band. By that time, the crowd was weary while the sound issues and technical problems continued. Fogerty was unhappy with the situation and CCR'ss performance, so he barred the use of any of their set from either the original movie or soundtrack.

Almost 28 years after Woodstock, on May 20, 1997, Fogerty released the album Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc climbed to #37 on the Billboard charts and certified gold. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review and in 1998, it won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. After years out of the spotlight, John Fogerty was back. He went on tour in support of the album the same month it was released. In December 1997, he recorded a live album, Premonition, then continued to tour well into 1998 in support of both discs. This FM broadcast captures Fogerty in New York at the Hard Rock Cafe on August 3, 1997, 23 years ago today, promoting his new disc on national radio, during the early part of his tour.

The first Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremonyy, held in 1986, featured one legendary inductee after the next.  Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fat Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis - everyone a no brainer.  The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrtae their achievement.  Those still with us, however, such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, showed why, in the words of Neil Young, "rock & roll will never die", as they led all star jams on such classics as Roll Over Beethoven, Reelin' & Rockin', and Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 23, 1986, 38 yeArs ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below:

The 2nd Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1987 featured a gigantic list of inductees who spanned the gamut from 1950's rock to blues to soul and more. Aretha Franklin became the first women inducted, though sadly the Queen Of Soul did not attend. BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, 3 blues legends, took their rightful place in the hall as did soulful legends Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson. Early legends such as Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson and Bill Haley, also were part of the class of 1987. Musical moments included Orbison dueting with Bruce Springsteen on Pretty Woman, Carl Perkins backed by Keith Richards and BB King on Blue Suede Shoes, and Smokey Robinson leading an all star jam on Going To A Go Go.

The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class was one for the ages -  The Beach Boys, The Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr. and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcended any tension that may have still lingered. George and Ringo took the stage for a rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, backed by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger,  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone, supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.  Elton John played a medley of 1950s tunes and Fogerty sang Born On The Bayou. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

The biggst act inducted at the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall of fame ceremony was clearly The Who, who played a 3 song set. But some of the biggest moments belonged to 2 on stage reunions that some speculated might not happen. The original Four Seasons appeared together for the first time since 1970.  And Simon & Garfunkel reunited to play 2 tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. One other note - the hall got one right by inducting Bobby Darin, one of the great voices of all time (and one of my favorite singers).

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 17, 1990, 34 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

The 1991 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony took place just as the Persian Gulf War started, putting a damper on the evening's festivties. Perhaps then, it was fitting that The Byrds, including David Crosby, reunited that night for their induction, singing 3 songs including Turn, Turn Tiu, Turn, with its so appropriate line, "a time for peace, I swear its not too late."

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 16, 1991, 33 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

The 1993 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the first one not held in New York at the Waldorf Astoria, could be described by borrowing from Charles Dickens - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. "  On the bright side, all 3 members of Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce - showed up and played together for the first time since 1968. In addition, the suriving members of The Doors were all present, and played 3 songs with Eddie Vedder on vocals.  On the downside, Van Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the homor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  Far worse, while all 4 members of Creedence were in attendance for their induction, John Foegerty refused to play with them, continuing the 20 year old feud that effectively destroyed the band.  Instead, he was backed by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on 3 CCR tunes.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 12, 1993, 31 years ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonye could be described in the words of Charles Dickens:   "it was the best of times, it was the wiorst of times."  The list of inductees was unparellelled - The Beach Boys, the Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr.  and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on I Can't Get No Satisfaction.  This soundboard recording catures all those historic moments, from the Waldorf Astoria on Jnauary 20, 1988, 35 years ago today.  By the way, this article ranks all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musical performances - the 1988 show came in 4th, behind only the 2004, 1986 and 1992 jam sessions.

In 1977, Dennis Erokan, publisher of Bay Area Music magazine, founded the Bammies, of Bay Area Music Awards, designed to recognize the best musicians and musical performances by San Francisco area bands. The Bammies ran for about 20 years, finally fizzling out in 1997. Each year's awards ceremony was highlighted by musical performances, and would inevitably end with everyone onstage together for a free-for-all jam session. This FM broadcast captures the Grateful Dead & friends at the 11 Annual Bammies on March 12, 1988, 33 years ago today. The Dead swept almost all the awards that night, on the heels of the commercial and critical success of the album In Teh Dark and the single Touch of Grey in 1987.

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! By the way, go here to read that brief speech in its entirety.
