Here's another one from an artist who has appeared at both Farm Aid and The Bridge School. Now, we tend to think of the music at Farm Aid in terms of its founders, songs about the heartland from artists such as Neil, Willie and Mellencamp. As we saw last month, however, the array of artists who have played Farm Aid over its near 30 year history represent every genre of rock. The Farm Aid show held in Tinley Park on October 3, 1998, 18 years ago today, is a perfect example of that diversity. This FM broadcast captures the King of Surf Rock, the leader of the Beach Boys himself, the legendary Brian Wilson, doing a solo set on behalf of America’s farmers. Brian also did his part for Neil's other charity, appearing at the Bridge School benefit on 3 occaisions, in 1999, 2006 and 2014.

As most rock fans know, the Beach Boys album Smile became legendary for never being released. In fact, the 1966 project, which was Brian Wilson’s attempt to create an American musical masterpiece that rivaled albums such as Revolver by the Beatles, almost destroyed the band. Brian Wilson became so consumed by the project that he suffered a mental breakdown. His band mates almost revolted against him as they felt the music was far too removed from their established sound. Smile was shelved and became the subject of decades of speculation and rumors. In 2003, however, Brian Wilson, after years of ignoring the work, decided to revisit the album, and complete it from memory. Even more shocking, he decided to go on tour in 2004 and play the newly completed version live. This FM broadcast brings you the entire Smile album taken from 2 nights at Carnegie Hall on October 12 and 13, 2004, 9 years ago today and tomorrow. Download this one to hear Brian play an album that took almost 40 years to finish!

Brian Wilson/ Bob Dylan Connections
  • Wilson and Dylan, along with 14 other rock greats including Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and U2, contributed songs, sung by an artist of their choice, to a benefit album called Heroes, designed to raise money for children in war torn areas.
  • Brian recorded a duet with Bob Dylan back in the eighties on a song written by Wilson called The Spirit Of Rock And Roll.
