Between 1966 and 1991, the Grateful Dead played on New Year's Eve on 22 occaisions, with a run on 16 straight years between 1976 and 1991. Every one of those shows was in the Bay Area, except for 1969, when they played in Boston! The 1984 New Year's Eve show, as captured in this soundboard recording from December 31, 1984, 4 decades ago today, would be the last one in the city of San Francisco.  All future December 31 concerts were held in Oakland. This one was broadcast nationally on the radio, and I remember racing home from a party to try to tape it. I also still remember  - not always fondly - trying to time when to flip and/or change tapes, struggling to stay up to 3 am to catch the whole show (damn 3 hour time difference between NY and SF, hoping the radio signal didn't suddenly drop, and all the other horrors of the technology of the day.   All you have to do is download it!  Happy New Year!

NOTE - it appears that there were issues with the links.  I've replaced them as of 11 am on New Year's Day and even provided 4 options!  Hopefully you can now grab this great show!

On February 8, 2023, we lost a musical legend, Burt Bacharach who passed away at the age of 94.  Bacharach wrote some of the 1960s most popular romantic tunes, sung by artsist as varied as Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, The Carpenters, Tom Jones, BJ Thoma, and Herb Albert, just to name a few.  In the 1990s, he teamed with Elvis Costello for an album and a tour, even making an appearance alongside Costello playing What the World Needs Now Is Love in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. This sounboard recording broadcast captures Bacharach, along with Dionne Warwick,  in New York, on December 31, 1996, 28 years ago today.

On October 29, 1971, the Allman Brothers Band lost their co-founder, brother, guitarist, and spiritual leader in a tragic motorcycle accident. The death of Duane Allman could have crippled the band, but brother Greg, Dickie Betts, Berry Oakley Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and Berry Oakley soldiered on. They went back out on the road in 1972, with Oakley playing a major role in keeping the band together, both on and off the stage. Incredibly, Oakley, the new de facto leader of the band would meet the same fate as his predecessor. He also died in a motorcycle accident, in November 1972, just over a year after Duane, at an intersection 3 blocks from where the guitarist perished. Even that tragedy, however, could not stop the Allmans. Somehow, just over a month after that second tragedy, on December 31, 1972, 52 years ago today, they took the stage in New Orleans, as captured in this soundboard recording.  And they would continue to be a force in music the following year, releasing the single Ramblin’ Man which went to #2 on the Billboard charts.

In 1976, Elvis Presley slipped further into the drug addicted haze and paranoia which would claim his life the following year. The over weight singer had become a parody of himself. Marjorie Garber wrote that "in effect he had become Liberace. Even his fans were now middle-aged matrons and blue-haired grandmothers." Many of his long time fans, who had supported him during the decline that began in 1973, now turned on the King, appalled that they paid for tickets to concerts which had become grotesque displays of self indulgence. He left girl friend Linda Thompson to date 19 year old Ginger Alden. He fired 3 long time members of his inner circle, who responded by publishing a devastating tell all book that chronicled his drug use. Yet, he continued to sell out shows, and every now and then, glimmers of the King re-emerged. Presley ended 1976 with a 5 show mini tour that ran from December 27 to 31. At all 5 shows, he sounds healthy, strong and in excellent spirits, a far cry from performances earlier that year or those leading up to his tragic death the following year. Whether it was his recent weight loss or the start of his new relationship Alden, some force propelled Elvis to have one last hurrah on the waning days of 1976. This soundboard matrix recording captures him on night 4 of the tour, in Atlanta on December 30, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today. Note: I've also included the soundboard from the show in the downlaod, though it is focussed on the piano as opposed to the vocals. I think the matrix makes for a better listeing experience.

In September 1982, Billy Joel released his 8th studio album, entitled the Nylon Curtain.  The disc dealt with pessimism about attaining the American dream, with Joel explaining that "It was during the Reagan years, and the diminishing horizons in America at the time [meant that] all of a sudden you weren't going to be able to inherit [the kind of life] your old man had."  The album peaked at #7 on the Billboard charts, selling well over 2 million copies, and was nominated for a Grammy for Album Of The Year. This soundboard recording captures Joel on tour in support of the album, on his home turf in Long Island, on December 29, 1982, 2 years ago today.

Despite the star studded cast, the album did not sell well and received less than stellar reviews, with Robert Cristgau, for example, grading it as a C minus. That didn't stop Crosby from hitting the road in support of the disc. This soundboard recording captures him in Hawaii on December 28, 1993, 31 years ago today  He gets some help near the end of the set from 2 of his Thousand Roads collaborators, Graham Nash and Russ Kunkel, as well as from his opening act, Nicolette Larson.

The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows during the fall/winter of 1970 would be no exception. This soundboard recording captures Weir with Kingfish on December 26, 1984, 40 years ago today, at the Stone in San Francisco.  Bill Kreutzmann and Merl Saunders also sit in. Of note, the tape has a brief set from George Thorogood between the two by Kingfish, but it may not be from this date.  According to the GDsets.com site, the Thorogood appearance came on October 26 (not December 26) at the same venue. With some encouragement from their new label, the band changed artistic direction, relinquishing the theatrics of their previous albums to return to their roots. They eliminated the brass section and back up singers, returning the group to a 5 piece rock band. The new stripped down line up released its first album, Sleepwalker, on February 12, 1977. The disc, which in addition to the title track featured such soon to be Kink's classics as Jukebox Music, Life Goes On, and Life On The Road, went to #21 on the Billboard charts, the band's first commercial success in almost 7 years. Plant explained the album as folllows: "From the very beginning of this project, around January 1991, right after the Manic Nirvana tour, I knew what I was going to do: go back into my past, listening to [Moby] Grape, the [Jefferson] Airplane, Tim Hardin, Quicksilver, Traffic, and other turning-point artists in rock. These people were trying to tell the listener something...".  Perhaps looking to the past in creating Fate Of Nations was a sign, because the next venture he embarked on was a reunion with his Led Zeppelin bandmate Jimmy Page in 1994.  In any event, the FM broadcast captures Plant on tiur in suppiort of Fate Of Nations on December 20, 1993, 31 years go today, in Amsterdam.

As mentioned in numerous earlier posts, Jerry Garcia made a miraculous comeback in 1987, escaping death’s door when he finally emerged from a diabetic coma. After re-teaching himself to play guitar, Jerry rejoined the Grateful Dead and the band embarked on one of their best tours in years. The fall 1987 shows, especially those at Madison Square Garden, were especially memorable, with the 9-18-1987 show often being cited as one of the best of the decade. Soon after the fall tour ended, Garcia embarked on a new venture. Jerry took up residence at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York’s Broadway district from October 15 to October 31.  Garcia played 18 concerts in 13 days, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set.  As the year came to a close, Garcia, along with Grateful Dead bandmate Bob Weir, and long time collaborator, bassist John Kahn, played an acoustic set at a benefit concert hosted by Joan Baez to raise funds to fight AIDs.   This soundboard recording captures their set that night, December 17.1987, 37 years ago today, with Joan sitting in for the 3 three songs.

In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic.  The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then,  in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This webcast recording captures McCartney on the final night in South America, in Brazil on December 16, 2023, just a year ago today.  By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first studio disc in over 3 years. The disc also marked a reconciliation between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who had been at odds over the future of the band. The album received strong critical reviews and climbed to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US and to #2 in the UK. The single Mixed Emotions, which addressed the woes between Mick and Keith, went to #5 on the Billboard charts. On August 31, the Stones launched a tour in support of the album, which would take them to the US for the first time in 7 years. The tour would eventually stretch to 115 dates on 3 continents. This soundboard recording captures the Stones during that tour, in Montreal, on December 13, 1989, 35 years ago today.

As I've mentioned earlier posts, the 2nd concert I ever attended was Hall & Oates on June 23, 1977 at the Garden State (now the PNC Bank) Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band near the start of that run of commercial success, on December 12, 1979, 45 years ago today, at the Bottom Line in New York,

20. So Lonely

The Police’s 1981 Ghost in the Machine album tour put them on the map as rock super stars. Their tour in support of that disc made them the first new wave/punk band to graduate from playing clubs to headlining at 20,000 seat arenas such as Madison Square Garden on New York, where I saw them January 22, 1982. The follow up album, Synchronicity, released in June 1983, was another blockbuster, going to number 1 on the US and UK charts, and winning the band a Grammy Award for best rock performance by a duo or group. The album spawned 4 top 20 singles: Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breathe You Take, which went to the #1 spot and stayed there for 8 weeks. Despite all that success (or maybe because of it?), the band was beginning to come apart. The album was recorded with each member of the band in a separate room, ostensibly for engineering reasons, but in hindsight it is apparent that the arrangement symbolized that the band was no longer a cohesive unit. Moreover, during the recording of Every Breath You Take, Sting and Andy Summers came to blows in the studio. When the band went on the road in July 1983 in support of the album, no one knew that it would be the final world tour for the band (with the exception of 3 shows in 1986) until 2007! This soundboard recording captures the band during that final 20th century tour, in Scotland on December 11, 1983, 41 years ago today.
