The Guess Who - 1975-04-15 - Winnipeg, Canada (FM)

As the Guess Who took the stage in Winnipeg on April 15, 1975, 45 years ago today, the band was just a few months away from the decade long run with Burton Cummings at the helm. While the band had reached its commercial peak in 1969-1970, scoring 6 top 10 singles, including 2 #1's (American Woman and No Sugar Tonight), from 1971 to 1974 they had 4 studio albums and 11 singles reach the Billboard Top 100.  In addition, right before going on tour in April 1975, they had just finished recording the album Power In The Music which would be released in July and go to #87.  Despite that success, after a decade fronting the band, Cummings decided in October 1975 to try his hand as a solo artist. This FM broadcast, therefore, captures one of his last shows with the Guess Who prior to their brief reunion in 1983.

According to some sources, The Guess Who were invited to play at Woodstock but were unable to  change their tour plans.  This is somewhat corroborated by a Facebook post from Burton Cummings that laments not making the festival, but having fond memories of playing Seattle Pop along with Led Zeppelin and The Doors, 2 other bands that skipped Woodstock!

This soundboard recording captures The Guess Who just about a year after Woodstock, in New York on August 5, 1970, 49 years ago today.

Depending on how you look at it, the Guess Who had 3 debut albums in 1960s:
  1. Shaking All Over released in 1965 and credited to Guess Who?/Chad Allan and the Expressions
  2. It’s Time released in 1966 and credited to The Guess Who?
  3. Wheatfield Soul released in 1968 and credited to The Guess Who.
The 3rd of those 3 discs is probably the one most familiar to fans, as it not only features Burton Cummings on lead vocal throughout, but also contains the band’s first big hit, These Eyes, which went to number 6 on the US Billboard charts. The band would score 5 more top 10 hits in the next 2 years, including two songs that climbed all the way to #1, American Woman and No Sugar Tonight. The Canadian band’s stay at the top, however, would not be long. Randy Bachman would leave the group before the start of 1971 and Burton Cummings would do likewise in 1975. This soundboard recording from May 6, 1974, 40 decades ago today, therefore, captures the Guess Who, near the end of their remarkable run of hit tunes.
