The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class was one for the ages -  The Beach Boys, The Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr. and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcended any tension that may have still lingered. George and Ringo took the stage for a rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, backed by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger,  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone, supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.  Elton John played a medley of 1950s tunes and Fogerty sang Born On The Bayou. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on January 20, 1989, 35 yesrs ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below:

George Harrison 1991 - Back To Back - #1: In December 1991, George Harrison launched the 2nd, and final, solo tour of his career. Unlike his first tour 17 years earlier in 1974, this time Harrison avoided the glare of the US media, playing only in Japan. Long time friend Eric Clapton went along with George on this short 12 show run, playing back up for Harrison, while also stepping out front for 4 of his own numbers each night. George plays a great mix of Beatle tunes and his own solo material. Moreover, hearing While My Guitar Gently Weeps live, with EC playing just as he did when the song was first recorded for the White Album, is a rare treat. Download this one , then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this set. This sometimes excellent, sometimes very good audience recording captures George and Eric in Tokyo on December 14, 1991, 32 years ago today. 11. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan & Bruce Springsteen
12. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Bruce Springsteen & Mick Jagger

The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony could be described in the words of Charles Dickens:   "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  The list of inductees was unparellelled - The Beach Boys, the Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr.  and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcnded any tension that may have still lingered. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on I Can't Get No Satisfaction.  This soundboard recording catures all those historic moments, from the Waldorf Astoria on Jnauary 20, 1988, 35 years ago today.  By the way, this article ranks all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musical performances - the 1988 show came in 4th, behind only the 2004, 1986 and 1992 jam sessions.

1969 - As discussed in several earlier posts here at So Many Roads, Eric Clapton quickly grew tired on being in Blind Faith. During that band's only tour in 1969, EC found himself spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett than he was with Winwood and Baker! Once the tour ended, EC left Blind Faith and joined up with Delaney & Bonnie. This soundboard recording finds EC on tour with Delaney & Bonnie on December 10, 1969, 52 years ago today! Also on stage is Clapton's good friend, George Harrison!

On April 6, 1992, 27 years ago today, George Harrison headlined his last concert, a gig at the Royal Albert Hall that featured special guests Ringo Starr, Gary Moore, Joe Walsh and son, Dhani Harrison. For George, it was his first performance in London in 23 years, since, I’m guessing, the Beatle’s legendary Rooftop Concert on January 30, 1969! This show was a fund raiser for the Natural Law Party, which was founded in the UK on March 15 1992 with the goal of “bringing innovative, scientifically proven solutions to the nation's problems”. The fact that the party was tied in to Transcendental Meditation probably made it very attractive to George. This website is about music, however, not politics. This HQ Audience Recording captures every note of this performance, the last time George would perform live with the exception of his appearance at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert (better know as “Bobfest” in the words of Neil Young) at Madison Square Garden in October 1992. Download this one to have this historic show as part of your collection.

1974: On November 2, 1974, George Harrison launched a major North American tour, becoming the first Beatle to tour solo on that continent! Billed As George Harrison and Friends, the concerts included segments by Tom Scott, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar. Unfortunately for George, the tour was problematic, to say the least. The former Beatle had blown out his voice completing the soon to be released album Dark Horse. He had vocal problems at many of the concerts, leading some critics to dub the shows the "Dark HOARSE" tour. Many fans also had issues with the concerts, growing weary of the long segments performed by Ravi Shankar. In addition, fans disliked that Harrison changed the lyrics and tempo of many of his better known songs, while leaving the classic Here Comes The Sun completely off the set list. All that said, this tour still holds a unique place in rock history, as it was the only time George toured in the US. Rumors abound that a formal release of film footage and concert tracks from that tour is in the works, but all that is still speculation. In the meantime, we'll have to make due with bootlegs from the tour. This post includes the only known soundboard recording from the tour, from November 12, 1974 in Los Angeles, 43 years ago today! Download this one and relive one of only 2 solo tours George ever embarked on, the other being his 1991 venture to Japan with Eric Clapton.

1987 - Three decades ago this very day, on February 19, 1987, what started out as a concert by Taj Mahal at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood, became an historic rock and roll event. Three fans in attendance leaped on stage and launched into an impromptu rock & roll jam session. Fans on stage would normally call for security, except in this case the 3 individuals happened to be Bob Dylan, fellow Wilbury George Harrison, and John Fogerty (who was never a Wilbury but would have fit in nicely). This was a jam session in the truest sense of the word. The 3 pulled out rock classics such as Midnight Hour, Johnny B Goode and Blue Suede Shoes. The audience requested Dylan’s Watching The River Flow, and they complied, except Harrison took lead vocals. All 3 legends shared a single microphone on the chorus to Hey Bo Diddley. Yet, as if that wasn’t enough, one more highlight may have topped every other moment of this performance. Dylan, who had never before met Fogerty, told John that he had better play a certain song or people would only remember Tina Turner’s version. Forgerty responded by saying “All right, I’m gonna do this for one reason – Bob Dylan asked me to do it” and broke into the opening notes of Proud Mary! As everyone knows, Fogerty had gone years without playing any Creedence tunes due to disputes with his record label.  Beginning with this show, CCR material would return full time to Fogerty’s live performances. This Soundboard + HQ audience recording captures every note of that historic night and is yet another must have for anyone’s collection.

1974 - A few years ago, I posted a soundboard recording of George Harrison’s November 12, 1974 concert in Los Angeles. That might be the only known soundboard tape available from that tour. Fortunately, plenty of audience recordings are available, and this one, from his November 26, 1974 show, 37 years ago today, is one of the best. The tape includes all the Harrison and Billy Preston tunes, but excludes all of the Ravi Shankar material, effectively dealing with one of the biggest complaints about the tour. Harrison fans at the time were quite unhappy with the length of Shankar’s portion of the show, feeling it took the spotlight away from the quiet Beatle. Obviously, this taper agreed with those complaints! Harrison’s vocal issues, which plagued him, throughout the tour, are also readily apparent upon listening to this show. That said, this one is definitely worth the download, if simply to hear George on his only solo tour of the United States.
