Brinsley Schwarz was a cult phenomena. Fronted by Nick Lowe and named after their lead guitarist, the band developed a rabid following in the UK and became the subject of legendary hype in the United States. The band was one leading lights of the pub rock movement in the UK, the predecessor to the punk and new wave revolution that would sweep rock later in the decade. Unfortunately, critical acclaim and loyal fans never did translate into chart success for Brinsley Schwarz and they would eventually disband in 1975. Their last album in 1974, however, served as a launching pad for yet another band that achieved legendary cult status. Dave Edmunds would produce that disc, and he would go on to partner with Lowe to form Rockpile! This rare FM broadcast captures Brinsley Schwarz on May 4, 1972, 47 years ago today in London.

Brinsley Schwarz was a cult phenomena. Fronted by Nick Lowe and named after their lead guitarist, the band developed a rabid following in the UK and became the subject of legendary hype in the United States.  Unfortunately, critical acclaim and loyal fans never did translate into chart success for Brinsley Schwarz and they would eventually disband in 1975. Their last album in 1974, however, served as a launching pad for another band that achieved legendary cult status. Dave Edmunds would produce that disc, and he would go on to partner with Lowe to form Rockpile! This rare soundboard recording captures BrinsleySchwarz on June 19, 1974, 42 years ago today, just about a month before the release of that final album. So, is Edmunds playing alongside The Brinsleys at this gig? The picture that accompanied this bootleg shows Lowe and Edmunds side by side on stage. Edmunds' 1975 album Subtle As A Flying Mallet lists some live tracks with Brinsley Schwarz, all from Cardiff, the location where this soundboard was recorded. I couldn't really tell from listening. Download it and see what you think.

The band Brinsley Schwarz, named after their lead guitrist and also featuring Nick Lowe, Billy Rankin, Bob Andrews and Ian Gomm was one of the leading lights of the pub rock movement in the UK, the predecessor to the punk and new wave revolution that would sweep rock later in the decade.  The band never took over commercially, despite a rabid fan base and strong critical reviews. This FM broadcast from June 18, 1971, 42 years ago today, captures the band a few months after the release of their 2nd album. Ten days later they would be on the bill at the 2nd Glastonbury Festival, one of the many support acts for headliners David Bowie and Traffic.
