GD 1991 - Back To Back - #2: As promised yesterday, here's the 2nd half of our Back To Back set featuring the Grateful Dead closing out 1991 on their home turf in Oakland,  This one is a sounsboard recording from December 31, 1991, 43 years ago today.  As the notes of Knocking on Heaven's Door faded, a long standing tradtion came to an end.  This would be the last time the Dead would ever play on New Year's Eve. With the passing of Bill Graham earlier that year, the man who had promoted, hosted and partcipated in these New Year's Extrvanganzas (Bill would always help ring in the New Year dressed in some ridiculous cosume!), The Dead decided to cease playing on December 31. Including this show, The Dead had played on New Year's Eve 22 times, with a run of 16 straight years from 1976 to 1991. Happy New Year!

GD 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  As the Dead took the stage in Oakland on December 31, 1991, 32 years ago today., more than just the calendar year 1991 was about to end. The 2 shows in our Back To Back set also mark the end of an incredble 3 year run that started back in July 1989. The list of officially released show from this period is impressive to say the least:
  • a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
  • the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • the Giants Stadium shows from June 16 and 17, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991
The period marked the last great sutained run of the band's long strange trip.  With the passing of long time manager Bil Graham in fall 1991, Bruce Hornsby leaving the band in early 1992, and Garcia's second major illness, also in 1992, the band was never again able to quite hit those heights. Download this soundboard recording, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back entry.

SSJ 1978 - Back To Back - #1: The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This soundboard recording caputures Soouthside during the height of their success, at the Capito;l Thetre on Passaic, NJ on Dece, ber 30, 1978, 45 uears ago today. Ratdog 2001 - Back To Back - #1:  During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir & Ratdog on December 26, 2001, 22 years ago today, in Las Vegas. Ronnie Spector 1989 - Back To Back - #1: In the early 1960s, the Ronettes, with Ronnie Spector as lead singer, scored numerous chart hits, including Be My Baby, Baby, I Love You, Walking In The rain and I Can Hear Music, just to name a few. The Ronettes also recorded 3 tracks for the album A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector - Frosty The Snoman, Sleigh Ride and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus> (Of Note - Darlene Love and The Crystals were also major contributors to the album). The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and was ranked #142 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 and 2012 lists of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. In 2019, Rolling Stone ranked it as the greatest Christmas album of all time. Ronnie's connection to that album continued to her death, as she often performed Christmas shows in New York clubs.  This excellent audience recording captures her doing exactly that at the early show at the Village Gate on December 22, 1989, 44 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back later today for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.
