Grateful Dead - 1981-12-31 - Oakland Auditorium (SBD)

Happy New Year! We ring in the year 2010 with none other than the Grateful Dead, a fitting selection since the band played almost every New Year's Eve from 1966 to 1991! Often those shows were broadcast on the radio nationwide! The first New Year's show I ever listened to, on WNEW-FM, of course, was 1978, the closing of Winterland in San Francisco, an amazing concert that has been released on both CD and DVD. Since I can't post that one, I selected this gem from 1981. The Dead play an acoustic set with Joan Baez, then follow with 3 electric sets -- almost 4 hours of music in all! Given that electric set 2 didn't start until midnight (a Dead tradition), folks didn't go home until the sun was beginning to rise on 1982. I can't think of a better way for this blog to start this new year! Be back posting on January 4, 2010 after taking a little break for the holiday weekend!

When Paul McCartney went on tour in 1989 for the first time since a very short Wings outing 10 years earlier, expectations ran high. Paul warmed up with 2 rehearsals at the London Playhouse, then he headed off to Europe. This was Paul’s first tour under his own name (previous solo tours were all booked as Wings) and the first one where he played a substantial number of Beatle tunes. He also featured numerous songs from his recently released and critically acclaimed album, Flowers In The Dirt, including My Brave Face, This One, Rough Ride, We Got Married, Put It There and Figure of Eight. While the new songs sounded good in concert, they weren’t the reason the tour sold out at almost every stop. Folks came to hear Paul recapture his Beatles days, and he did not disappoint. Over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle songs, including Yesterday, Let it Be and Hey Jude. This high quality audience recording captures Sir Paul in Inglewood on November 27, 1989, 20 years ago today. Macca was joined during the encores  by the one & only Stevie Wonder for Ebony & Ivory!

Welcome To "So Many Roads To Ease My Soul"

So Many Roads To Ease My Soul is a blog dedicated to classic rock concerts - live performances from The Beatles, CSNY, the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Elton John and more! You'll find primarily Soundboard and FM broadcast recordings at So Many Roads. Any audience recordings posted will either be high quality or capture a historic concert for which a soundboard simply isn't available. All shows will be MP3's. The post for every show will include full details, including date, location, set list, source and whether artwork is included. The download link will be below the set list. You'll also find a little bit of rock history (and some of my own concert experiences) in each post.

All material posted is believed to be commercially unavailable. I'll immediately remove any post if the band asks or if it turns out the show is available commercially.

I'll try to post a show or two a day. I'm new at this blogging stuff so bear with me if there are any glitches!

Enjoy the music. And support the bands by buying their CDs and attending their concerts.
