1985 - Yesterday we brought you Nick Lowe of Rockpile flying solo in 1985, so today its only fitting that we bring your Dave Edmunds doing like wise in the same year.  In late 1984, Edmunds released the album Riff Raff, once again collaborating with Jeff Lynne, formerly of ELO, as he had done on his 1983 album, Information. Unfortunately, the 2nd time around for Edmunds and Lynne was not quite as successful. Whereas Information had climbed to  #51 on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawned a top-40 single in "Slipping Away,  Riff Raff  made it to only #140, and the single Something About You failed to crack the Billboard Hot 100.  Nonetheless, Edmunds toured in support of the album, as captured in this soundboard recording from the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ on February 28, 1985, 32 years ago today.

Enjoy the tunz!

The first 3 times I saw Jerry Garcia, all in the late 1970s & early 1980s, his long time song writing  partner Robert Hunter served as his lead in band.  Hearing Hunter live is always a unique experience, as his take on the countless tunes he wrote with Jerry is often so different than how they sound when played by the Grateful Dead,  This soundboard recording capture's Hunter in Carlisle on February 26, 1983, 34 years ago today. Hunter’s set includes his version of Run For The Roses, a tune he and Jerry co-wrote around that time and which Garcia released on an album of the same name.Interestingly, while Hunter often served as Garcia's lead in act, on this night Jerry was 3000 miles away, playing a show in Palo Alto!

Bob Dylan with Tom Petty - 1986-02-24 - Sydney, Australia (SBD)

1986 - After having worked with Tom Petty at Farm Aid in September 1985, Bob Dylan spent much of 1986 on tour with Petty and the Heartbreakers serving as his back up band. That tour started on February 5, 1986 in New Zealand. Thee weeks later, on February 24, 1986, 31 years ago today, Dylan and Petty were in Sydney Australia as captured n this soundboard recording. Unlike the later shows in the United States, Petty and The Heartbreakers get less time in the spotlight in Australia, stepping out front on just 4 songs as opposed to the 8 tunes they played, for example, at the July Saratoga Springs show we posted here at So Many Roads a few years ago.. Dylan is in fine form throughout this performance, and plays more than just his hit tunes. Just one note, while the artwork says this is the Adalaide show, most sources agree believe it is from Sidney, on February 24. Whatever the venue, this is an outstanding soundboard recording that captures the unique collaboration between Dylan and Petty.

The March 1, 1980 concerts (I was at the early show) from the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ were so good that they were selected to be the first release in the Garcia Live series. When it was, just a few weeks later, it shot to the top of the Billboard charts, spending 7 weeks at number one between March and May 1982. 1987 - Three decades ago this very day, on February 19, 1987, what started out as a concert by Taj Mahal at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood, became an historic rock and roll event. Three fans in attendance leaped on stage and launched into an impromptu rock & roll jam session. Fans on stage would normally call for security, except in this case the 3 individuals happened to be Bob Dylan, fellow Wilbury George Harrison, and John Fogerty (who was never a Wilbury but would have fit in nicely). This was a jam session in the truest sense of the word. The 3 pulled out rock classics such as Midnight Hour, Johnny B Goode and Blue Suede Shoes. The audience requested Dylan’s Watching The River Flow, and they complied, except Harrison took lead vocals. All 3 legends shared a single microphone on the chorus to Hey Bo Diddley. Yet, as if that wasn’t enough, one more highlight may have topped every other moment of this performance. Dylan, who had never before met Fogerty, told John that he had better play a certain song or people would only remember Tina Turner’s version. Forgerty responded by saying “All right, I’m gonna do this for one reason – Bob Dylan asked me to do it” and broke into the opening notes of Proud Mary! As everyone knows, Fogerty had gone years without playing any Creedence tunes due to disputes with his record label.  Beginning with this show, CCR material would return full time to Fogerty’s live performances. This Soundboard + HQ audience recording captures every note of that historic night and is yet another must have for anyone’s collection.

1981 - Pink Floyd's monumental 1979 double album, The Wall, was a direct outgrowth of Roger Water's experiences during the band's 1977 World tour. As documented in numerous posts on this blog, Waters, during that tour, began to feel more and more alienated from his audience, which resulted in numerous incidents ranging from yelling obscenities to spitting in the face of a fan. The Wall focuses on themes of isolation and abandonment, telling the tale of Pink, a character based on Waters. When Pink Floyd decided to tour in support The Wall in 1980, the band spared no expense in ensuring that the theatrics, staging and sound quality would be unlike any concert ever before performed. The band spent over $1.5 million on lighting, sound equipment, props, etc. before they even played a concert. The shows would include the building of a giant wall across the stage, which would eventually be torn down as the show progressed. Due to the cost and effort involved in staging each individual concert, Pink Floyd only performed The Wall live 31 times in just 4 cities, in 1980 and 1981. Those 31 shows had an enormous impact on rock concerts, however, as noted by the NY Times in its March 2nd, 1980 edition. The Times wrote "The Wall show remains a milestone in rock history and there's no point in denying it. Never again will one be able to accept the technical clumsiness, distorted sound and meager visuals of most arena rock concerts as inevitable. The Wall will be the touchstone against which all future rock spectacles must be measured." This high quality audience recording captures Pink Floyd playing in Germany on February 18, 1981, 3 dozen years ago today. Perhaps it was no coincidence that The Wall tour would be the last with Roger Waters as a member of the band. Waters not only built a wall across the stage, but also one between himself and his fellow band mates.

The Police - 1981-02-13 - Auckland, New Zealand (FM)

1981 - Earlier this month we brought you The Police in 1984 at the height of the commercial and critical success.  Today, we step back a few years to 1981 as the band was trying to make the leap from new wave phenomenon to rock stardom. Between July 7 and August 7, 1980, The Police recorded their 3rd album, Zenyatta Moondatta, in a whirlwind series of sessions in The Netherlands. They had hoped to use Surrey Sound Studios in the UK as they had for their first 2 albums, but could not for tax reasons. The band was under intense pressure to finish the disc as they were embarking on a world tour in August. Drummer Stewart Copeland was quoted as saying "We had bitten off more than we could chew. ...we finished the album at 4 a.m. on the day we were starting our next world tour. We went to bed for a few hours and then traveled down to Belgium for the first gig. It was cutting it very fine." The album would be released in October, just about the time the band started the first North American leg of the tour. Although the band wasn't entirely happy with the album, Zenyatta Moondatta would climb to #5 on the Billboard charts in the US and reach the top spot in the UK. The Police stayed on the road in support of the disc until February 26, playing a total of 96 shows on 5 continents. This soundboard recording captures the band near the very end of the tour, on February 23, 1981, 3 dozen years ago this very day, in New Zealand.

1989 - As promised, heres the 3rd and final show the Dead played in Los Angeles in February 1989, this one featuring a guest appearance by Bob Dylan. As mentioned in numerous earlier posts, the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan toured together in 1987, which was just the start of a relationship between these 2 great artists that would continue to this day. The Grateful Dead, The Jerry Garcia Band, Ratdog (Weir's solo project) and all the post-Garcia incarnations of the Dead, would feature Dylan tunes as a regular part of their set list. Dylan would be the lead-in band for the Dead on their last tour in 1995, just months before Garcia would pass away. This soundboard recording from February 12, 1989, 28 years ago today, captures Dylan sitting in with the Dead for the 2nd set, not to mention Spencer Davis joining the band for the 1st set!

1989 - The Grateful Dead's Fall 1989 tour gets a host of attention and rightly so as the band was in peak form.  For example, on October 8 & 9, the band plays 2 shows in Hampton, VA billed as “Formerly The Warlocks”. For th0se shows, The Dead reached back into their song catalog and played some tunes that hadn't been in the set list for nearly 2 decades, including Attics of My Life, We Bid You Goodnight and Death Don’t Have No Mercy. Both shows have been officially released. A week after the Hampton shows, the Dead played another masterpiece for Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday, on October 16, 1989 ( I was there), another show which has been officially released as an album entitled, Nightfall of Diamonds.  The October 26 show has also been officially released, as part of the 30 Trips Around The Sun box set. Given how strong the Fall tour eas, folks sometimes forget that the band played well throughout 1989, with shows from April and July also being selected for official release.  Moreover, the year started out with 6 excellent shows in their home state of California, 3 in San Francisco on February 5, 6 and 7 followed by 3 in Los Angeles on February 19, 11 and 12.  We'll bring you all 3 LA shows, starting with this soundboard recording from night 1, on February 10, 1989, 28 years ago today.

1988 - When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing".  The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out.  In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few.  This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, on February 8, 1988,  29 years ago today.

1984 - During their almost year long world tour in 1983/84, The Police just might have been the biggest rock act in the world. On June 1, 1983, the band had released the album Synchronicity, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts, selling 8 million copies. The disc yielded 4 top 20 singles - Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breath You Take, which like the album, climbed all the way to #1. When the band toured in support of Synchronicity, they found they could fill 50,000 seat stadiums such as Shea in New York, the same venue the Beatles had filled some 2 decades prior. As a result, perhaps the band felt they had no more mountains to climb, as soon after, they would disband, spurred on in part by Sting's decision to release a solo disc. This excellent audience recording captures the band on their final tour until the 21st century, on February 8, 1984, 34 years ago today, in Williamsburg, VA.

09. One Night

1983 - That Eric Clapton was able to tour in 1983 was nothing short of miraculous, given his physical and emotional state just a year earlier. In January 1982, EC, having finally admitted he was an alcoholic, flew from London to Minneapolis to check into the Hazelden Treatment Center. On the flight, Clapton drank heavily out of fear he would never be able to drink again. Clapton is quoted in his autobiography as saying, "In the lowest moments of my life, the only reason I didn't commit suicide was that I knew I wouldn't be able to drink any more if I was dead. It was the only thing I thought was worth living for, and the idea that people were about to try and remove me from alcohol was so terrible that I drank and drank and drank, and they had to practically carry me into the clinic.” After being discharged, the doctors at Hazelden recommended that EC avoid any activities that would act as a trigger for his alcoholism. A few months after his discharge, Clapton began working on his next album, against the Hazelden doctors' orders. Working with Tom Dowd, Clapton produced the disc Money & Cigarettes, which he released in February 1983. The album’s memorable cover depicts Clapton, cigarette in hand, standing next to a melting Fender Stratocaster guitar. EC said he chose the album title and imagery "because, that's all I saw myself having left”. Despite less than stellar reviews for the album, the single I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart went to #18 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard captures EC on the 5th night of the tour in San Francisco on February 7, 1983, 34 years ago today.

Rockpile - 1980-02-06 - Liverpool, UK (SBD)

1980 - As promised earlier today, here's a soundboard recording of Rockpile in Liverpool on February 6, 1989, 37 years ago today. Unfortunately, the first year of the new decade spelt the end of the line for Rockpile after just 4 years together. Ironically, the end came at the very moment that the contractual obligations that once kept the band from recording together ceased being an obstacle. When Rockpile started touring together in 1976, its co-leaders, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, were signed to different record labels. That prevented the band from releasing an album under its own name. Instead, they were forced to release albums either under Lowe’s name, such as Jesus of Cool and Labor of Lust, or Edmund’s banner, such as Trax on Wax and Repeat When Necessary. In fact, Jesus of Cool and Heart of The City both featured the same version of the song heart of The City, but on the former album, the track featured Lowe’s lead vocals while on the latter, the record company dubbed in Edmund’s voice! When Edmunds finally fulfilled his contractual commitments in 1980, Rockpile was finally able to release an album. Unfortunately, the resulting disc, Seconds of Pleasure, while a solid effort, didn’t quite live up to the standard set by the earlier “solo” albums. It was the beginning of the end.  By 1981, tensions between Lowe and Edmunds led to Rockpile calling it quits.

1980 - Folks attending the Rockpile show on February 6, 1980, 37 years ago today, probably didn't expect much from the opening act, the unknown Horace Barlow Band. When thee group took the stage, however, the crowd got quite a surprise. Turned out that The Horace Barlow Band was in reality Elvis Costello and The Attractions, working under an assumed name. Elvis wanted to to test out some new material from his upcoming album, Get Happy, album without the pressure of an audience of reviewers.  Download this soundboard recording then come back later today for Rockpile's set!
