1969 - For the Grateful Dead, the year 1969 saw them take the live performances deep into space, displaying a level of pyschedelic improvisation that had never been seen before, and has rarely been matched since. In reviewing the album Live Dead, which was band released in November 1969, the and featured their performances at  the Fillmore West in late February/early March 1969, famed critic Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded."  Yet, as the year cane to a close the Dead were beginning to show their fans the next phase of their development as band. Songs such as Uncle John's Band, Dire Wolf, Black Peter and Cumberland Blues, which would appear on the 1970s disc Workingman's Dead, began to appear in the band's set list.  Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, also released in 1970, formed a one-two punch that showcased tehe band's Americana and folk roots, an almost 180 turn from the psychedelic 1960s.  This soundboard recording captures that transition in full bllom, in Boston on December 31, 1969, 52 years ago today.  One other historical note about this show - the Dead played 22 concerts in New Year's Eve - this is the only one not to take place in either San Francisco or Oakland!

1969 - Soon after his performance at Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix formed The Band of Gypsies, a new group featuring Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums. Some thought that the creation of the all black group was an effort by Hendrix to appease the Black Power movement, which was pressuring him to become more militant in using his fame to speak up for civil rights. Others simply felt it was a necessary business move, as Hendrix was contractually bound to produce an album for producer Ed Chalpin in order to resolve a legal dispute. Still others felt it was another musical experiment for Jimi, as working with Miles created a fusion of jazz and rock which had never before been seen. Whatever the reasons behind Hendrix's decision, he, Cox and Miles rehearsed new material that they debuted at a series of 4 concerts at the Fillmore East. This soundboard recording captures the 2nd of those 4 shows, the late show from December 31, 1969, 52 years ago today. Less than a month later, the experiment known as The Band of Gypsies came to an abrupt end when Hendrix walked off stage at a concert at Madison Square Garden. Their set had been delayed until 3 am, and Hendrix clearly was in no shape to play.  The Band of Gypsies was no more, but Jimi would reform the Experience (with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding) to play a series of concerts in spring and summer of 1970, his last tour before his death on September 18, 1970,  Download this soundboard to hear one of only 5 concerts ever played by The Band Of Gypsies. By the way - sorry the last 5 tracks are missing but some Jimi is better than none.

1978 - On May 23, 1978, Bruce Springsteen launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975; the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as the shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce on the final night of 1978, in Cleveland on December 31, 1978, 43 years ago today. Unfortunately The energy generated duirng the tour, however, got a bit out of hand during this show. Followinga cover of Elvis Presley’s "Good Rockin’ Tonight," someone in the crowd threw a firecracker onstage. It glanced off Springsteen’s face and then exploded. Fortunately, he was only slightly cut, with a bandage under his right eye marking where he got hit. Ironically, after asking the crowd to please not throw anything lese, Bruce launched into the song Point Blank.

1979 - When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time. Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence. This FM broadcast captures Southside and the Jukes closing out the 1970s, in their home state of NJ, on stage at the Capitol Theater on December 31, 1979, 42 years ago today.

1977 - As long time readers of this blog know, I not only saw my first Grateful Dead concert in 1977, the famed Englishtown performance on September 3, 1977, with over 150,000 in attendance, still the largest concert in NJ history, but also truly believe it was the finest year in the band's long strange trip.  The Spring tour included the May 8 concert at Barton Hall, widely regarded as the best single show in the band ever played.  But Spring was more than just Barton Hall, as evidenced that 20 shows from that run were officially released.  The fall tour was just as hot, with some folks claiming that the October 29 concert in Des Moines ranks right up wth Barton Hall. In any event,  both that show and Englishtown have been officially released, along with 4 other complete concerts from the  fall, plus excerpts from 3 others. The end of the years saw no let up in the band's level of play, as the December 29, 1977 concert has also been officially released.  This soundboard recording brings you the next night, December 30, 1977, 44 years ago today, at Winterland in San Francisco.  A note - some of the second set has been officially released as as bonus tracks, but we're bringing you the entire show - consider it a holiday gift!

1979 -  On November 23, 1979, Paul McCartney and Wings began a 19-date concert tour of the United Kingdom to promote their newest album, Back to the Egg. The band added a 20th date when they teamed up with Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Robert Plant for the last of 4 Concerts for Kampuchea on December 29, 1979. At the time, the UK shows were supposed to be the first leg of a world tour that would visit Japan, Europe and the US. All that ended, however, when McCartney was busted for marijuana possession when arriving in Japan in January 1980. So, though no one knew it at the time, when Wings took the stage for the last night of the Concerts for Kampuchea, it would be the last time they would ever perform as a band.  This soundboard + audience recording captures that final show in its entirety, from December 29, 1979, 42 years ago this very day.

1972 - From 1971 to 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, mostly on the west coast. The two even released a live album together, entitled Live At The Keystone, featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo at the same venue, about 6 months earlier, on December 28, 1972, 4 years ago today.  A note - for years this show had listed as having taken place at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo, but recently a poster was found indicating that Jerry and Merl were at the Keystone on this date.

1962 - Before Beatlemana, before the appearances of the Ed Sullivan Show, before becoming the first rock band to sell our a sports stadium, before revolutionizing rock & roll with albums such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road, The Beatles honed their chops by playing all night gigs at the Star Club in Hamburg.  Their December 1962 run at the club would be their last, as the Fab Four were on the cusp of stardom. Their first single, Love Me Do, hit the top 20 in England that same month.  So this soundboard recording from December 28,1962, 59 years ago today captures The Beatles at a key moment in theior career, as they transitioned from being a club performers to becoming the greatest rock and roll band in history.

1967 - Few television appearances by a rock band are as famous as when The Doors performed Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan Show on September 17, 1967. Before the show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better', to avoid any suggestion of drug use. While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison, in classic 1960s example of the counter-culture defying the establishment, left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever!  That wasn't the only TV appearance, however, by the Doors that historic year.  For example, in March and June they appeared on Clay Cole's Diskotek on WPIX Channel 11 in New York.  In May, they performed on Boss City on KHJ-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles. In July, they made an an appearance on American Bandstand, while in September they performed on Murray The K's Aquarian Age.  This TV soundboard recording captures yet another TV appearance by The Doors that year, on the Johnathon Winters' Show on December 27, 1967, 54 years ago today.

1967 - Few years in rock history were as memorable and innovative as 1967.  From i]the ushering in of the psychedelic scene with Sgt. Pepper's, to memorable debut albums such as re You Experienced?, Surrealistic Pillow and the self titled debuts from The Doors and The Grateful Dead,  to the Monterrey Pop Festival to the Summer Of Love, 1967 took rock and roll from 2 minute radio friendly AM songs to complex, multi-dimensional arrangements that found a home of free form FM radio.  In the US, few cities were as important to the new revolution in rock than San Francisco. Bill Graham's Fillmore and Wiinterland arenas became the stomping grounds for bands like the Dead, the Airplane, and Santana, just to name 3, who played jam filled concerts that often saw one song seamlessly fade into the next, fueled by psychedelic light shows and a host of drugs. Incredibly, amidst this sea of change, an icon from the 1950s  became a regular performer at Graham's 2 venues. He played 10 shows at Winterland that year, 1 on the same bill with the Dead, 6 on the same night as Eric Burden and 3 sharing the bill with Steve Miller.  He performed 7 times at Winterland - 2 on the same bill s the Grateful Dead, 3 on the same night as The Doors, and 2 on sharing the bill with Big Brother and the Holding Company.  The soundboard recording captures one of the 3 nights he led in for the Doors, on December 26, 1967, 54 years ago this very day.

1972 - In December 23, 1972, 49 years ago today, Grand Funk Railroad headlined a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden for the Phoenix House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization.  Given that the band's ost recent album was entitled Phoenix, the partnership made perfect sense.  The show was filmed for the series ABC In Concert, and was simulcast on FM radio. While Grand Funk was popular enough to sell out MSG, they were still months away from their biggest commercial success.  In June 1973, the band would release the album We're An American Band, which would go to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the title track would do even better, capturing the top spot!

1968 -  In July 1968, the Grateful Dead released their 2nd studio album, entitled Anthem Of The Sun.  The disc consisted on just 5 songs, 4 of which were 7 minutes of more in length.  It was a far cry from the early 1960s when 2 minute pop tunes ruled the day. Three of those tracks - The Other One, Alligator and Caution (Do Not Stop On The tracks) would become staples of the band's 1968 and 1969 concerts which centered on psychedelic and blues based jams.  This soundboard recording from Los Angeles from December 21, 1968, 53 years ago today, features all 3, serving as an excellent example of "primal Dead".

1970 - In December 1970, while helping David Crosby record the album If Only I Could Remember My Name, at Wally Heider's Studio in San Francisco. members of the Grateful Dead decided to team up with him for a few live performances. Billed officially as Jerry Garcia and Friends, though the collaboration is better known by the unofficial title of David & The Dorks, Garcia, Crosby Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzman played 5 shows together, 4 at the Matrix in San Francisco (on 12/14. 12/15, 12/16 and 12/20) and one at Pepperland in San Rafael (on 12/21). For years, Mickey Hart was listed as the drummer (even the artwork notes that) but both the Jerry Garcia site and Lost Live Dead indicate it was actually Kreutzman who took part. Whichever Dead drummer was on stage, this soundboard recording captures the quartet on December 20, 1970, 51 years ago today!

1977 - In the late 1970's, as the punk and new wave scene flourished, the UK produced the 3 angry men of rock and roll - Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and Graham Parker. Of the 3, Graham Parker often gets over looked, which is a shame. His first two albums, Howling Wind and Heat Treatment, both released in 1976, were widely hailed by critics. For example, Robert Christgau gave both discs a grade of A! In March 1979, Parker released his masterpiece, Squeezing Out Sparks. The album was not only a critical success, but also a commercial one, as the disc cracked the top 40 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures Parker between Heat Treatment and Squeezing Out Sparks, in Rotterdan Nottingham on December 1977, 44 years ago today.

1973 - The Grateful Dead found themselves rebounding from personnel losses in 1973, emerging as an even stronger musical force in the process. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band in late 1971, and would not return until late 1974. In early 1973, original keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan passed away at age 27, the first of the band's keyboard players to die tragically. The Dead's sound began a new evolution, with Bill Kreuztman handling the drums solo, while Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux added new musical elements to the mix. Keith's piano playing was more jazzy compared to Pigpen's bluesy sound, while Donna Jean helped fill out the band's harmonies. New tunes such as Jimmy Row, Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World, Loose Lucy and Wave That Flag (an early version of U.S. Blues) entered the band's repertoire. During the summer, the Dead would tour with both the Allman Brothers and The Band, including the historic concert at Watkins Glen in August which drew over 600,00 fans. By the fall and winter of 1973, the band was hitting on all cylinders, as evidenced the fact that a DOZEN shows from that period were officially released, featuring shows between September 8 and December 19. This soundboard recording captures the Dead in Tampa, on December 18, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today, and just 1 days before the show which was released as the first Dick's Picks back in 1993

1978 -
In the lore of the Grateful Dead, 1978 has always been a year that receives mixed reviews. As regular readers of this blog know, 1977 was THE YEAR for the Dead with a run of shows that may be unmatched in the band’s history. So, 1978 has always founds itself in the “tough act to follow” position. In truth, the Dead’s playing in 1978 wasn’t quite at the same level as the prior year. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. My own Dead experiences from 1978 reflect the same dichotomy. On the one hand, I saw them on May 10 and 11 in New Haven and Springfield, 2 shows that were so good they were officially released as Dick’s Picks Volume 25. On the other hand, I attended their September 2 performance at Giants Stadium, the last show before they headed to Egypt, and the band was clearly not firing on all cylinders. That said, when the Dead were good in 1978, they were very good, maybe as good as they were in 1977. This soundboard recording from December 17, 1978, 43 years ago today, captures the band on in fine form at the Fox Theater In Atlanta, especially in the 2nd set with a great triplet of I Need A Miracle > Betha > Good Lovin' to open, a wonderful Estimated > Eyes before the drums and a rare combo of Shakedown Street > Sugar Magnolia to close it out, By the way, the band was back on the road in December after having to cancel 5 shows in late November as Garcia was suffering from laryngitis, which had first reared its ugly head during a nationwide radio broadcast of their concert from the Capitol Theater in Passaic on November 24, 1978.  I had missed out of tickets to that one, but called the box office day of the show to see if ant last minute seats were available.  The guy who answered the phone said no, but told me if  could come up with some "coke" (not the kind you drink) and bring it to the box office, he'd find me a seat!  Needless to say, I wound up listening (and taping) the show on the radio!

1972 - For the Grateful Dead, the year 1972 would be a transitional one, marked by some incredible high points but marred by sadness. The band would integrate new keyboardist Keith Godchaux (who joined in late 1971) and his wife, vocalist Donna Jean, into the band. The Dead would travel to Europe, a legendary venture originally marked by the triple album, Europe 72, and later commemorated by the official release of every show from that tour. On August 27, 1972, the band would play a show at Veneta, Oregon which Deadheads rank along with the May 8, 1977 Cornell show as one for the ages. Alcohol abuse finally caught up with founding member and organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who played his last show with the band on July 17, 1972, and eventually passed away in March 1973, another rocker whose lifestyle cost him his life at age 27. With Pigpen departing the band, the Dead lost some of their bluesy roots. The band began experimenting with some jazz influenced material, as evident on the album Wake of the Flood released the following year. As many of you know, 1973 and 1974 are often considered (along with 1977) as the Dead's peak, but 1972 set the stage. The soundboard recording captures the Dead duringtheir next to last show of 1972, in Long Beach, on December 15, 1972, 49 years ago today.
