Despite having seen the Dead more times than I can count, I actually didn’t attend a single Dead show in 1982. I was in grad school at the time, working on my MBA, with lots of night classes so I couldn't catch many concerts that year. In any event, I don't have much first hand knowledge of the Dead from that year, but I do know that they debuted a host of new tunes, such as Throwin' Stones, Touch Of Grey, and West LA Fade Away which would eventually comprise their only top 10 album, In The Dark, which wouldn't be released until 1987, 5 years later! I also know that two of my good on line music buddies, AZ Jones, and Wolfclan, highly recommend 1982 as a really fine year for the band. This soundboard recordingis from December 31, 1982, 33 years ago today, is proof of why, as it features the Dead in fine form, including a spectacular 3rd set with Etta James and the Tower of Power horns!

In June 1965, the band The Them, fronted by Van Morrison, released their debut album. Morrison released his first solo album, Blowin' Your Mind!, two years later in September 1967. Since them, its been an almost 5 decade odyssey for Van the Man, a journey into the heart and soul of music, combining the Irish mysticism of his heritage with a quest for spiritual transcendence, coupled with traditional blues, rock and country influences. Beholden to no singular style but always true to himself, Van has both mesmerized ad baffled his fans and critics, but in the end, the music truly does soothe one’s soul. This Hq Audience recording captures Van the Man on December 31, 1996, 19 years ago today,in Sunrise Fl.  Van plays a number of tunes off his 1995 album, Days Like This, reaches back for some classics such as Moondance, Into The Mystic and Tupelo Honey, and even ends the night with Auld Lang Syne!

Dave Mason has played with both Traffic and Fleetwood Mac, in addition to having a successful solo career. After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. His best charting single during that period was Only You Know and I Know, which hit Number 42 on the Billboard charts in 1970. His biggest success, however, would come in 1977, with the release of the album Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. This FM recording, however, is from before that run of hist, as it features Mason on December 31, 1975, 4 decades ago today, from the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Maybe that's why the set list features only a few of his solo tracks and is dominated by tunes from his days with Traffic.

As 1979 came to a close, a host of rock superstars came together for a 4 night series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London to raise money for the victims of war-torn Cambodia. The 4 shows, entitled The Concerts For The People OF Kampuchea, featured the following acts:
  • December 26: Queen
  • December 27: Ian Dury, Matumba and The Clash
  • December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who
  • December 29: Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Paul McCartney & Wings
A double album featuring highlights from the concert was released in 1981, but due to a host of record company issues, has never been released in any digital format. That said, we have some highlights from the final night of shows, on December 29, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today, which were not included on the album when it was released. These soundboard recordings capture McCartney, Rockpile & Elvis Costello demonstrating the power of rock & roll to help raise awareness and funds for social causes!

The Rascals - 2012-12-20 - Port Chester, NY (Ex Aud)

In the early 1960s, three quarters of this band originally played with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. When Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish went out on their own, adding drummer Dino Danelli from Garfield , NJ, the same town Brigati was from, they became the Young Rascals. Eventually shortened to just The Rascals, the band ran off a string of top 10 hits in the late 1960s, including 3 number 1 tunes in Good Lovin, Groovin' and People Got To Be Free. It ended all too quickly, with the band coming apart as the decade came to an end. In fact, with the exception of a short set played at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the last time the original Rascals played a full concert was in 1970. Then after 4 decades apart, the band reunited on April 24, 2010, at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill, for a charity event for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, where Steve Van Zandt and his wife, Maureen, were also being honored. When asked why they got back together for this event, Rascals guitarist Gene Cornish said: “I speak on behalf of the band when I say all the money offers in the world could not entice the Rascals to reunite, but four phone calls from Stevie and without hesitation we enthusiastically and immediately agreed to both support this wonderful cause and honor Stevie and Maureen.”. By the way, the association with Steve and Maureen Van Zandt eventually led to another reunion in 2012. Miami Steve and his wife produced The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, a Broadway show featuring the band performing their tunes set against a backdrop of the history of the group and the 1960s, featuring interviews with the four Rascals, filmed scenes of actors enacting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band. The sow was such a success that the Rascals took it off Broadway and around the country. This high quality audience recording captures The Rascals during that tour on December 20, 2012, just 3 years ago today, in Port Chester, NY.

Born in Baltimore in 1949, Greg Kihn is yet another musician who found success when he moved to San Francisco in 1972. After 9 years of touring and building a local following, he became an “overnight sensation” in 1981 with The Break Up Song, which became a top 20 hit when the video for the tune received extensive airplay on the then fledgling MTv network. Kihn would have his biggest hit 2 years later, when his tune Jeopardy climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts. Kihn received even more attention when Al Yankovic released a parody entitled I Lost On Jeopardy. Yankovic also produced an accompanying music video for MTv, and Kihn was a good enough sport to appear in it! This FM broadcast captures Kihn several years after all the MTv fame, years later, in San Francisco, on December 17, 1992, 23 years ago today.

Just about 2 weeks before the Grateful Dead closed Winterland for good during their New Year’s Eve show, Bruce Springsteen piad a visit to that historic venue on December 15, 1978, 37 years ago today, a show broadcast on KSAN-FM. During the encores, Bruce broke out the Detroit Medley, his take on Devil With The Blue Dress On, Good Golly Miss Molly, C.C. Rider and Jenny Take A Ride. Springsteen borrowed all 4 tunes from Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, but Ryder was not the original artist for any of them. Ryder had scored a had a top 10 hit in 1965 when he combined the traditional blues song CC Rider with Little Richard’s Jenny, Jenny, aka Jenny Take a Ride. He repeated the formula the following year when he paired Devil With The Blue Dress On, a hit for Shorty Long on Motown’s Soul label, with Good Golly Miss Molly another Little Richard classic. Ryder’s 1966 combo did even better than his first pairing, reaching #4 on the Billboard charts.

In the late 1970’s, Joe Jackson was one of the angry young men of the punk/new wave movement, along with fellow Brits Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. By 1980, his music began to take a different tone, with the album Beat Crazy including some gentler material. His transition continued in 1981, when he released Jumpin Jive, an album featuring swing tunes from such legends as Cab Calloway, Lester Young, Glenn Miller and Louis Jordan. Then in 1982, Jackson released Night and Day, an album dedicated to and influenced by Cole Porter. That disc went to #4 on the Billboard charts, Jackson’s only top ten album. The singles Steppin' Out" and Breaking Us In Two both were top 20 hits. Gentle Joe was clearly more chart friendly than his angry predecessor. This FM broadcast captures Jackson on tour in support of Night and Day on December 9, 1982, 33 years ago today.
