Women Wednesday: Supergirl's Family Vacation Graphic Novel

DC Comics released Supergirl's Family Vacation yesterday. This graphic novel is mostly for younger readers but it's still a fun read. Superman, Lois Lane and their young son, Jon Kent, also appear. Here is the official summary:

"Kara Zor-El is an excellent superhero who is just not appreciated by the people of Metropolis. Summer’s coming, and she’s ready to visit Argo, a floating city in space where the last survivors of Krypton live. These are her people, and since Clark grew up on Earth, she can teach him a thing or two for once. It’s the perfect plan! And it gets even better when Lois invites along Kara’s best friend, Natasha. But when their road trip through space is interrupted by an old friend of Clark’s, the family gets diverted to a strange and beautiful planet with a dark secret that only Superman can save them from. Kara’s plans get pushed aside. Again. What’s a cranky preteen to do? Hang out at the pool, meet a cute boy, and save the day, of course!"

Superhero Sunday: DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1

DC Comics and Marvel released DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1 on March 25, 2026. There are eight stories including Superman and Spider-Man in "Truth, Justice and Great Responsibility" followed by Lois Lane and Mary Jane in "The World's Finest" (with special guest star Gambit). Superboy-Prime and Amazing Spider-Man (Peter Parker in black costume) appear in "Pages" followed by Superman and Spider-Man 2099 in "Beyond the Cobwebs of Tomorrow" (with special guest star Batman Beyone). Jimmy Olsen and Carnage in "Jimmy Con Carnage" followed by Jonathan Kent and Ben Parker in "The Bridge." Daily Planet and Daily Bugle in "Bias" followed by Power Girl and the Punisher in "Blind Date."

Here is the official summary:

"When journalists Clark Kent and Peter Parker find themselves chasing the same story, the conspiracy they uncover could change the world — especially if Brainiac and Doctor Octopus have anything to say about it. (And we bet they do!) Good thing our intrepid newshounds are secretly Superman and the amazing Spider-Man. Brought to you by legendary storytellers Mark Waid and Jorge Jimenez."

Supervillain Sunday: Superman #33 Cover

This week's Superhero Sunday post has been switched with a Supervillain Sunday post. The cover of Superman #33 from DC Comics does not feature the main superhero. Instead it features Lex Luthor vs the Demon since it's a DC K.O. tie-in. Superman himself does not appear in this issue but Superboy Prime, Lois Lane and a Superman robot does.

Super Sunday: DC's Kal-El-Fornia Love Special

DC released DC's Kal-El-Fornia Love one shot summer special last week. The cover features Superman, Lois Lane, Superboy, Supergirl, Power Girl and other members of the Super Family.

Supergirl’s day at the beach is interrupted by a demonic creature from the deep and John Constantine! Jon and Conner Kent team up to wrangle an escaped beast in the Redwoods! The Summer of Superman continues this week with the release of Superman Unlimited #1. The cover features Superman, Lois Lane, Krypto, Jonathan Kent aka Superboy, Jimmy Olsen and Zod. The story is basically an excuse for a series of flashbacks. As a bonus, there is a preview of Supergirl #1.

Countdown to Halloween 2023 Day 5: DC's Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun #1

This year's Halloween treat from DC Comics is DC's Ghouls Just Wanna Fun #1. Surprisingly, Harley Quinn is not on the cover. Instead, it's Clark Kent and Lois Lane getting tricked by some little goblins dressed up as the Flash, Mary Marvel, Animal Man and Lobo. The best costume award goes to the one that looks like Man-Bat but he's cheating since that's not a costume.

The stories include the Question in "A Look to Die For", Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) in "The Shadow Over Coast City", Animal Man in "This Day, Anything Goes" (my favorite), Nightwing in "The Dark Bite", Superman in "The Spoils", Robotman in "Not Fade Away", Crush and Lobo in "Happy Hal(lobo)ween", and Man-Bat in "Out of the Shadows".

Note: This is one of four covers.

Countdown to Halloween 2021 Day 7: Are You Afraid of Darkseid?

Are You Afraid of Darkseid? #1 is out now from DC Comics just in time for Halloween. The cover features Darkseid behind Robin as he is telling scary stories to the rest of the Teen Titans (Kid Flash, Crush, Aqualad and Red Arrow but Roundhouse is now where to be seen). This is their annual one-shot Halloween special but die-hard horror fans will be a bit disappointed as the stories found within are mostly for fun. The issue starts with "Are You Afraid of Darkseid?" as the Teen Titans camping and telling scary stories around the campfire. Red Arrow is first up with "Bloody Mary" that puts a New Gods spin on the urban legend that features Harley Quinn and Darkseid. Robin is up next with "Backseat Driver" that features Batman chasing Mad Hatter, who is riding a bicycle. Crush's scary story is "Escape the Dark Fortress" featuring John Stewart as Green Lantern with brief appearances by Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner and Katma Tui. Kid Flash takes his turn with "The Endless Staircase" featuring the Phantom Stranger. Aqualad's scary story is titled "The Ogopogo", which features him and Aquaman. Roundhouse doesn't want to tell a scary story so Red Arrow tells her second story, which is "Black Eyed Kids" featuring Vixen and Wonder Woman. Roundhouse changes his mind and decides to tell "The Celler" that finds Superman and Lois Lane looking for missing twins in Kansas (he gets his life force drained by a horrorifying female creature). The final page with the Teen Titans around the campfire is perhaps the scariest part of the whole issue.

Countdown to Halloween 2020 Day 10: Lois Lane Gets Witchy

I can't believe that I have never posted the cover to Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #1 from 1958 before. One would think that this would have been out on the shelves in time for Halloween. The issue actually hit the newsstands on January 14th according to the ad. The cover and first page actually has it as a March-April issue. "The Witch of Metropolis" is actually the third story and Lois Lane turns into an old hag instead of being a cute witch. I think someone at DC Comics needs to update the story and make her a sexy witch.

Convergence #8

The cover of Convergence #8 (July 2015) shows Hal Jordan as Parallax, Supergirl, Flash, Superman, Lois Lane and baby in a giant hand (yes, they are all the pre-Crisis versions):
Cover of Convergence #8 from DC Comics
The highlights of this issue for me are the double page spreads featuring the alternate Earths in the multiverse that has been restored by the undoing of Crisis on Infinite Earths:

Of course, the planet that Telos was tied to becomes the new Earth 2.

To me this issue seemed rushed and left me a little underwhelmed. It's great to see the multiverse back but how exactly they did it was not shown. I think this event warranted at least two more issues. I have to wonder how many of these alternate Earths we will really see in the future.

Convergence: Superman #2

Convergence: Superman #2 (July 2015) has a good cover with Lois Lane about to give birth with the Flashpoint Batman looking down upon her and Superman:
Cover of Convergence: Superman #2 from DC Comics
This issue feels more like an issue of World's Finest even with the Flashpoint versions.

The best part of this issue is the birth of Jonathan Samuel Kent:

I would like to see this version of Superman and Lois Lane continue.

Convergence: Action Comics #1

The cover of Convergence: Action Comics #1 (June 2015) features Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman and Superman from Earth 30 (the official home of characters in the Superman: Red Son mini-series) along with Superman, Power Girl and Lois Lane from pre-Crisis Earth 2. The story actually switches back and forth between Moscow and Metropolis.
Cover of Convergence: Action Comics #1 from DC Comics
My favorite part of this issue is Power Girl. She has been shacking up with Andrew for the past year while under the dome. The loss of her superpowers has not been kind to her since she is gaining weight and having health issues that we all have. She flashbacks to her glory days of fighting the likes of the Ultra-Humanite and Solomon Grundy:
Page 15 of Convergence: Action Comics #1 from DC Comics
I have always been a fan of the pre-Crisis Earth 2 so this is one of my favorite issues in the Convergence event. I wish all of the other issues would have switched back and forth between the two cities that are going to do battle with each other.

1700th Post: Convergence: Superman #1

Yes, another milestone has been reached for this my 1700th post at Moongem Comics. To help celebrate is a look at Convergence: Superman #1 (June 2015). First up is the cover:
The issue starts off as a powerless Clark running around Gotham City busting criminals dressed kind of like Batman did in Year One. His Oracle is Lois Lane and he is about to get burned up. He doesn't and his black hood costume is burned off to reveal his Superman costume. Yes, this is the pre-52 man of steel when he and Lois were married. He saves Jimmy Olsen before flying back home to Lois, who is pregnant. Superman, Lois and Jimmy had been attending a news conference in Gotham City before the dome went down a year ago. He leaves her after the voice of Telos fills the sky.

Switch to the Gotham City of the Flashpoint universe where Thomas Wayne aka Batman is having a meeting with Captain Thunder, Cyborg, Abin Sur aka Green Lantern and Kal-El aka Superman. All but the latter agree to take out the married and father to be Superman.

Jimmy Olson stops by Professor Hamilton's lab to pick up a weapon to help his old pal. He winds up with the Whiz Wagon (I'm not making this up for he actually calls it that a few pages later).

Captain Thunder attacks the married man of steel and they duke it out. Flashpoint Cyborg and Green Lantern shows up moments before Jimmy in his Whiz Wagon arrives.
Flashpoint's Kal-El meanwhile flies to the pregnant Lois Lane because the one in his world died. He approaches her while her Superman is struggling against the Flashpoint's superheroes.

So far it seems that all the dome cities have been different versions of Gotham City. I wonder if there is a reason for this. Overall, I liked this issue mostly for seeing the married version of Superman and Lois Lane. The only Flashpoint character that I would like to see more of is Captain Thunder. The Flashpoint version of Superman felt very creepy at the end of this issue.
