With Jared’s passing in October 2016, the complete JEMS Archive was moved south from his home up north. That move, sad as its impetus was, presented an opportunity, however daunting, to go through and organize the collection. With the help of some amazing friends and experts (among them Slowburn, SS, RD and slipkid68), JEMS tapes are now accessible in ways they have never been before. SG was also on hand to help and fill in our taping history as he always does.

When the task was done and loaded into the truck, one box in particular captured my attention: master reels recorded by SG on his Tandberg portable reel to reel. We’ve posted some 20 or more of these on DIME over the years, but this box contained master reels that had never been digitized before and, in some instances, had never been traded or circulated.

If you don’t know about the Tandberg, it was a remarkable piece of gear in its day, not only capable of recording at 3-3/4 and 7-1/2 IPS, but in full-track mono. I won’t do the math, but compared to a cassette, the surface area of tape capturing the music is orders of magnitude higher, which is why so many of SG’s Tandberg masters from the likes of David Bowie, Elton John, Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen are considered by some as audience-recording classics. The Tandberg required 10(!) D-cel batteries to operate, is roughly the size of a compact typewriter and weighs more than ten pounds. Imagine sneaking that into a show and your respect for what SG accomplished only grows.

This is the first in a series of Tandberg master reels digitized for the first time. Happily, the original Tandberg deck is still fully functioning, so these transfers offer full-track mono playback on the original tape recorder to maximize quality.

We open with Tom Scholz’ Boston, and yes, I am a closet fan. This early ‘77 set includes all the songs it should from the first album, two previews from the second, as well as a pair of songs that were only part of the band’s live set, “Shattered Images” and “Television Politician.” Criticize them if you must, but in an era of full live instrumentation, Boston’s ability to recreate its layered studio sound in concert is impressive, as are Brad Delp’s vocals.

SG made a point of attaching his microphone to some arena seating infrastructure and with his long microphone cord, he moved it away from any close-up audience. You’ll notice that here as there is really nothing in the way between the PA and the recorder on what for my money is a rather remarkable recording. Samples provided. If the file size seems small, remember it is a mono file, half the size of stereo version of the same thing.

Our hat goes off again to SG for his remarkable work in the ‘70s, ‘80s and beyond for capturing these shows in the first place, and to Jared, may his legacy live on as he rests in peace. Thanks as well to mjk5510, for his steadfast support of JEMS’ efforts.

I used the built-in microphone on a cheap Panasonic cassette tape recorder with a ScotchBrand Low Noise, Low-Bias C120 tape.

I was sitting halfway up the seats in Henry Levitt Arena, which is circular in shape, and I was dead center facing the stage, which was a maximum of 100 feet from where I was sitting.

Turned out great. A really good audience recording.

This is a super rare Boston show that may be uncirculated even. I got this is a trade about 15 years ago, and if memory serves me correctly (no guarantee it does), it came from the trader's master recording. Either way, in all of my years of trading and collecting live and rare music, I've never once seen this anywhere. I even did an internet search looking for this recording being mentioned anywhere today. I found nothing on it. I did find a number of sites referencing the show and date at the Tarrant County Convention Center. But I couldn't find anything on a recording of the show.

The trader also sent me about 25 to 35 pictures from the concert. I don't believe he took them however. I'm sure he was busy recording the show. I have looked high and low for where I have these pictures stored but have not found them yet. I have a feeling (actually more than a feeling :-)) they are on an old 486 DX66V Gateway PC (pre-Pentium) or on an old external hard drive somewhere around the house. If I can find them, I'll make another upload of them and add it to my site as a zipped WinRAR file and post the link.

Notes:
This show was allegedly taken from the WMMS radio station vaults by a disgruntled employee and sold to the bootleg label. To that criminal, I have this to say - THANK YOU! That is the alleged story, whether it's true or not I don't know, but it made it's way out of WMMS somehow. The performance itself is truly remarkable. It was recorded only a few weeks into the tour for the debut album and shows a band giving their absolute all. Brad Delp sounds great! Sholtz and Goudreau trade leads frequently and the fireworks they create are spectacular. Bass player Sheehan and drummer Hashian, hold down the grooves well throughout and contribute serviceable background vocals as well. Considering Sholtz played almost everything on the studio record himself and Delp did lead and background vocals, the parts are covered very well by the live band. Though, the background vocals can't match 4 or 5 overdubbed Delps. Highlights include a very early version of "A Man I'll Never Be", (which would later appear on the Don't Look Back album) and a blistering version of "Foreplay/Long Time" as well as a few gems that never made it on their studio albums. All in all, a hell of a show and one that no Boston fan should be without!

Notes:
The SuperSonic bootleg label put out a gem of a product with this show.
Not only is the sound quality out of this world, but the artwork is stunning as well.
There were not many made, but if you ever come across it...snatch it up!
I paid a nice amount of money for mine and I frankly can't believe I'm sharing it here on DIME, but that's what I'm doing.
