In May 2016, Iggy Pop rocked to the foundations of the venerable Royal Albert Hall in London as part of his tour "Post Pop Depression". Between classics ( "Lust for Life", "The passenger", but also "China Girl," the song of Bowie) and new titles, a twenty-hour of pure pleasure punk.

Boosted from its entrance on stage shirtless from the third title, and cheered by a crowd of five thousand screaming fans, the Iguana gave in May to 69, a rock fury demonstration including the Royal Albert Hall London will remember a long time. As part of his European tour "Post pop depression", the name of his latest album, the punk rock legend performed for the first time in London with the training that allowed him to record this album. An anthology concert featuring Josh Homme, guitarist and singer of the band Queens of the Stone Age, and the drummer of Arctic Monkeys, Matt Helders visibly galvanized by the supernatural power of their leader. Between classics ( "Lust for Life", "The passenger", but also "China Girl," the song of Bowie) and new titles, a twenty-hour of pure pleasure rock.

This recording begins with the near final strains of The 1812 Overture, and Iggy shouting "Hey you f***ing c**ts kiss my butt!"

Then the band launch into Hassles...as it's immediately noticeable this recording is even  clearer than the Hammersmith (Feb 80), Hamburg (May 80) and the Pesaro (May 80) FM recording: the clarity, stereo sound and comparitively low audience noise  suggest it's a mixing desk recording.

The sound is not dissimilar to the (admittedly audience) Stadio Comunale, Torino, Italy, 19th June 1981 recording. Like the recent Sydney Capitol Theatre July 1983 FM recording, the vocal is sometimes a bit off centre, but since this the band seem about right in the stereo 'picture', I have not tried to correct that.

The recording signal fades a bit here and there on some of the tracks, I did some repairs of the worst bits of that in Audacity, raising the levels in the worst bits of dropout /fading out.

Nice to finally get a high quality stereo recording of I'm Crying...the only disappointment is that versions liked this missed the boat and got overlooked in all the previous live releases and compilations. Some tracks have faltering recording signal more than others - like Five Foot One and Take Care Of Me...so if you like to download one track to judge quality, I'd say try at the very least try something other than Five Foot One, where the signal was weakest. With Take Care of Me, signal fluctuations and noise meant I reduced the treble filter some of the worst of that - honestly, it made uncomfortable listening until I did that. Overall though, this is a fine quality recording.

So, after finding a few winter - spring 1980 recordings (which do actually all stand up on their own merits still), I have now finally found the best quality one it seems.

This is a powerful performance! The vocal is a little off centre and I tried to correct that a bit, but there's only so much you can do without labouring for hours on this (well, hours more! :)). It's a high octane show from Iggy and his band...there's the odd flaw in the mix, and I did a little bit of playing around in Audacity to see what I can do. It seems to sound better than the version that was torrented last year to my ears...I don't do samples (this takes  nough time as it is!), but you can always download a track to see what you think. Like I say it sounds pretty powerful to me anyway.

The great Stan Gutoski. R.I.P.

Stan recorded hundreds of shows in and around the Seattle area starting in 1972 and kept taping for over five decades.

He was famous for recording shows on a Tandberg full-track mono reel to reel, and his masters of Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, David Bowie, CSNY, and Joni Mitchell are some of the best '70s recordings of those artists.

What is less widely known about Stan is that he was equally committed to recording radio broadcasts on his home reel to reel which was a Revox B77.

If any local Seattle station was broadcasting a live concert or carrying a syndicated concert series, Stan fired up the recorder, sometimes going to sleep with an alarm to wake him up to flip the tape (his job in the postal service required him to report to work very early).

He also set up a timer system to record broadcasts when he couldn't be there to start the deck.

Stan made over 200 radio recordings, some on 10" reels that are packed with music and interviews.

Those reels were sitting idle in the JEMS Archive for years until our friends at KRW_CO volunteered to transfer them. We were only too happy to let a team whose work we admire take possession of the radio reels and bring Stan's tireless late-night efforts into the digital age.

Info: Recorded at City Hall, Newcastle on 2nd March 1977 - second night on the tour. Fairly hissy, distorted recording, not one of the better Ig/Zigs.

At the end is an interview with Ig - I'm guessing local radio. The interviewer alludes to "The Idiot" as being a title that "reeks of Dostoyevsky" - strangely, Iggy doesn't seem to have thought the same to that point. Some interesting questions, however, and well worth a listen.
