notes by the taper
I traveled from Texas for this show which when I bought it was going to be the last show of the tour. It was a great show and Pete, the birthday boy, was in a great mood. A lot of comments about their history in the Bay area.

When we went in for the soundcheck Pete was on stage but Roger was not a lot of just standing around when Roger came out he told us that Zak and Pino were stuck in traffic. So there was about 10 minutes of it where they just stood around. I cut that from the recording. When everybody arrived they started off with Who Are You. About 3/4 of the way through the song I looked at the levels and they were pegged all they way.... Ah CRAP! Well I quickly adjusted them down. There is some serious clipping going on up to that point but the rest of the soundcheck is in good shape. I volume adjusted the first part to match the rest of the recording.

The main show sounds really good. The talkers around me did not come through on the recording as bad as they did to my ears at the show. The dropped Pictures of Lily and 5:15 and switched them out for Squeeze Box and Acid Queen. My battery was running low so I stopped recording after WGFA so I did not get the band intros.

Notes by the trader:
Length: 112m vg+/ex-.  FM source with 2 tracks (5:15 & I Can't Explain) & between song chatter from audience source.

The above lineage means that the Cass(?) generations are unknown for the AUD source portion. Also, unfortunately I no longer have the information for what possible bootleg sources used for the FM/SBD source.

About five years ago, a very good friend of mine took on the task of making a complete show using the best sources of the legendary 18th May 1974 Charlton show.  For years most of us had the common FM/SBD sources floating around and we also had the AUD source, because it was the only way to get the complete show.  My internet/trader friend combined the best sources to make the show as complete as possible.  He was known in the (RDC) Zep trader circles back then.  He did not just take the two AUD source tracks & combine them to the FM/SBD tracks.  He pain-stakingly adding in  all the between tracks chatter & introductions, etc.  Overall a very nice job, well done.  I do not
claim these to "still" be the best sources available, but 4 or 5 years ago they were.  (LLR Note: around 2000).

Notes:
This DVD was created with the inspiration of ooru, alexander, ricardo & knuckle9 on Long Live Rock.  Taken from the 2 disc Japanese version of Charlton 74, it has been re-tracked to the correct playing order whilst retaining the original Pete Townshend Interview broadcast by the BBC.  Also included as a bonus is an FM audio recording of the remaining tracks not (as yet) available in video format.

Where necessary the audio between tracks has been mastered to produce a "seemless as possible" mix.  This is due to the re-tracking of the original dvd's to correct the playing order.  You may still hear anomolies which could not be masked without degradation of the audio, notably before Substitute and before See Me Feel Me.

For those interested; tracks 1 to 4 and 9 & 10 were taken from Disc 1 of the Japanese 2 Disc set and tracks 5 to 8 and 11 to 16 were taken from Disc 2.

My Generation Blues was played for the first time at this concert.

The Pete Townshend Interview and an edited version of the concert was first broadcast on BBC2's 2nd House show.  The interview was conducted by Melvyn Bragg and was recorded on 29th August 1974.  It was first broadcast on 5th October 1974.  It was re-broadcast on 7th June 1975.  2nd House ran from March 1973 to July 1976.  Re-broadcasts were known as 2nd House 2nd Run.  The interviews are slightly different on each broadcast.

An estimated 75000 were in attendance, even though the limit was set to 50000.

Notes:
The French radio station clearly took their soundboard feed from Bobby Pridden's on-stage desk because you can hear the metronome that is sent to Kenney Jones' headphones during 'Baba O'Riley' and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' (it sounds like a cowbell, and it is very prominent in the mix).

The radio station's engineers had the mix very poorly balanced for the opening track, improved it greatly by the end of the second track, and had it very nice from track three onward (although from mid-way in the show the bass guitar becomes a little quiet and Kenney's kick drum dominates the bottom end).

A French DJ speaks between songs, which i suppose gives the show a broadcast-ambience that is cool in its own way; particularly when he introduces "Oo-Ahhrh-Yu".

The performance of "Who Are You" is, incidentally, the most catastrophic shambles; each member of the group commits a howler at one point or another, and Roger forgets the words of the opening lines just for good measure. Like many performances from this period: the worst is fascinating, the best is actually incredible.

The restoration of this FM recording has been extensive and involved, producing a highly three-dimensional dynamic sound from a source that has never circulated in great quality. People that have this show already will, i've no doubt, consider this an upgrade.

Notes:
JEMS master recording. Mono but excellent+ sounding recording.

This show from the 2nd leg of The Who's 75-76 North American Tour was recorded by the 'S' in JEMS. A unfortunate tape problem results in a missing segment of the show from midway through See Me, Feel Me to part way into My Generation. What remains of the show though, is great despite Roger having the flu. Pete and Keith pick up the slack!

Comments:
Early Who versions recorded at the Record Plant, New York for the aborted Lifehouse project, which then became the material for the Who's Next LP. For those of you who might have wondered how PT's lead style got so mean sounding on Won't Get Fooled Again, that's Leslie West (from Moun- tain) playing lead on this version.

Notes:
Recorded from section 105 row 10 on Pete's side of the lower bowl. This show was originally scheduled for May of 2015, then rescheduled to December and once again to this date. Roger sounded pretty good for the most part, and the show overall was excellent. Catch them on tour while you can.
