Notes by the uploader/trader:
This concert I taped with an AIWA walkman and an extra microphone
I taped this one from the middle of the audience a bit on the left side about 15 meters from the stage. The sound quality is very good +, sometimes better, it has the typical open-air-audience quality. U2's gig on the very 1st Rock am Ring - Germany was a bit like all the others on that tour. All well known stuff, no surprises. Mr. Vox had to climb up on the speakers on the right side of the stage, but -unfortunately- missed this chance to fall down and finish the concert that way half through this gig. Ah, this is another great moment to follow up four irish men way down in their career and way up to gigantomaniac bullshit and transforming to a musical-360°-band nowadays. So, it's a must!!

Flew out to Phoenix from DC for these shows and ended up grabbing a last minute GA ticket from ticketmaster for the first show. Has a fair bit of crowd noise and the music isn't as well defined as night 2, but I still think it came out pretty well considering the location of the arrays.

For the 2nd night I had seats on the side which I normally dislike but with the U2 sound system it was an improvement. After 3 1/2 hours of sleep and a long day at a work conference I was tired. Arena was 41 miles away and was supposed to meet a fellow taper who had my ticket between 7 and 7:30. Goal was to arrive early enough to eat and get set up by 6:30. Traffic was hell and finally resorted to side streets through San Jose. After 2 hours in the car dinner was obviously not going to happen so stopped for french fries and the use of the bathroom. I got to arena at 7 and got a text my friend was stuck in traffic. He arrived at 7:30 and rushed in to set up. Show started and both sound was improved and band was hotter. After Beautiful Day Bono changed things up and they went into a great version of Bad. Had to be the highlight of the show. During the encore Bono pulled a kid up on stage which was cool. All in all a nice recording of a fun U2 show.

Notes:
30th Anniversary of Joshua Tree, where has the time gone. I knew I needed to do this show since my original Joshua Tree tour recordings were some of the most well known recordings from a 35 year taping career. How times have changed. For those shows we had 60 pounds of gear and help from security. Now we have 2 pounds of equipment but need to really work to get tickets, beat walk through metal detectors, wands and stupid security rules. I got down there early and was waiting for another taping friend who had my ticket reserved. My friends  ended up running late and getting caught in traffic meanwhile there were rumours of an earlier start due to curfew and train issues. While I was killing time listening to my 11/15/87 recording in the car I ran the battery down. Dumb move and another jump in the stress level. I heard from a fellow taper who got his gear in and I said I would be late so make sure to capture the opener Mumford and Sons since I didn't expect to be in by the start. My friends showed up, I packed up  his gear since better to have one point of failure sneakking gear in. Got to security and passed through almost unscathed. They wouldn't let me bring in my oranges. Since when is a tasty little tangerine a security risk? Next stop was the bathroom to get set up. Both of us went into a  handicapped stall together to get rigged up (it is SF) and we went out to the GA floor. Security then said no plastic water bottle and I had to pour it into a cup. Poured the water bottle into a cup, found my spot and poured the cup back into the bottle. Had about 10-15 minutes and spotted the other taper 30 feet to my left. Mumford and Sons came on and played for about 50 minutes. Between bands it got quite a bit more crowded and then a bit before 9 Larry Mullen Jr starts walking around the stage and makes his way to the B stage which was anout 20 feet in front and to my left. He sits down and starts the drum intro to Sunday Bloody Sunday. As they blast into the song  I notice how good it sounds. The first part of the stage is on the B stage but I am looking straight ahead not seeing much of the band but enjoying every note. From there they blast into one early vintage song after another. The video screens are also entertaining and I am pretty sure I recognized the road they used in the video footage during Where The Streets Have No Name. For me this was the best U2 show in a long long time. There was some political overtones which were expected and enjoyable and Bono was able to convey his view that we all are on this planet together so we should all work to make it a better place. Before I knew it the set was over and we were waiting on an encore. This was generally newer material and they ended right at 11 on a high note. Made my way back to my car and my friend was waiting  with jumper cables. Got the car started and made it home after a great evening. Enjoy this one.

Comments:
Xavel made a name for themselves in 2015 when they released IEM matrixes of most of the dates on the Rolling Stones' 2015 U.S. tour. Since then, their releases typically have at least some wireless source in the overall mix, and almost without exception have been excellent. Recently, they have begun issuing a series of IEM matrixes from the early part of U2's 2018 "Songs of Experience" tour.

Sound quality is excellent. They seem to have done a pretty good job of de-emphasizing the click track and countdown between tracks; the only drawback is that it would be nice if they had used a good audience source to fill in the mix. Since it's only wireless, you have the tradeoff between sort of sterile sound vs. no audience interference.

Reviews were mixed for this tour, although few people thought it stood up well in comparison to their 2015 "Songs of Innocence" tour. With the benefit of hindsight, I think it did have its moments even if it didn't ever fully come together.

If you're a U2 collector and don't mind the unique sound that comes from IEM sources, chances are that you'll want some or all of these recordings.

Notes:
Without knowing anything about how the U2 online fan community works and how they would react we went ahead and did this project after getting a copy of the 4Reel Productions release of this show. That one was a fine release with two good cameras as seperate angles on the disc and a nice audio track. Why wasn't the 2 cams mixed we in RCR asked ourself? We quickly realized why cause it would look like shit since the counters didn't run the same numbers so a mix would be annoying to watch. In true RCR style we went ahead to fix this. The answer was to crop the video to 16:9 format to loose the counter. The audio remains intact and for the last few songs there is only one camera  used cause the second is useless due to problems with the stage light.

When Love Comes To Town is performed for the first time since 28 August 1993; it is performed in honour of the recently deceased BB King and at the end Bono paid tribute to him, remarking that "the thrill will never be gone". Miracle Drug is performed for the first time since 28 November 2005. Tour debuts by Angel Of Harlem, Bad, California, and One. A few times during the show, Bono made light of Edge taking a tumble offstage during the last song of the previous night's show. He referred to U2's controversial distribution of Songs Of Innocence with his quip that "Edge downloaded himself into the audience without permission".

They seem to have done a pretty good job of de-emphasizing the click track and countdown between tracks (though they are more prominent on this release than the San Jose and Las Vegas releases); the only drawback is that it would be nice if they had used a good audience source to fill in the mix.

JEMS marked its 34th year recording U2 by heading north from our home base to opening night show in Vancouver. The month of rehearsals at Pacific Coliseum definitely paid off as the band was better prepared than has often been the case on opening nights (see Las Vegas 1997).

Speaking to Tapeboy by phone last night, he was struck by how the show began with one powerful rock song after another, which drove the energy of the show high from the start. He also said the distributed PA that rings the arena did make for very good sound leading to something rare at indoor shows these days: it was loud.

The new material, not surprisingly, sounds more compelling from the stage, which in and of itself is said to be a marvel, save for its lack of safety railings (if you haven't seen The Edge's Instagram this morning, he is OK, save for a big scrape on his arm).

Biggest surprise of the night was "Desire." Brother Ken was also there, and he pointed to that song, "Bullet the Blue Sky," "Invisible" and "Until The End of The World" as his highlights; the latter closed "the first set," though plans for a more formal intermission were apparently abandoned. In its place were five minutes or so of videos that bridge from "Until" to "Invisible."
