opening for the Bob Weir Band

Recorded by the L.A. Tape Exchange (L.A.X.) team.
John was the engineer while Mark (the B Man) and Mike (the Flying M) held the microphones.
With the lovely Sue sneaking the deck in for her hubby and my girlfriend Dulcy as support tonight.

Recorded from the 12th row center with the microphones about 6 feet apart and pointed at the stage
The hall has a “big” sound even up close.

06.[02:15] (So You Want To Be A) Rock & Roll Star

Total Time ::: 24:17

::: Not hi-fi but magical & illumating none-the-less. Check samples for self awareness assessment or momentary transcendence.
::: WARTS: Missed some dropouts & tape garble (or couldn't repair them). A little choppy & tiny speed glitches a couple of times, but overall, acclimate to the altitude & you will fly. Cut 5 has cut in it near the end.
::: Line-up was The Byrds, Electric Flag & B.B. King (lights by Holy See). Thurs 1967-12-07 Fillmore Auditorium, Friday 8th & Saturday 9th at Winterland.
::: Supposedly last night with Michael Clarke in the band. (*) This is either the Early show or Early set, not sure which.
::: There are some serious equaliser & studio geniuses out there. I would love an EQ'd copy by someone who knows what they are doing.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono recording equipment -> master audience mono reel-to-reel tape -> unknown generations of tape -> unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B off.

Playback 2011-12-30 ::: unknown generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby off, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2011-06-30.

Line-up (completely unconfirmed!) ::: Roger McGuinn - guitar, vocals // Chris Hillman - bass, vocals // Michael Clarke - drums (last night in the band) // Carlos Bernel(?) - guitar, vocals. I do not believe Gram, Sneaky or Doug are near the stage. Gene Clark had supposedly fled in October, but then supposedly Michael Clark was gone before December too, but the tape notes say this is his last night (though they could be incorrect). There is definitely a second (non-McGuinn) guitarist who takes the lead at times. Have at it historians.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

CoolSonics 188 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! ::: Corrections welcome ::: This one is for B.Tobin, who has been a PRINCE among men & just made his transition. Let's look at it this way. The biggest Byrds fan I have ever known & one of the finest people I have met so far on the planet, just died without hearing this recording, except for an excerpt of "Renaissance Fair" I played him over the telephone. We are FORTY-FIVE years after the show. so here it is folks. It's mono & a bit choppy, but quite listenable & both an education & source of illumination in my opinion. The transition from "Feel A Whole Lot Better" into "A Satisfied Mind" should bring some grins to the most sombre & jaded of tape collector faces. These guys were still having fun. Some rippin' jamming here. Check out the incredible guitar workout & dueling guitars in more than 10 minutes of "My Back Pages" into "BJ Blues", followed by an ecstatic rendition of "Renaissance Fair". A couple of seconds pause & the show takes off into "Eight Miles High". Not the easiest flyte you will ever take but it is a joyful & rewarding one. Remember to fasten yer seatbelts & tell the captain what unusual substances you have consumed, in case an emergency landing is called for. After all, you know what they used to say, better a little Thorazine than a straight jacket. Touch the sky & enjoy!

More recordings on the way, making up for years of slow netspeed. Kudos to Zongo for life support, Lochner for mikes & much more, & to Fast Freddie for runnin' Video Dick's Record Emporium with the bathroom office full of tape decks. Thanks to Hanwaker (few among us can keep his pace) for over 30 years of trading & friendship. Mountains of gratitude to Davmar, D.White, Sanchez, Elliot, The Florida Kid, Kloiber, Zingg, JTW, Bershaw, Boston Gold, Weeks, Dixon, Moore, Gough & SO many more for all that collecting & sharing... Royal thanks to The Man In The Palace, Doc Tinker, Brinkhoffs, Barely Eatin', Reel Master Gaule, Parrish & all the traders who housed me thru my music acquisition & travel years. Hats off to Brother Kent, Uncle Jake, Little Queenie (& her neighbor Frank) & his honor Ptomaine Thomas. Glasses raised to Byron for musical horizon expansion & much obliged to J & Thurston for keepin' my concert fires burnin' since my continental shift. Thanks to the Mods for keepin' DIME alive. Enjoy, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees

Notes from the sleeve...
Superb quality soundboard (better than some other copies circulating), and one of my favourite ever Byrds shows. Possibly the earliest recorded show to feature the Clarence White - Gene Parsons - John York lineup, and in fact, York couldn't have been in the Byrds more than a week or so. And, as Roy Josephson comments, there are some real highlights and some disappointments.

Comments:
This is my original late 90's transfer of twenty Byrds shows from 1970 that I did for their then road manager. Some of these leaked out, some ended up on YouTube, and some were even bootlegged. Those other versions may include editing, EQ, and other "mastering"; this is the raw transfer.
The master cassette was labeled as "New Jersey".
