OldNeumanntapr Notes:
This was a DAT that I received in trade from an over-seas trade from Italy. I love the sound, but I'm sorry that there are a couple of errors in the song 'Working For The Man'. Such are the downsides of DAT, occasionally you had errors. My DAT was missing 'My Eyes Got Lucky'.

taper note:
Second night is incomplete because of recorder power malfunction. However, sound both nights is most excellent.

joeyjay notes:
Cool little two-night stand by Joe and Joel at the venerable Old Quarter, the relocated and legendary venue (in name and ownership) that was Townes Van Zandt's old stomping grounds when it was in Houston. Lots of fun moments, including a trainwreck ending to "White Freightliner Blues" just after it started because Joel's "big truck whine" cracked up Joe and the crowd. Other great touches included a three-song opening on Night 2 as a salute to Townes on his birthday, including "Waiting 'Round To Die"; Jimmie Dale's "When The Nights Are Cold" (written by Butch); Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind"; a spur-of-the-moment duet with Friday opener Lisa Morales on "Where Is My Love?"; the classic "Honky Tonk Masquerade" and a tantalizing one-verse
run at "Locked In A Boxcar With The Queen Of Spain." (dang!) One final thing that is not insignificant: Sound throughout is delicious. As always, all thanks go to Joe - and all the Ely Band boys and sidemen - for all of the spirited nights of music and enjoyment over these many years. Continued thanks to The Coin for the now-retired surrogate mics that saved so many of those memories for posterity and to longtime chum D. Ortiz for the current loaners.

Notes: Here's a really good show worthy of your collection, for a couple of reasons. One, Joe brought old friend Joel along for this "duo" gig ... it was good to see/hear them together again in Big D. Secondly, Joe was coming off "a rough couple of weeks" that Ol' Mike has understood to include personal loss. Live music, the great healer. The setlist leaned heavily on West Texas touchstones. Though we've heard these tunes scores of times, some seemed to carry more weight this night. Ol' Mike would even say Joe's spirit was rallied by the cathartic edge inherent in some songs and by the enthusiastic love from the crowd. Give a close listen as he sings "Live Forever" ... Joe's voice occasionally catching, or trailing off as he turns his head away from the mic (and crowd). Well, imagined or not, that gave Ol' Mike the chills - that's his story and he's sticking to it. Sound is great, especially through headphones. Of course, thanks go to Joe (and Joel) for all those golden nights of music and memories for us. Also kudos to Dallas live music icon Poor David for bringing in all the quality artists for lo these many decades, including Joe every year since 1984, in an intimate venue. Continued thanks to The Coin for the now-retired surrogate mics and to D. Ortiz (working forwardly to see his way off the DL) for the current loaners.
