Comments:
Sound quality is excellent, particularly considering the relative scarcity of recordings from their first year or so. Setlist is quite long as well - about 100 minutes - and features a good mix of Uncle Tupelo, A.M., unreleased (at the time) material, and cover songs. Highly recommended if you like this era.

Many thanks to the original taper and seeder; sorry I can't give proper credit here. Also many thanks to Owl & Bear for the great service they provide. Mp3 samples are included in the comments.

I don't think this recording has ever been circulated. From what I remember, this was the first time I talked my taper buddy Bryan into seeing Wilco, and he was hoping to get a board feed. So we went early, and I primed Bryan with information like the engineer is Stan Doty and the name of a guy I traded with who used to get board tapes from Stan. He gave Bryan the patch, but asked us to keep the recording on the down-low so he wouldn't be hassled by other folks in the future. I figure ten years is long enough to sit on this. I'm pretty certain I never traded this out, and Bryan never did a lot of trading, so this is probably its first circulation.

Bryan made me CDs of his DAT, inserting track markers on the fly, and also putting a short overlap at the start of disc 2. Discs were extracted with EAC; Poor Places> The Lonely 1 and Red-Eyed And Blue> I Got You/Hoodoo Voodoo separated, and the disc overlap eliminated, with CDWave.

This is NOT the circulating DVD, even if I added the "volume 9" green cover to the package. This comes from a master VHS received from JEMS, in terrific quality. Audio is amazing, and is in 48kHz/16 bit dithered pristine quality. The video includes the infamous "deli tray" sequence, IMHO it is really REALLY worth having...

08) We've Been Had
09) Let's Hear It For Rock N Roll
10) Outta Mind Outta Sight
11) Listen To Her Heart

Notes: First live Wilco show! Yes, this is a SBD, but don't expect a whole lot in the way of fidelity. The mix is bad and there's a ton of amp buzz. All the same, how much fuss can be made when it's an actual recording of the first Wilco gig ever!

Here is Wilco's very first live concert - at Cicero's, the site of many Uncle Tupelo gigs, just a little more than six months after that band's demise. The setlist is a mix of songs from the eventually-to-be-released A.M., UT songs, and covers.

I got this from the invaluable Owl and Bear archive. As the person who originally converted this show from a traded tape (bless him/her) notes below, even though this is a SBD recording, it's sonically mediocre, with a skewed mix and some audible hum. But it's certainly listenable and given its historical value, I figured more than a few people would be interested.

WARNING: in italian radio customes the DJ speaks a lot in-between songs. And I mean a lot.. Her purpose is to introduce songs and translate what the artists say. It may gets VERY annoying, and trust me it does, thus we might consider this recording ONLY FOR COMPLETISTS. But the songs, the actual music, are (usually) not spoken over in the middle of them.

Comments:
Another good early Wilco performance, and an excellent soundboard capture with good dynamics and a solid mix. This nearly two-hour show hits all the high points of this era of the band, with folk covers ("Sugar Baby" and "James Alley Blues"), goofy rock covers (Buzzcocks and Led Zeppelin), a heavy dose of their first two albums, and a handful of Uncle Tupelo.

Comments:
Originally brought to Dime by "tidwell" in October 2009, this is the last soundboard I'm aware of that Wilco allowed an audience member to patch out of the monitor. There are many recordings being offered for sale by the band through the "Roadcase" series on their web site, and of course Wilco remains one of the most taper-friendly of the big-name bands on tour today, but this marks the end of them making boards freely available to anyone who asked.

This was a good tour for Wilco fans. Though "Wilco (The Album)" was kind of a slow burn for me (the way most Wilco albums were), I've come to really appreciate a lot of the material on there; songs like "Bull Black Nova" and "Sonny Feeling" translate well to a live setting. The setlist features a good mix of their early material with their previous two discs. If you haven't heard a live Wilco recording and are curious because of their critical accolades, this is as good a place as any to start. Jeff is his typical funny, self-deprecating self while bantering between songs.

Track listing (71:01):

Note:
This was originally posted to the now-defunct Wilco torrent site "Via Chicago" in early 2005; I think it has run once on DIME in 2008, but I'm thinking that this may not be widely available. This is a raw soundboard recording with a few flaws; the mix isn't perfect (vocals are a little too prominent to my ears, and the guitars are a little light in the mix) and the levels are a touch low in the midsection of the show, but overall a very listenable recording from a nice era in their touring career. This features a nice Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers cover in the final encore.

Short but sweet; I thought there might be Wilco completists out there who might enjoy having this one.

Comments from the original info file:
"There are a couple of minor problems - the end of track 12 is cut and it's a choppy transition between tracks 12 and 13, but the show seems pretty rare so I thought I'd put it out there."

Comments:
WXRT has an annual tradition of simulcasting the three headlining bands at the Taste of Chicago festival every year in Chicago; Wilco held down one of the support slots in 1996 as they prepared to support "Being There." Sound quality is prety good - in line with the typical quality of their live simulcasts - and the setlist is quite interesting considering that the album was not yet released (I believe it came out in October 1996).

For those who don't yet have it, it's worth the download for the surprising arrangement of "Casino Queen." If you didn't know better, you would think it was a Bob Dylan outtake.

Comments: Good early Wilco performance, and a very nice-sounding board capture of a relatively long show from early in their career. As one would expect, this features a heavy dose of "A.M.," along with a fair amount of Uncle Tupelo, covers, obscurities and unreleased material. Given they had very little original material to draw from, this is a nice show.

I couldn't find the FLAC files that I had originally downloaded for this and went to the great Owl & Bear website to get the FLACs. Given the lack of lineage, I ran an FA and SA to ensure the files weren't lossy - they don't appear to be (see comments). This must be pretty low generation and may even be a digital transfer - this actually sounds better to me than the file set I downloaded many years ago (which was sourced from a cassette).

Notes by the uploader
I recorded this straight off the radio using a Sony-STR-Dh820 mutichannel a/v receiver, which was plugged into my laptop. I think i possibly had the volume levels a bit too high for my tastes during the recording Not loud enough to cause distortion or ruin the recording, but loud enough where you might not have to turn the volume up too high to hear it in your car or on your headphones. I'll let you be the judge. Otherwise, I think It sounds Great! I made the recording itself using audacity 2.0, split the tracks using wave splitter ver. 2.10, and finally used traders little helper to create the flacs. Enjoy!
