Another Box talk post ;)

Er zijn weer dozen gemaakt in de afgelopen weken. Heel fijn vooral als ik nog geen goed omlijnd plan heb voor een nieuwe quilt. Door de spelen met de verschillende stofdesigns ontstaat er vast wel een nieuw idee... En ondertussen maak ik een paar bestellingen af.

I have been a bit quite with blogging but busy with cardboard in the past few weeks. Especially when I have no worked out plan for a quilt, I love to play with fabric in another way. Slowly a new quilt plan will come up... At the same time I am working on some orders for boxes!

Fun with African Wax Print 'Nsu Bra'

Een van mijn lievelings-designs van de Afrikaanse prints is de 'Nsu Bra' print. Dit betekent in de Ghanese Twi taal waterput omdat het lijkt op de kringen die in het water ontstaan na het gooien van een steentje. In Nigeria heet de stof Plague-Plague omdat het ronde ontwerp volgens hun lijkt op de vinyl langspeelplaten. Het design staat prachtig op de sieradendoos met lade!

One of my favourite designs of the African fabrics is the 'Nsu Bra' print. This is from the Ghanaian Twi language and means water well. In Nigeria it's  called Plague-Plague because the circulair designs reminds people of the vinyl records. This design works great on the two-tier jewellery box!

Gecko Boxes workshops in Ghana

Dankzij de geweldige Afrikaanse stoffen die je hier in Ghana kunt kopen

zijn de workshops cartonnage een groot succes.

De afgelopen weken heb ik bijna elke week 2 a 3 workshops gegeven

en vandaag was het de laatste van het seizoen.

Custom order for a sewing box

Tussen all bezoekjes aan familie en vrienden door neem ik ook even de tijd voor mezelf

en kan ik aan een bestelling werken die snel bezorgd kan worden binnen Nederland

Vanuit Ghana is dat gewoon een kostbare aangelegenheid

In between visits to family and friends I found some time to make an order for a sewing box

It is easier and so much cheaper to send it by mail from Holland than from Ghana....

De stofjes voor deze doos kreeg ik opgestuurd en ik mocht zelf bepalen hoe ik ze wilde gebruiken

Niets is leuker dan te mogen spelen met andermans stofjes! ;)

The colourful fabrics came by mail and I got a free hand in using these

Nothing is more fun than playing with other people's fabrics! ;)

In de uitklapbare deksel zit een A5 snijmatje, lapje vilt om stofjes op te 'plakken' en schuurpapier om te voorkomen dat de stof gaat rekken als je er met een potlood lijntjes op tekent

The foldable lid holds a A5 cutting mat, a piece of batting to keep small pieces of fabric in place like a design wall and sandpaper to make it easier to mark lines on fabric without stretching it

Een magneetsluiting verwerkt in het hengsel houdt de naaidoos goed gesloten

The sewing box closes firmly with a magnet hiding in the handle

measurement is 21.5 x 16.5 x 5 cm

Quilt made out of baby and toddler clothes

De quilt is af en geleverd! 

The quilt is finished and delivered! 

 In mijn vorige blogpost liet ik je al de 9 gequilte delen van dit project zien

Er zitten allerlei stoffen in deze quilt verwerkt en de rekbare heb ik eerst met vlieseline H200 versterkt. 3 Rijen van 3 blokken heb ik met de machine aan elkaar gestikt. Daarna de 3 rijen onder elkaar gezet. Door het gewicht van de quilt een heel werk waarbij de eettafel handig van pas kwam.

In my last blog-post I showed you the 9 different sets of quilted blocks

There are many different fabrics used in this quilt and the stretchy ones I enforced with H200 vlieseline before using it. I made 3 rows of 3 blocks and these rows I sew together to make the quilt. Because of the weight of the quilt, the dining table came in handy!

Om de quilt toch een beetje soepel te laten blijven, raadde Nicolette van Dutch Comfort mij aan om eerst de bovenlaag aan elkaar te stikken en daarna de achterkant met de hand te sluiten. Voor dit klusje kwam de strijkplank goed van pas

To keep the quilt supple my friend from  Dutch Comfort advised me to first stitch the top layer together and to stitch the backing separately by hand . For this last one the ironing board came in handy

Naast het quilten met de machine heb ik ook de knoopjes van de gebruikte kinderkleding gebruikt als middel om de 3 lagen met elkaar te verbinden 

Besides quilting by machine I used the buttons from the clothes to 'quilt' some knitted parts of the quilt

 De gestreepte stof van de achterkant heb ik ook voor de bies gebruikt en daarbij het streepje dwars laten lopen. Een overgebleven kraagje is op de achterkant gegaan om mijn 'handtekening' mooi te maken

I used the same fabric from the back for the binding and

a pretty collar to embellish my 'signature' on the back

Op deze manier genieten ze weer elke dag van de dierbare herinneringen die er aan deze stofjes kleven; zoals de lakentjes waar hun overleden dochtertje onder heeft geslapen, het jurkje dat ze droeg, het balletpakje waar hun volwassen dochter allang is uitgegroeid, de stoere Ajax broek van hun zoon en het t-shirtje uit de tijd dat ze in Brazilië woonden en nog veel meer. 

Bij elk kleding stuk heb ik geprobeerd dat deel te gebruiken dat het meeste tot mijn verbeelding sprak en daardoor het was een hele leuke opdracht om te mogen maken

 With this quilt they will enjoy all the cherished memories that come with these clothes of their 4 children; like the bedsheets from their baby-daughter who died too soon, the dress she wore, the cute ballet outfit from their now teenage daughter, the Ajax soccer short from their son, a t-shirt from the time they lived in Brazil, all outgrown by now

I tried to capture those memories in using that specific part of every item in this quilt and by doing so, creating this quilt became very special to me.

 

PS: ondertussen ben ik veilig in Ghana aangekomen en heb ik al veel mooie indrukken om met je te delen! 

PS: in the meantime I arrived safe and sound in Ghana and have many impressions already to share with you!

Deadline Baby Love Quilt!

Over 5 dagen vertrek ik naar Ghana

en deze Baby Love Quilt moet af voor dat ik op het vliegtuig stap

dus ik laat nu even snel wat foto's zien en ga gauw weer verder met naald en draad

My departure to Ghana is in 5 days from today

and I want/have to finish this Baby Love Quilt for my friend before I fly
so I post these pictures quickly and go back to sewing, sewing, sewing...

A Very Special Baby Quilt

Mijn huiskamer ligt vol met 81 blokken (10.5'')

geknipt uit een lading baby- en peuterkleding

het is maar goed dat er hier verder niemand rondloopt!

The floor in my living room is covered with 81 blocks (10.5'')
made out of a stack of baby and toddler clothes
I am glad there is no one else walking around here!

Een vriendin vroeg of ik een soort herinneringsquilt wilde maken
met de kleertjes en lakentjes van haar 4 kinderen die nu tieners zijn,
behalve eentje, die helaas overleed toen ze pas 1½ jaar oud was
De kleertjes van dit kindje gingen op een speciale stapel

One of my friends asked me if I could make her a quilt made out of the clothes from her 4 kids who are teenagers by now, except for one, who died when she was only 1½ years old
 The clothes and sleeping bag of this baby girl I put on a separate pile

Het is een hele uitdaging en af en toe niet makkelijk om de schaar in de kleertjes te zetten
maar ze wist mij ervan te overtuigen dat ze dit echt wilde:
een quilt van de kleertjes van haar 4 kinderen voor op haar bed
waar zij straks samen met haar man heerlijk onder kan wegkruipen

It is a challenge and not always easy to cut out pieces from the pretty clothes
but she insisted on going ahead, because she was sure about what she wanted:
a quilt made out of her children's clothes for her bed
to cuddle underneath with her husband

Een op maat gemaakte doos

Of ik een doos kon maken voor een antieke map met oude lichtdrukken van Anton Mauve

een doos waarin deze speciale map goed beschermd zou zijn

If I could make a box to protect an antique folder with collotype prints of Anton Mauve

a box where this special folder would be safe and protected

De uitdaging was om een doos te maken waarbij de map zonder al te veel moeite 

erin en uit zou kunnen worden gehaald

en waarbij de doos zelf niet teveel spanning ondervindt door op elkaar hangende structuren

The challenge was to make a box in which the folder could be handled

without any force 

and where the different parts of the box would not lean onto each other

De bodem heeft aan weerszijden inkepingen om de map zonder veel moeite eruit te halen

The bottom part has notches on both sides so that the folder can be taken out easy

De deksel rust op de uit-stekende bodemplaat

The lid rests on the bottom part of the box which sticks out

Ik ben blij met het resultaat, het is een mooie stevige doos geworden 

met een strakke vorm en waarin de map veilig opgeborgen kan worden

I am happy with the result; it is a strong box with a sleek shape

and will keep its content safe
