'Bird Dance' found a new home

One of my favourite Bird quilts has flown out of the nest.

I was finally ready to let it go...

Because I knew the new nest would be welcoming it with love, I was able to send it across the ocean.

'Bird Dance' is a 1 meter square quilt mounted on a canvas frame.

It is one in a series of African Kaleidoscopic quilts I made when living in Ghana for 3 years. While making these kind of quilts I tried by bringing together odd colours and African prints in a certain way the kaleidoscope, or mandala, would come out better every time I made a new one.

All fabrics used are genuine African textiles from the GTP factory in Ghana and Vlisco in The Netherlands. 

Especially the red bird print is one of my favourite African prints. 

It comes in many different colours and has many different meanings.

Swallows are a symbol of good luck. However the print also symbolises asking for a favour, such as the hand of a young woman. In Benin the print signifies asking for permission to have an audience with the king, while in Togo the print is called 'Air Afrique' because the fabric was used in the uniform of the local airline company.

In Ghana the pattern refers to the transience of riches: rich today, poor tomorrow, for money has wings and can fly away. (*source Vlisco Fabrics*)

Don't worry, I don't feel like I have an empty nest now!

An African kaleidoscope for Christmas

De winkel in Accra, waar mijn doosjes te koop worden aangeboden, vroeg of ik weer een quiltje op een frame kon maken. Zo vlak voor de kerst is dat een mooie aanvulling voor bij de lokale producten.

The local shop in Accra, where some of my boxes are for sale, asked if I could make a small quilt with African fabrics. With Christmas around the corner they would love to have one as a decoration together with the local art they sell.

Ik bewaar alle ontwerpen die ik tot nu toe heb gemaakt, dus kon ik meteen aan de slag.

I keep all my designs of the past kaleidoscope quilts, so I could get started right away. 

In this short movie you can see how this little 'flower' starts to grow.

Hoewel ik de quilt op een frame zal spannen, doe ik toch een lapje stof aan de achterkant van de quilt. Zo glijdt de quilt tijdens het quilten makkelijk over de transporter van de machine.

Although I will mount the quilt on a frame, I use a piece of simple fabric as the backing. During quilting the quilt won't get stuck in the transporter of the sewing machine.

Het is mij gelukt om het binnen een week af te hebben. Het is 60 cm in het vierkant groot.

I was able to finish this quilt within one week. It measures 60cm / 23.5" square

Shapes, colours and quilts

Als het elke dag warm en vochtig is en er buiten geen wandel- en fietspaden zijn, dan is spelen met vormen en kleuren binnenshuis een heerlijk alternatief. En als je dan eenmaal bezig bent, kom je 's avonds tot de ontdekking dat je het helemaal niet gemist hebt om even naar buiten te gaan...! 

When the days are hot and humid, when there are no sidewalks or bike paths to go to, playing with shapes and colours indoors is the best thing to do! By the end of a playful day you suddenly realise you didn't miss being outside at all...!

Bij deze quilts is het patroon opnieuw aangepast om nog meer het effect van een caleidoscoop te benadrukken. Dat is te zien in elke punt van de middelste ster.

Beide quilts zijn te koop bij Wild Gecko in Accra, Ghana.

These two quilts show the latest change in my designs to enforce the kaleidoscope effect, visible in the points of the centre star.

African Kaleidoscope No 3

Weer eentje klaar! 

Een caleidoscoop met Afrikaanse prints en batiks gespannen op een canvas frame.

In het midden de kleuren van de Ghanese vlag met een zwarte ster erop geappliqueerd en stof er in verwerkt van het bedrijf waar het voor gemaakt is.

I finished another kaleidoscope!

Made with African prints and batiks and mounted on stretched canvas.

In the centre are the colours of the Ghanaian flag with appliqued stars. 

I incorporated fabric of the company I made this quilt for.

Het patroon van de border loopt door naar de zijkant

Bij het spannen van de quilt op het canvasframe, vouw ik de stof aan de achterkant strak in verstek...

When I mount it on a stretched canvas I mitre the corners on the back of the frame...

... en maak ik het vast met een nietpistool

... and fix it with a staple gun

Voordat het deur uitgaat stempel ik nog wel even mijn logo op de achterkant.

Before this piece leaves the house I mark it with my logo on the back.

En een handtekening op het doek. Zo komt deze rare uitsparing in het canvas mooi van pas!

And a signature on the back of the quilt. This funny opening in the frame comes in handy!

African Kaleidoscope no 1 60x60cm on canvas

Tadaah! Eindelijk is dit quiltje van 60 x 60 cm klaar!

De stofjes vond ik bij de stand African Fabrics op de Quilt show in Birmingham. 

Ze zijn allemaal uit Ghana afkomstig.

Tadaah! I finally finished this small quilt of 60 x 60 cm (24"x 24")

 I spotted the fabrics while I was at the latest Quilt Show in Birmingham at the stand of African Fabrics. They are all made in Ghana.

Quilting with Aurifil 12WT

Ze gingen mee in de koffer toen ik voor het eerst naar Ghana vloog en het grootste deel is met de hand in elkaar gezet omdat onze spullen nog niet gearriveerd waren vanuit Chili. Tijdens mijn verblijf in Nederland in januari ben ik het gaan quilten.

They came along with me when I moved to Ghana. Because we had to wait for the movers to bring our boxes with the stuff we shipped from Chile, I started sewing the Slow Way and brought it with me to Holland in January to quilt.

Omdat ik dit quiltje op een canvas op frame wilde spannen, heb ik aan alle 4 zijden een extra strip genaaid met dezelfde lengte als het quiltje en breed genoeg om rond het frame te spannen.

De korte kanten heb ik op bij alle 4 hoeken op elkaar genaaid zodat er al een mooie strakke hoek ontstond.

Because I wanted to mount it on a stretched canvas I added to all 4 sides an extra strip as long as the center part and wide enough to go around the sides towards the back of the frame. 

. By sewing the short ends together the stretched canvas fitted nicely inside

Ik ben er bijzonder blij mee en ben van plan een serie te gaan maken!

I am extremely happy with the outcome and I plan to make more!
