When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna, the Black Crowes, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures the entire Furthur Festival from Cincinnati on July 16, 1997, 28 years ago today. The performances include two jams that were highlights of each stop on the tour, featuring the the various members of each band sitting in with one another, adding to the festival feeling!

In May 1997, James Taylor released Hourglass, his first studio album in 6 years. An introspective disc, Hourglass focused largely on Taylor's troubled past and family. For example, Enough To Be On Your Way was inspired by the alcoholism-related death of his brother Alex earlier in the decade. The dark tone of the disc was also inspired by Taylor's divorce from actress Kathryn Walker just a year earlier. The album earned Taylor his best critical reviews in some 20 years. In addition, Hourglass was commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200, Taylor's first top 10 album in sixteen years. In addition, the album won 2 Grammy awards, for best pop album and best engineered album.  This FM broadcast captures Taylor on tour in the wake of the succes of Hourglass, in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 15, 1999, 26 years ago today.

He was a a member of the inaugural class voted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986,  alongside such legends as Elvis Presley, Check Berry, Buddy Holly, James brown, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, The Verly Brothers, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.  He had 11 top 10 singles in the 1950s/60s including Ain't That A Shame (#10), I'm In Love Again (#3), Blueberry Hill (#2), I'm Walkin (#4), Blue Monday (#5), Valley Of Tears (#8), It's You I Love (#6), Whole Lotta Loving (#6), I Want to Walk You Home (#8), Be My Guest (#8) and Walking to New Orleans (#6).  He was an influence on the biggest names in rock, including Elvis, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  He is the one and only Antoine "Fats" Domino, whose melding of R&B, New Orleans sounds, boogie woogie and rock & roll made him one of the musical legends of the 20th century.  This FM broadcast, captures him late in his career, on one of his last tours outside the US, at the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland on July 14, 1993, 32 years ago today.

At one point in their career, Steely Dan, went almost two decades without touring, from 1974 to 1993, in order to focus on studio material.  Once they did return to the road, however, they seemed to want to make uo for liost time,  After tours in 1993 and 1996, Steely Dan lauched the 21st century by taking to the road in 2000, They then also toured in 2003, and then every year from 2006 to 2017. In fact, despite the death of  Walter Becker in 2017, Steely Dan, led only by Donald Fagan at this point, will be on the road again in 2018. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Steely Dan during the Heavy Rollers tour, at the North Sea Jazz Festival,  on July 15, 2007, 18 years ago today.

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. Download, enjoy and send a contribution to help "FEED THE WORLD".
