Random Reads: "Stake Out!" by Younger and Grandenetti

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Just for the screams, why don't we gnaw on this biting bit of comicbook creepiness by Jack Younger and Jerry Grandenetti? Were those two titans of terror just winging it when they concocted "Stake Out" for Atlas/Seaboard's Tales of Evil #1 (December 1974)? Or did editor Larry Lieber stick his neck out for them? Ouch!

If You Blinked You Missed : Arrgh!

In September 1974, Marvel unleashed Arrgh! upon the comicbook world. Like DC's PLOP! it was a horror/mystery mag with a humorous twist, a love-letter to the classic EC Comics in the guise of the love-child of Tales from the Crypt and Mad. Though it lasted only five issues (September 1974-June 1975), Ol' Groove has fond memories of Arrgh! Even my non-comics pals thought it was kinda cool. Violent, subversive horror in the Mighty Marvel Manner? What more could a 70s kid--or a modern-day Groove-ophile--want?

Check out this paralyzing pair of horrifying ha-has from the freaky and fab first ish!  First up it's "Fangs for the Memories" by Jack Younger (better known as Russ Jones), Mike Sekowsky, and Tom Sutton!

Sutton's "Rat!"( inked by Peter Flynn) is still a fave. So creepy and gory--and darkly humorous. A macabre masterpiece of comicbook mirth and mayhem!

Groove's Faves: "Sam Lomax, N.Y.P.D." by Younger, Sekowsky, and McWilliams

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Have ya picked up the new Atlas titles, Phoenix, Grim Ghost, and Wulf yet? Ol' Groove got his grubby paws on 'em and am looking forward to more. They're not exactly the Atlas/Seaboard style we remember from back in the Groovy Age, but they have a cool vibe and show lots of potential. The most intriguing update has to be pulling Wulf (the Barbarian, natch) into our present day world and teaming him with a cop named Sam Lomax. Yep, the same Lomax that headlined Atlas/Seaboard's short-lived Police Action mag! (I gave ya all the skinny on that mag here.) Since Lomax is back, Ol' Groove thought it was high time to share a peek at his dazzling debut from Police Action #1 (November 1974) courtesy creators Jack (Russ Jones) Younger, Mike Sekowsky, and Al McWilliams. Dig it, baby!

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
