Sometimes, Groove-ophiles, there are no words to describe the wild weirdness of the guys from Skywald. From Nightmare #14 (cover-dated August 1973) Ed Fedory and Suso give us..."The Butchered at the Earth's Core!"

Black (and White) Friday: "Hunger of the Slaughter-Sludge Beasts!" by Moench and Suso
Season's Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Here in the U.S. of A., today's the day when people shrug off their turkey-induced comas and get up in the middle of the night to battle (sometimes literally) the raging mobs in an effort to save money on Christmas gifts at overcrowded stores offering ridiculously low marked-down prices. Ol' Groove just sleeps in, but there ya go. Anywho, this phenomenon known as Black Friday allows those of us here in Groovy City an extra helping of Black and White Wednesday goodness--just on a Friday (hence our punny, parenthetical title). This year's Black (and White) Friday special is "Hunger of the Slaughter-Sludge Beasts" by Doug Moench and Jusus Suso Rego (better known as plain ol' "Suso"). This eco-terror tale was originally published in (you guessed it!) November (1973) in Psycho #16! Here's hoping those of y'all out there Black Friday shopping don't run into any psychos, yourselves!

Black and White Wednesday: "The Thing in the Black Dress" by Hewetson and Suso
Chill, Groove-ophiles! Here's a short shocker sure to make you pull the covers over your head from Skywald's Scream #2 (cover-dated October 1973)! A frightening "fairy tale" featuring a fearsome femme to be sure..."The Thing in the Black Dress" by Archaic Al Hewetson and Jesus Suso Rego (just call him Suso)!

Black and White Wednesday: "Don't Die Up There, Stanley" by Hewetson and Suso
What it is, Groove-ophiles! Today's Horror-Mood classic by Archaic Al Hewetson and Jesus Suso Rego is a freaky comic about a comic and a bunch of freaks...and boy does it live up to the mag's title! How's that for stupefying succinctness, baby? Inspired by a comic friend of Hewetson's, "Don't Die Up There, Stanley" first came to us via Skywald's Psycho #11 (cover-dated March 1973). Dig it!

Black and White Wednesday: Suso's "The Prophecy"
Spanish artist Jesus Manuel Pena Rego, aka Suso, wowed fans the world over back during the Groovy Age. Suso's work appeared in Spain, Germany, and England, but it's his U.S. work for Skywald, Warren, and Atlas/Seaboard that Ol' Groove knows best. His beautiful, sensual, moody, detailed, and realistic style, especially his mastery of black and white/light and dark/negative space, always stood out in any mag to which he contributed. One of his best pieces appeared in the second issue of Atlas/Seaboard's short-lived Vampirella rip-off, Devilina (February 1975). I think you'll dig..."The Prophecy"!
