Funny Stuff: "Something Funny Is Going On"

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! A couple weeks ago, Groove-ophile Kevin L. asked about Rich Rich Vault of Mystery. Well, Kevin, RRVoM ran for five issues (August 1974-April 1975) before it changed its name to Richie Rich Vaults of Mystery and ran thru issue 47 (June 1982). Just so happens that Ol' Groove has scans of RRVoM #1 lying around (funny how that happens, huh?), so why don't we take a look at the lead story, "Something Funny Is Going On"?

Funny Stuff: "The Close Shaves of Pauline Peril" by Connell and Manning

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Here's a short-lived but oh-so-hip and cool comic from Gold Key: The Close Shaves of Pauline Peril #1 (March 1970). Written and created by Disney/Gold Key great Del Connell (creator of Super Goof and Space Family Robinson/Lost In Space, to boot!) and illustrated by Hanna-Barbera/Dell/Gold Key stalwart (and quite an artistic innovator as you'll see in the following pages) Jack Manning, Pauline Peril was another in the line of Paulines (and Penelopes and Loises and...you get the idea) who get into--well--perilous situations that make for fun comicbook reading. This Pauline is a mod, with-it reporter for the Daily Noose (which just happens to be owned by her uncle) whose editor wants her dead (because he'll just happen to gain ownership of the Noose with Pauline out of the way) and who goes on exciting adventures to bring us the news. The mag lasted only four issues, but it deserved to run much longer. Whaddya think?

Funny Stuff: "The Monstrous Mosquito" by Warren Kremer

You like Funny Stuff, Groove-ophiles! You really like it! So today we're gonna check out Ol' Groove's favorite Harvey Comics character, Stumbo the Friendly Giant! Yeah, I like Richie Rich, Hot Stuff, Spooky, and the rest, but the big-hearted (naturally!) giant is my personal favorite Harvey denizen. I'd love, love, love a tpb collection of his adventures. This particular tale, "The Monstrous Mosquito" from Devil Kids #37 (October 1968)was drawn by creator Warren Kremer and is just a fun little five pager that gives you a good idea of what Stumbo was all about. Let's truck on down to Tiny Town!

Groove's Faves: "Smog-Gone It!" by Warren Kremer

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! There has been some interest shown 'round Groove City toward Harvey Comics and their kid-friendly komiks, which got Ol' Groove ta thunkin'...why not run some more Harvey stuff ? (And yeah, more Sad Sack is on the way--just not today...) I always dug Richie Rich, Spooky, and Hot Stuff, but my honest-to-gosh fave Harvey character was Stumbo the Giant. Created by Warren Kremer back in 1957 (debuting in Hot Stuff #2), Stumbo was a friendly giant who kept all of his stuff in a dormant volcano and lived next to a place called Tiny Town. Stumbo wasn't very bright (and he snored a lot), but he had a good heart and always tried to make amends when he goofed up--which was often. Here's a short five-pager  starring Stumbo from Hot Stuff #84 (March 1968) with art (according to Grand Comics Database) by creator Kremer. Yers trooley hopes ya dig, "Smog-Gone It!"

And what the hey--here's the Stumbo one-pager from that self-same ish! Who loves ya, baby?

Random Reads: "The Abominable Snow Plan" and "A Snow Thing" by Uncredited

Season's Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Today as we sit back and look over our newly-accumulated Christmas swag, let's look back at the kid who got all the swag every day, Richie Rich. L'il Groove (and a whole lot of other neighborhood kids and kin) loved Richie's travels and adventures--kinda like a rich l'il kid Indiana Jones or something. This two-parter, "The Abominable Snow Plan" and "A Snow Thing", was originally published in Riche Rich Millions #58 (December 1972). Grab a plate of milk and cookies and dig in!

Speaking of swag, here are the comicbook related goodies Ol' Groove got for being good this year:

Hope your Christmas was merry!
