Black and White Wednesday: "The Boob Rube Story" by Schwartzberg and Severin and "The Moe Jamouth Story" by Wolfman, Severin, and Trimpe

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! It's that magical time of the year when baseball is winding down and football is gearing up--fall! What a coincidence, then, that Ol' Groove has dug into the Files of the Forgotten to find this two-part ha-ha-fest from Crazy #4 (March1974) featuring the all-time most famous Boy of Summer, Babe Ruth and the original quarterback celebrity, himself, "Broadway" Joe Namath. The point of this two-part biopic parody is to show how the movies used to treat their subjects with near-reverence compared to the dig-up-all the dirt approach that went on during the Seventies (and still goes on today, natch!). Whether you accept Stu Schwartzberg and Marv Wolfman's premise, appreciate their humor, or don't--ya have to love the Marie Severin (backed by Herb Trimpe on the "Moe Jaymouth Story") art!

Superbowl Sunday Special! Sports Celeb Comic Book Ads

What it is, sports fans! Seems that everyone digs Superbowl Sunday, dunnit? Even non-football fans get in on the act if for no other reason to dig on the ca-raazee commercials that are sprung on us during the Big Game. That got Ol' Groove to thinking about how during the Groovy Age, some of our fave sports stars (some of whom are still famous, others, sadly, now infamous) would actually star in comicbook ads (often as comicbook characters!) to sell us on body building, batting practice, basketballs, and even boots. Ol' Groove always thought those ads were kinda far out, so I thought I'd share a few of 'em with ya today. You know, to give you something to do between naps, parties, time-outs, and possible wardrobe malfunctions. Enjoy!

The Boys from Derby: Super Bowl Special! 1969 Super Bowl in Comics Form by Tony Tallarico

It's Super Bowl Sunday, Groove-ophiles! Bet you're wonderin', "What's that got to do with comicbooks?" Well, back in the winter of 1969/1970, Charlton Comics produced the first (and only) issue of Charlton Sports Library-Professional Football. While most of it's 68 pages (written and drawn by Charlton mainstay Tony Tallarico) was pretty much a pen-and-ink version of your garden variety sports almanac (pic of a player, stats, team logo--the usual stuff), what really made this comic unique (as if it needed anything else to do that!) was it's recap of the 1969 Superbowl in comicbook form! It's the Colts vs. the Jets! Namath vs. Unitas! It's Superbowl III! So before you start scarfing down the buffalo wings and nachos, check out this rare piece of comicbook--and Superbowl--history!

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
